Q:

.22 or .25 Mutant?

I’ve spent a lot of time this year flip flopping on what I want for my first bullpup. I had it narrowed down to a .25 Vulcan and then the other night I fired my .25 Marauder. While I like power, the sound made me reconsider a .25 in anything since I do mostly night pest control. Also due to circumstances it looks like I’ll have to cut into the funds I had reserved for a bullpup to get some new truck tires. That puts me smack dab back in the price range for a Mutant later in November if I get lucky.

Currently the things I’m taking down at night are raccoons at about 40yds, and during the day I limit myself to squirrels up to 50 to 60yds. Practice wise I shoot spinners 40yds at night. So, do I opt for the .25 and hope its quiet enough or get the .22?

If they move the cocking to the middle and maybe even do a biathlon type lever I’ll buy a .25 too.

That would settle it for a lot of us. Put all other bullpups out of my mind.

I just heard someone called the manufacturer in Ukraine and the .25s won’t be ready until January

Dear Forum Mutants…

I certainly hope someone will post their thoughts when they get their hands on a .25 Mutant…of any length:

1. How loud is it?

2. What’s the shot count?

3. What fps/fpe does it produce?

4. Other comments…

I absolutely love my .22 Mutant Standard. Got to take it hunting for the first time yesterday and it was an absolute laser. If the .25s turn out to be like these .22 I will also be buying a .25 Standard in a heartbeat. If only they were available already….

I can take the LDC off my Mutant 22 and it is just as quiet as my Cricket with a seven inch LDC..
If the Mutant 25 is anything like the 22 , Its going to be good and quiet,
All things being equal I am betting the 25 Mutant will be just as quiet as my 25 Cricket with a seven inch LDC,
Just hide and watch,

A short powerful .25 bullpup that’s quiet in stock form doesn’t exist. Yes you can make it quieter with an LDC but that would add some length. My definition of a short bullpup is 26″ or less. There are bullpups out there that measures over 30″. A .22 mutant short in stock form is fairly quiet but it still has a little pop to it. The best way I can describe the sound is like a light bulb popping but much louder. Since it doesn’t have a cracking or pinging sound it doesn’t appear as loud. Somehow they designed the mutant to not have a ping at all which is rather impressive. It would be interesting to hear how a .25 mutant standard or short would fair sound wise.

I hadn’t even considered getting a shorty in either caliber. One of the main things that has kept the Mutant near the top of my list was its weight and length. I had considered the LDC+adapter combo, but I am hoping for quiet right from the start. Currently my most quiet rifle that I’ve been using to handle the critters is my regulated .22 Marauder with a MM barrel and an SSG. If I can get a .25 Mutant down to that level of quiet or close to it then the choice is a no brainer.

The FPE on target to kill a raccoon ranges from 10 FPE to 15 FPE depending on the source. Even a .22 Mutant Shorty shooting at 28 FPE at muzzle can have sufficient retained energy (18+ FPE) at 40 yards depending on the choice of pellets. My Mutant Shorty is bone stock and just by tweaking the HST, it gets 28 FPE at muzzle shooting the lighter JSB Jumbo Express 14.35gr. I have not tried the heavier pellets, but the general rule is that heavier pellets get more FPE at muzzle and retains more over distance.

In other words, raccoons at 40 yards should be no problem even with a Mutant Shorty in .22. A Mutant Standard has more FPE at muzzle and more shot count, check Motorhead’s posts for details. Just looking at the numbers, it may not be necessary to get a .25.

And yes, Donny’s Fatboy LDC is quite effective. You will need an end-cap to UNF adapter. but there are more sources and possibly less expensive. Others can chime in regarding where they got their adapters.

The Fatboy is an LDC made by Donny here on the forum. It is said to be quite effective!

I’ve owned the Vulcan and it is a nice gun. However, it has tiny hex head screws that had a tendency to snap the heads off when I wanted to disassemble the gun. My Vulcan was .25 caliber and had plenty of power. I sold it.

If you decide to get a Mutant in .25 caliber…may I suggest you get the “Standard” and not the “Shorty”?

While the Shorty should give plenty of knock-down power…a Standard has a longer barrel and air cylinder. That equates to maximum fps and fpe from the gun, as well as a lot bigger shot count. It would be quite nice for what you have in mind, and I don’t know how loud the .25 will be, but rest assured an ldc will be produced to make it whisper quiet!

The Mutant is the best built bullpup I have ever owned. It would be a good choice.

Can’t you just add a LDC to the .25?
