Q:

OK mike and you other experts…

You guys didn’t help much when I asked about getting a scope for the Woodsman….yeah I could of bought a Zeiss… but they don’t match the gun and the current scope does so well that the replacement has to be PERFECT!

Here’s the new challenge:

I’ve just been informed that the build for my Barnes Yukon is “on.” This gun will look pretty much like the Yukon GS on the Barnes site but will actually be a .62 (rifled) making over 700 FPE peak and will likely be tuned to make two consistent high 600’s shots.

I’m getting all hot and bothered just thinking about it! 😆

Here’s the deal: I’ve shot a similar powered Barnes .62 (not to be confused with my .62 smoothbore) and the gun is deadly freaking accurate. Really, we didn’t even bother setting up targets at less than 100 yards the last time out. I’ve got no doubt that mine will be just as accurate. Especially since I was there when the barrel got rifled with the same button as the first and I got to watch it getting reamed and polished.

This gun is going to get used for hunting but 99% of the time it’s going to be shooting at targets paper or reactive at 100-250 yards. I will of course do some backyard shooting at 43 yards just to keep the neighbors on edge but mostly, this is going to be a long range gun. I hate to miss the target and I hate to get anything worse than a cloverleaf group. I can’t have crap glass on this gun.

Fortunately, the gun is paid for and I’ll be getting a little extra pay for last year’s effort in a few days. So, I’m looking for good glass.

I’ve looked at a bunch of high end scopes but I’m not decided yet and I want to be sure I’ve looked at everything I should consider.

So far, I’ve researched US Optics, S&B, Kahles, Swarovski, Leopold, IOC Z…, Zeiss, Nightforce and some others. I’m seriously considering the Nightforce scope. I spent a lot of time looking at the US Optics scopes but in the end, they don’t fit my needs. The Nightforce scopes seem to have a great rep. The Zeiss scopes also have a great rep and on top of that, I can get one in a stainless finish that will look great on the gun.

The Hendsholt and S&B are great scopes but just a bit too far out of reach. 😯 Once you get to the 5-25 range or there abouts, they are just hugely expensive and that tells me to step back a class!

So, is the Nightforce 5.5-22 x 56 NXS the scope to get?

You didn’t say what model. Light? Yep. Tracks well? Uh, what does track well mean. Are you referring to shooting the box? It has click adjustments?
Excellent glass. I’ve owned a LOT of Lupy’. Some better than others. Excelent glass? I have never been that lucky. Good yes. Excelent no. Wish they were.

High prices, medium quality. Japanese Glass. Lupy Hallmarks all.

I have a Leupold on my Condor and I can tell you that it is feather -light

Its not a top of the line scope but it does the job I want it too. and the glass is excellent, and it tracks well .

It aint a NF, but its a no -bullshit scope. I really like it.

Or maybe, just maybe, you are a bit biased. 😉

But it is good. 😀

Jerry, I agree with every thing you have said here. Looks like you have really done your home work. So here’s a A+ 😀 😉

Now about the character that posted that the Zeiss Conquest lens are made by Meopta in Japan. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to Author anything. 😆

Meopta came from the ashes of East Germany. They and IOR rely heavily on the old East German Carl Zeiss AUS JENNA tech. Meopta’s top glass, the Meostar, is German. Not Japanese. As is IOR. Zeiss takes care of come of the coatings for both companies. Scholt is the Glass maker of choice for IOR. I haven’t run down Meopta yet. Or their closest competitor, Doctor Optic. But they are owned, Euro-built, Euro-Glass.
I’m surprised that some self proclaimed expert source hasn’t claimed China is in on it as well.

All Zeiss Glass is Scholt as is S&B. It is in the coatings that Zeiss is ahead right now. It goes back and forth like a tennis match. 😉

The exception to this is Swaro. They make their own. And Damed Good it is too!

For your needs, I don’t see how NF can be beat, (Unless you want to go for the price of a Hensolt 😉)

The only thing I would take exception with here is the second tier for Zeiss Conquest. It is indeed second Tier when compaired to the 1st Tier European Optics, but when compaired to any of the Japanese Glass, Yes, even the very top, Bushy 6500, or Lupy VX-7, (Yes, the Lupy is Japanese Glass) it is deffinately a cut above. Maybe I rank the best Japanese Glass as 3rd Tier! 😉

Mike

Thanks Jerry 😀

I’m looking for a scope too. Haven’t decided which yet 😕

Pictures? I have to take pictures? That sounds like soooo much bother. 😀

Picudo,

The Nightforce scopes are available from a bunch of online stores, just google it and you’ll see. I’ve not decided which site gets the business but Optics Planet has been good to me before… I’ve looked around and so far the price is the same no matter where I find the scope! Well, there are a couple places that want more but most of the sites are the same.

Where are you buying the NF? Do you have a link?

There better be pictures after all this…. 😆

Knife (and interested parties),

I’ve spent an assload of time reading scope reviews and comparing features etc.!!! I found one post where the author claims the Conquest glass is made in Japan by Meopta! (I toss that in to see if you’re paying attention, but I really did read that).

What is clear is that the Zeiss glass is the best or or so close that you can’t really distinguish the top 3 or 4 (which may all come from the same place, it’s hard to tell). One guy confirmed that he had spoken to a Zeiss engineer who confirmed that the glass in the top line Zeiss was the same as the Hensoldt but the tactical scope had better turrets and features for military use. Lot’s of folks claimed that the top Zeiss was better than S&B or vice versa or the same…nothing to push a consensus. The Heritage from Premier is said to have glass just below the Zeiss/S&B but it might be the same stuff! It is definitely German glass and good stuff. The IOR (Valdada) scopes have great glass too, it’s made by Schott and might also be the same as the Zeiss/S&B stuff but who knows exactly how the grade and sell the stuff? Lot’s of great reviews on the IOR optical performance but also a bunch of horrible reviews on one particular model and a ton of comments on the customer service being a crap shoot if you do have a problem.

There are a few scope lines that are clearly the top of the optical pyramid. Unfortunately, the prices reflect that. The second tier of the optical scale gets a bit more muddled as far as I can tell. This is where the highest Japanese glass comes in. There are a couple Japanese companies that make excellent glass (you might have noticed all those monster lenses on the sidelines at the big game are Japanese!). The scopes in the second tier are the Conquest, Nightforce, U.S. Optics and the most expensive Leupolds. These scopes don’t cost as much on average but the custom stuff that USO does can and does drive them up fast!

The Leupolds are just also rans in this category. The problem is that they hold every feature so dear! I was looking at a very expensive 1-4x26ish scope (from the Euro line) and it was high dollar but still used coin operated turrets! Jeez! I was trying to keep an open mind towards Leupys but they charge you double just to give you a tube with no bends! The Leupys are almost inevitably over-priced for what they deliver and grossly so. On the plus side, they are known for excellent customer service and they have an awesome array of custom shop options you can buy. I swear, if they delivered modern turrets without charging for them like they were invented yesterday, I’d buy a VX-7 and customize it…

The USO scopes are outstanding. I don’t think I saw a single negative review from someone who was not an idiot or had clearly bought the wrong scope for his application. The custom work they do is pretty cool too as is where they put their emphasis, you’ll just have to read their stuff to gather an idea of the corporate mindset.

The Conquest line is regarded very highly overall and the optics are clearly a value. Unlike the Leupys where decent glass costs you a fortune and clicks are still an “extra” the Conquest scopes clearly deliver better optics than their price point indicates. The only problem with these scopes relates to the 1″ tube and the limited adjustment that entails and also the reticle choices/turret options. If I ever get some more coin, I’m going to get a Conquest for the Woodsman. I need a 1″ tube to fit the custom mount on that gun and I think a 6×20 Conquest with a Z-1000 reticle would be great for that gun (as it might be the most accurate I’ve ever shot).

That brings me to the Nightforce line: It is clearly in the second tier in optics but it has some other advantages. The biggest one is that it is built extremely rugged and the adjustments work flawlessly. Nearly everybody that comments on a better scope (optically) or worse scope (any reason) mentions that the NF scopes always track spot on over and over. The NF line has a huge following in high power long range shooting based on being very strong and having repeatable adjustments all the time. Given that I’m putting the scope on a high power airgun (no it’s not a Barrett .50 but you’d be surprised by the longer duration kick) AND that I’ll be doing a lot of knob dicking as the range changes from short (50 yards) to long (200 yards), repeatable adjustment and the zero stop feature become very important. Also, it doesn’t matter if the adjustments work well if they don’t have the required range. The NF scope has nearly double the elevation range as the Conquest and on top of that, it has a reticle much better suited to how I shoot most of the time. I should be able to dial to center far more often with the NF scope and when I do have to hold over, the reticle will be more to my liking (allthough I do like the Z-1000).

So, I’ve decided to get a NF 5-22×56 NXS with the NP-R1 reticle and standard 1/4 MOA turrets. I thought about a mil based reticle and mil turrets to match but the finer adjustment of the 1/4 MOA turret better matches the lower range and tighter shooting I ‘m going to be doing (but having the turret adjustment and reticle match was a must).

If you’ve been reading along all this way and have not puked yet, here’s the kicker! I sent the scope side view and dimensions to my favorite custom airgunsmith (currently working on my new cannon) and the gun’s design is being modified (slightly but not insignificantly) to make this scope a perfect fit. Gary has a model of my best length of pull and eye position (from the last project) and is making sure that this scope (with a significantly different eye relief) will mount in the optimum location. This will make getting behind the scope more comfortable and is great news for me and anyone my size shopping at my estate sale! In addition to the best eye/scope position, the gun will have the appropriate “droop” compensation built into the mounting rails to match my shooting and the scope (a lot easier with the NF’s big range). I’m a little excited about this project! 😆

If the IOR’s are having a reliability problem, I don’t blame you for steering clear!

FFP Scopes are SWEET for Hunting, and make milling at any power a no brainier! 😉

I missed a Zeiss Davari Tac. Scope on Evil Bay last week, or week before. 30mm with 56mm objective for 1200. 😯

Mike

Here are a couple to look at that might be something Jerry would find interesting…

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=989176

Now this next link is really cool… Horus has some nice scopes and even better recticles… Click this hyper link and then at the bottom of the page push and play the recticle demo they have… Its pretty slick

http://www.horusvision.com/falcon.php

Next up is one that is plain nasty guys… Its a March that is 5-32X52 and has the 10yards to infinity focus… I have no idea what these cost or where to get one… I was afraid to do a google search to find out also…

http://www.deon.co.jp/march/5X-32X52_tactical.html

This should give some drooling over some of this anyway…

Rowdy,

I don’t think I’ll be bead blasting a scope in this price range! That’s something I would surely FUBAR!

I wish the conquest came with a 30mm tube and more elevation adjustment. This gun will have plenty of power to reach out to 200+ but it is still an airgun and there will be drop to compensate for at the longest ranges.

I like the zero stop feature on the NF NXS as I’ll probably end up with a 50-75 yard zero and dial up from there.

I keep reading all the reviews I can and there are a number of things that have come to my attention that I had not even considered before. I’m even thinking of getting a scope with a FFP reticle. Some other features like illumination don’t mean as much to me but the choices in reticles are pretty important. One thing that is clear from reading all the reviews is that at a given price point, the best glass is Zeiss. That said, the distinction becomes less important as the dollars pile up!

I have read a number of forum posts regarding the IOR scopes that confirm some headaches and support problems. The performance is good but I don’t see any reason to sign on for a potential quality issue and repair problem when there are so many other solid choices out there.
