.22 slug preview
The Barnes .22 slugs by Surefire Casting project is coming along. Gary has cut the mold and sent me some pictures and weights tonight. There are a number of things to be worked out before the mold gets to us to begin production but I thought you might enjoy a preview.
The small slugs are about 9mm/.354″ long and should fit into magazine fed guns, about 31gr. The largest slug is pretty close to a scaled down 9 ring and comes in at 54gr. The middle slug is 46.5gr.
Gary is still working on custom handles and sizing dies for this mold. He has reported that making these is a PITA and he’s looking at some ways to make it less so.

The first mold has proved to be a PITA so Gary has cut a second mold with the same cherry he made for the first. The cherry is OK but the geometry of the first mold was a problem. So, new blocks, new sprue plate, new top hat…etc. The new stuff casts slugs just like the first go, so I won’t be posting pictures of the latest trials as one can’t tell a difference. There WILL be a difference of course, you just can’t tell by looking. The smaller slugs will still fit in a Rapid magazine (less than .380″) and the big ones will still be huge like a .25 9 ring. Hopefully they will just be a PITA to cast and not impossible to get decent volumes of quality slugs…

That’s because I don’t know. I don’t have the slugs and when we talked Gary did not have calipers handy. I’ll put out all the specs in due time.

Once we get all the parts made and figure out a way to cast these things with some sort of consistency, I’ll put out a call to form the line!

I suspect that longer the barrel the easier it will be to get these slugs up to speed, just like with any heavy weight projectile.
One thing that needs to be said is that the medium size will probably cost more than the other two. That’s because it is a single cavity in the mold and will take twice as long to produce. The smaller the slug, the bigger the pain in making them. Making them one at a time is an even bigger pain so I’ll try to encourage the small or large slugs instead.
Yeah, that’s what I meant, will there be enough “utilized” air to get them fast enough to stabilize. I would love for them to shoot well out of my 18″ condor, but somehow I see them doing better in a 24″ barrel.
What would be the next step up in extracting more power from a condor valve and hammer combo, if need be?
They will get a full revolution from an 18, but how fast will they go…..?

Well, I might have to reconsider trying to sell my 24″ barrel. Perhaps I should hold on to it just in case it likes those 9 rings. Jerrry, do you think an 18″ barrel will be long enough to get those 9 rings spinning???
