Q:

100 ft lb Hi Flo Valve

Seems like 100 ft lbs is the magic number that people keep trying for. I was curious, so after getting my gorilla installed valve off my new tank, I took apart the valve and mic’d everything. Seems straightforward. They used loctite in the valve body too, and it seems to have leaked into the O ring groove, it behaves strangely and binds a little. Will have to replace the o ring and work on that part another day. Today I’m only interested in some porting work and seeing what this valve can do.

After some thoughtful mods I reinstalled the valve; 3000psi. With 43g eun jins I get around 95 ft lbs. With some custom pellets around 85g (.258 lead powderburner pellets that I shaved down slightly on the lathe, only made a couple), I get around 105 ft lbs from this slightly modified hi flow, running around .100 of top hat, heavy hammer and heavy spring. I guess I could up the tophat a bit and try for more, but that’s enough for now.

I have to play with it a bit more and see how the consistency runs. If it’s a good batch of mods, I may offer this as a tuning service for people who want more out of their hi flow valves. My .308 only makes a little over 120 ft lbs and it has not failed to take a pig cleanly yet, so in a .25 this is pretty much all anyone would need for small and medium game.

All better now. Still have 2 opposed thumbs. Don’t have to give up my place in the evolutionary applecart to the next homonid in line. Looks like crap… but then, no part of me above the waist looked very good to begin with, so I guess that’s ok.

Update? All better now? Cut the thumb off an old glove. Try it.

If you do it like Walter said with your thumb and forefinger, you dont feel any pain at all from the drilling. Its even worth a few bucks to buy a brand new bit for the job.

Once the pressure is released, youll be glad you did it.

I second that 110%

Shit dude, I’m hurting just thinking about it! 😯

I found a little trick for getting Jerrys slugs into the breach.

I was at first useing the bolster of a pocket knife but slipped and put a nick into the bl. breach. 😆 My bad! 😳

So I grabbed a clothe pinn and spun in in half. the slug’s start fine by hand, and I can then use the flat wood to press it hone. Since I can use buth hands to push forward, and the wood is soft, no damage. And since I’m using the flat sides of the wood, it dead stright. 😀

No more sore thumb from trying to press them home. 😉

Well, I have a bad case of the PURPLE THUMB. I got a 43g eun jin about halfway into the bore and it cocked slightly sideways and stuck there… so I was struggling with it and my other hand inadvertently brushed against the trigger. You guessed it, the hammer came down (and I have a heavy spring in there) and *%&&%*#*!! my thumb. The tophat didn’t go through my thumbnail, but it was close. The area under the base of the thumbnail is all ugly purple from the blood pooling underneath. Shit. Have to put off working on the lathe a few days…

OOOhhh that sucks Walt!!!! Careful brother 😆

If I still had a missus, I’d hit meself with a hammer to get to sleep as often as possible! And when I awoke, I’d have me a drink with a little umbrella in it just before drifting off to sleep again…

You guys are a great help, thanks. I think I’d rather throw myself into an active volcano. With one of those little drinks with the slice of pineapple and a little umbrella.

walt

😆 😆 I’m with Walt on this one. For sure it would release the pressure, but then I also dont smack my head with a hammer when I want to sleep!!

Walt, the best thing to do mate is nothing. Just look dead sorry for yourself and show the missus often, hoping for sympathy. I use this method and it works quite well….

hahahahaha, I actually thought of that, but the image of me using the mill as a drill press and drilling through my thumbnail to provide a pressure relief for the blood seemed a more painful alternative than just leaving it be. I hate practicing medicine on myself. None of my patients have survived.

It obviously has not swollen up enough!
once it has reached the critical pressure that makes you want to die you will happily drill into that thumbnail.
Use a little 1/16″ drill bit, cleaned up with ispropyl and operate it with thumb and finger for a sensitive feel.
it will be orgasmic!

Always fearful of that when I’m wrestling with a pellet. Thankfully I have avoided it….so far!
Dude, that must of ruined your manicure?? 😆
