Edgun "break-in" groups – post cleaning.
I posted this over at the Yellow, as well. But, I know that half you boners don’t even step foot on that page. So…
My groups started to open up a bit with my Edgun. I know that I am capable of shooting MOA, 5-shot groups at 50 yards, so I got out a few patches and ran them through (sometimes this can do the trick). It felt like I was draging the patch through a brier patch. The dry patches were not enough to get the grime out. So, I ran a few “wet” patches through with Ultrabore gun cleaning solvent. I followed with a lot of dry patches, until the gunk was 95% gone.
As expected, when I started shooting again, things were out of whack. It took 40-50 shots for the gun to get back in line… but, it DID get back in line.

Thank Ed and mamcrackin. I tried to post those pics too but since I wasn’t a member of the other forum, the pics didn’t show if you weren’t. That’s an amazing difference!

Since May of 2010 all Matadors are equipped with the new LW barrels they made for my special order. They are processed inside to be smother. It works, indeed. Unfortunately I cannot put pictures in this forum so plese someone put those two in this tread.

jag, so far I have found that cleaning the barrel, then using a bore polish
followed by a car paint fine compound works well… Many just clean the
barrel and let the pellets do the break in… If you lube the pellets (I use
BreakFree) I think it extends the amount of shots before the barrel needs to
be cleaned… If you aren’t using lube then you could find that cleaning every
1,000 shots or so might help accuracy….
I’m reviving this thread with a stupid newbie question since I’ve never been an airgunner before. I mainly shoot .223 w/ my AR’s and 300 win mags but this precision air gunning has me intrigued. I know the huge “pain in the ass” process I go through when I “break-in” a new firearm barrel. I did a search for break-in here and didn’t come up with much.
Could someone just point me in the right direction on the subject with a new Matador barrel. I want to do things right since I have now “officially” sent in my deposit for a Matador. Yaaaaaaaay! 😀

This is great information. I’m seeing some vertical stringing on my Edgun and I believe I haven’t “shot it in” yet. Your data is very conclusive. I’ll say thank you all day for an informative post like this…..much appreciated.

Usually a few dry patches – without cleaning solvent – does the trick. And I do not have to “endure” a break-in period when using only dry patches. I do this every 200 shots, or so – mostly to get the lead “shards” out of the barrel. I only use solvent if the dry patches don’t do the trick. That is usually every 500-1000 shots.
Nice one Ted. How many shots through her before you lost accuracy and had to clean?
Good job, Ted! That is just confirms that I told before, after cleaning a barrel it takes few dozens shots to get the same level of accuracy it was before the barrel became dirty. That rule works also for those who change the pellets.
Thanks Jeff, I appreciate the words. Most just stay silent – and I’m cool with that, too. But, when I see my posts and videos being regurgitated on other forums by people I’ve never heard of, it makes me wonder why they didn’t take a minute to say thanks if they found the info worthy enough to repost.

Lee, I use a piece of melted weed-whacker mono-filament (300 lb), with two Hoppe’s .270 to .35 caliber patches. I pull one through a few times, then I add the 2nd and pull that one through 5 times. I repeat as needed.
Ted, what exact size patches do you use and how many dry patches do you normally use?
