.22 barrel swap in .177 rws model 48 side lever
I was wondering if it would be possible to swap the barrel in a RWS model 48 air rifle.When i bought my RWS model 48 my father also bought one at the same time and in the same caliber.He is wondering if it is possible to change his barrel to .22??

Nice! The legend is supposed to be able to hold up to magnum springers.
It’s a piece of non sticky camo wrap for comfort and quietness(I lost the rubber piece lol)
Yeah he probally wrapped a piece of cloth around the cocking hand,e to dampen the sound when the cocking lever returns to the side of the gun as to not scare off prey 😉

I love my RWS 48…. or shall I say loved…I am now a PCP Guy, But I would have a hard time getting rid of “Old Bessie” I have had her for 20+ years and she has been good to me. plus after getting her tuned by John in PA and getting the stock refinished by my furniture finishing friend. She just looks to good to part with. Although I may be snatching the Legend off the top to throw on the TSS I am building 😕

Yeah you see whats funny is that there are so called deals like that but they dont include the shipping.You figure around $35 or so for shipping and that brings it around $400.
Amazon is good for people that dont know better.When i found the model 48 for $369.It was from amazon and they were getting it from air gun warehouse.If you go to air gun warehouse you will see that the gun is around $400 shipped.
I think this is how amazon makes there money since they are a distibutor also.they get it from another company and then make a profit on it.
obviously air gun warehouse is selling it for $369 but with shipping its around $400 as i checked the weight and length of the model 48 and it all packaged up cost $35 shipping from USPS.
But the gimick is $400 and free shipping…..WOW!!!!!…….NO.It is $369 plus shipping 😎
Yeah I love my 48 too! I also vorteked mine(18.1gr JSB at 730fps)! I have the hawke 2-7×32 airmax holding for 500 or so shots so far. Here she is on a hunt the other week! I stole crow’s paint job idea(krylon camo, thanks crow! where the hell he anyway?)! However I am thinking of going black bedliner like T’s new paint job. That thing is sweet! Squirrel was taken with a head shot at 30 yards or so.

My neighbor just received his new RWS 48 in caliber .22!
Using Benji 14.3gr, he’s getting 830 fps and 21.39 fpe.
Plenty good for snakes, and critters out a good ways. He’s very happy with it.

To be honest with you, It is a heck of a lot smoother and doesn’t have the twang it used to have. He also redid the trigger (T05) and it is beautiful, nice and light and crisp. I must admit though it doesn’t shoot as 1000fps more like 875-900 It has The Vortek kit in it. he also added buttons which seemed to smooth out the action.
As far as the Bushnell Legend, It hasn’t ruined it as of yet. I add a Tasco on there for 20 years and it still worked when I too it off.
I have had my M, 48 sinse 2000, buddy of mine brought a gamo over that was not bad at all, in 2000 a gamo hunter was about like a M 34 Rws in feel any way. it shot really pretty good, so any way i was off to bass pro to get a springer, i had a Sheridan that i had shot the seals out of, and a Bsa air sportster stutzen that i had shot the seals out of so i was out of a air rifle, and at the time did not know where i could get one rebuilt,
so any way i think the 48 was the rifle i was after at the time or that is the most power that they had there at the time, and i really wanted a .22, but they did not have it in stock, and i was not leaving with out a gun, so i have had my M.48 Rws since in .177 , i have read on the net about people changing the caliber, i don’t know how expensive it is, but it can be done, might b better to trade it off and get the other cal,
i have shot that gun several thousand times ,in the 10 years or so i have had it, i have shot my condor well over 10 thousand times in the one year i have had it, 😀
I really like the big Rws, i think a M 54, in 22 would really be sweet.

How did the tune change the M 48 . mine probably needs some attention.it is still sending 9.5 grain pellets in the 850″s and 7.9 grain right at 1000 to 1050 fps.but it’s not the smoothest thing.
I would say that it’s not economically possible to change the barrels out unless your a machinist. I think RWS uses a swage technique to install the barrels, it’s a little more complicated than that as they have to keep the barrel aligned when the install it.
I too wanted to do the same thing with my T01 .177 M48, I wanted a .20, .22, and .25 barrels. What I have now is a .22 T05 M52, a .22 T06 M54, and my original .177 T01 M48. The .22 makes better use of the power that these guns make and pellets are cheaper than the .25, though a few dollars more than .177. The .20 is probably the BEST caliber but the .20 RWS sidelevers are a bit hard to find with reasonable prices and local places do not carry .20 pellets. I am satisfied with the .22 cal, especially since I have other airguns in the same caliber.
My idea of the switch barrel was to chop the barrel and to drill/ream the hole and install a bushing, and thread the action. After this I would get the 4 barrels threaded and use a lock collar similar to a Savage…
These rifles already hammer scopes so whatever barrel retention device is used might not hold up either and besides you can’t have too many rifles…

it out. 760 fps wit I think was a 22 JSB, he was busy of course
said it is doing fine

One improvement I’ve noticed in the new ’48’s’ is a safety button on top that prevents the cocking lever from being closed accidentally (as on your fingers)
That massive spring can pop that lever back with serious authority and would break any unwary fingers. After you cock the new ones, you have to depress the cocking lever safety button, before you can return it to it’s barrel position.
I did a chrony on my neighbor’s new .22 caliber ’48’, and it was doing 830 fps with 14.6 Benji pellets. He shot completely through a large Cottonmouth, and put a nasty dent in the deck board which it was lying on. Don’t under-estimate the range on these bad boys either, they will toss a pellet well beyond 200 yards.
These are seriously powerful for a springer. Heavy as a 2X6 and packs the same wallop.
