100 ft lb Hi Flo Valve
Seems like 100 ft lbs is the magic number that people keep trying for. I was curious, so after getting my gorilla installed valve off my new tank, I took apart the valve and mic’d everything. Seems straightforward. They used loctite in the valve body too, and it seems to have leaked into the O ring groove, it behaves strangely and binds a little. Will have to replace the o ring and work on that part another day. Today I’m only interested in some porting work and seeing what this valve can do.
After some thoughtful mods I reinstalled the valve; 3000psi. With 43g eun jins I get around 95 ft lbs. With some custom pellets around 85g (.258 lead powderburner pellets that I shaved down slightly on the lathe, only made a couple), I get around 105 ft lbs from this slightly modified hi flow, running around .100 of top hat, heavy hammer and heavy spring. I guess I could up the tophat a bit and try for more, but that’s enough for now.
I have to play with it a bit more and see how the consistency runs. If it’s a good batch of mods, I may offer this as a tuning service for people who want more out of their hi flow valves. My .308 only makes a little over 120 ft lbs and it has not failed to take a pig cleanly yet, so in a .25 this is pretty much all anyone would need for small and medium game.

Well, I have a bad case of the PURPLE THUMB. I got a 43g eun jin about halfway into the bore and it cocked slightly sideways and stuck there… so I was struggling with it and my other hand inadvertently brushed against the trigger. You guessed it, the hammer came down (and I have a heavy spring in there) and *%&&%*#*!! my thumb. The tophat didn’t go through my thumbnail, but it was close. The area under the base of the thumbnail is all ugly purple from the blood pooling underneath. Shit. Have to put off working on the lathe a few days…
