Silent Pellet Brief Case
I’m just starting on this project, here are the raw materials. I will follow up with a post once its complete and tested.
All from Home Depot…
* 10lb Duct Seal (1lb bars) do not buy Duct Sealant! (big mistake)
* FYI: The duct seal box is the same as letter size paper targets.
* Plumbers putty for surrounding missed shots, see after pics.
* Steel plate to act as a backstop and to prevent damage to the case.
* 3M Double sided sticky tape, for attaching plate to case.
* Odd bit of steel to act as magnetic paper holder.
* Aluminum tool case.
* 2×4, not shown, will be used for framing, see after pics.
* Magnet, not shown.
* Target, not shown.

That’s cool , very portable, mines not so portable. kind of heavy, been thinking of onother very light one to move around.
rubber mulch behind the carboard in back. with 1/4” back plate at angle on end of box,
i have shot high vel 22 long rifle in it so i know the condor cant beat it up.
I’m shooting it outdoors, so debris falls into the grass. I wanted to have an alternative to shooting soda cans and silhouettes, both of which make a lot of noise compared to the silent trap.
I have a larger and more robust box in the garage for indoor shooting. It uses a 2 x 2 x 2 ft box with half of it filled with wood chips and a void between the target and the trap for debris. It has 10K rounds in it and doesn’t need cleaning because of its size. I just add a handful of wood chips and shop vac the void once a year.
only thing i can see that might be a problem is there is nothing to catch the debree that falls while you are shooting, pellets , paper etc.
maybe set the whole thing in a shallow cardboard box , ????

How much did the Aluminum tool case cost, my local Home Depot did not have them, I will try another store.

I built one out of steel kind of like a rim fire trap with the rubber mulch in back and duct seal slide in for the light stuff.
completely silent except for the pellet hitting paper sound. with all the way up to 32 grain pellets, even shot some rim fire in it, worked great.
Fancy, it looks great.
Okay, I’ve finished the trap by adding a steel bar to the bottom 2×4 and modifying some magnets from Office Max click here, buy the LARGE size. I’ve included a picture of the document wallet that contains all the targets and fits inside the closed case.
Drill out the cross bar, remove the spring loaded top,
and flatten the side hinges. You’re left with a magnet
protected by a steel face and convenient lip to lift.

Okay, its built and works perfectly. Its a little heavy but I guess that’s a good thing! There’s the sound of my pellet gun and then a faint sound of paper breaking – that’s it!
I added a 3/4″ backboard in front of the steel sheet to protect against roachcreek shooting my target with his Howitzer. 🙂
As for real world penetration (tip’s hat to Hoot)… I get 1/2″ with a 7gn Wadcutter (177) at 7 yards at ~1300psi. Point blank with a Kodiak I get 3/4″ penetration. So I’ve got at least 1″ of Duct Seal before the backboard and steel.
I need a magnet instead of masking tape… You can see the softer plumber’s putty for stray shots. The “step” steel plate was screwed into the frame and then the head was protected by 2×4 trimmed to size. Frame assembled with a 2″ nail gun and 3M double tape to the steel plate.
I’m running a TSS 12″ at 1400psi with 7gn wad cutters. This box is specifically for low power target shooting.
I have 4×6″ pressure treated wood fashioned into a 12″ high backstop with clothes pegs (for targets) stops pointed Kodiaks and 2600psi. It can also stop a 17 HMR with ease.
I will take your warning and design the box for three layers of duct seal. Time to empty out another Home Depot! 🙂

As the robot on lost in space used to repeat annoyingly.
I just put on my 24 inch barrel, and with the condor tank and 25 grain Monsters going at 1000 I put 5 shots @25 yards into .22 inches.
And right thru the back of my pellet trap!
Saw, with hat in hand, I will be at the check out stand at Home Depoe, buying enough duct seal to fill that baby and also put a thick steel plate reinforcement panel inside .
And I will tell them Saw sent me…
