.25 cricket shot count
What kind of shot count are you guys getting from your crickets? I have been fiddling with mine and I feel like I get a rediculous amount of shots from this gun.When I got the gun originally it was shooting pretty hot, 955+ with jsb’s. I never really took note of my shot count or recorded any shot strings. I just got it, shot the heck out if it, and took it hunting. I never needed more than a 220 bar fill for an afternoon in the woods. I think 955 is a little too much for my needs, so with a little tweaking, I have her shooting a solid 920. I was at the range last week, and was on my 7th magazine before I thought I might need to refill. To my suprise I was still at 125 bar. I haven’t recorded a whole shot string, just 10 or so shots to get a ball park so maybe im shooting over a huge spread? Seems too good to be true.

I don’t have a pressure tester for my reg, but it seemed to fall off at about 125-130 bar from the factory. I tightened it up a little, and I think I am around 115 bar now. I just took note of the regulator length with a set of calipers before I made any adjustments. Maybe one of these other guys can chime in to help a bit.
What is the reg pressure for .25?

I must have misunderstood the part of your post that you implied your part of all these tank conversations.
When I was first considering getting a PCP I must have read 7000 threads about the dangers of CF tanks. They lead to non stop argument, one guy says hey kid you are going to shoot your eye out with that tank. The next guy says these things are good for 30 years in Europe, and fifty in Africa. Then the conversation circles into expiration dates, and how dangerous it is to refill an untested tank. Every one knows more than the last guy about it. I was just hoping to know what kind of shot count I could hope for… :whistle:

I’m curious.. you’ve only made a couple posts here.. which conversations about the dangers of tanks are you referring to?
I also have a 44cf tank and a shoebox. Same fill setup. I haven’t counted how many times I can fill my Cricket with it.. Im guessing a dozen fill ups to 220bar before my CF tank drops below 220bar itself. I live dangerously, stupidly- some may call it, I fill my CF tank to 4,700psi. The first time I used my shoebox, it didn’t automatically shut off until 4,700.. So I didn’t bother adjusting it, I just let it. -save your advice/warnings, Im not the only one who does this.
My Prod bull pup on the other hand, thats my plinker I shoot the hell out of. No way I could count how many fills I could get from my CF tank with the Prod.. the air gun tank calculator from AOA’s website tells me 240 fills!
I found their calculator to be a little optimistic but I know I could shoot my Mrod a zillion times as well. I used to just run my tank under 3k psi and leave it tethered to my gun at the range. Lots of shots and zero filling. I would be more than satisfied with a dozen fills out of my tank. That is a lot of shooting for sure!

I also have a Great White tank. I like it right where it’s at when filled 4500 psi. End of story for me.
Salt’s got it right on tank safety. Use the pressure vessel as intended and be safe.
On a technical note, there’s another factor that uses up safety margin, and that’s fatigue. The more the tank is used, the weaker it gets.
So, there a number of things that eat into the safety factor, tank manufacturing variations, gauge error, operator error, temperature effects, physical abuse, fatigue and others. Safety margins are there for a reason.

Well.. the Scott tanks, I don’t know about the others, have built in burst discs.. so if its a pressure problem.. the safety should give way before anything “bad” happens. Ive read the disc gives way at 4,900psi.. I don’t know how accurate that is, and I’m not willing to find out. I think the real danger is puncturing the tank somehow.
BUT, it is good that people preach about not overfilling tanks.. people should be cautious and treat them like they’re bombs(they are). But, I think for us guys who have had experience in the hobby for a while, know the dangers, know what damage to check the tank for, are sensible.. we know its no big deal to go a couple hundred over. Salts completely right though (sorry bud).. I wouldn’t have even refuted him, but I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.. I was touchy.. a little overly sensitive, I don’t know. When publicly speaking out in the open forums it should be condemned. I’m in the wrong.
Wow I got a great white tank, The experts that fill my tank to 4500 PSI say this tank will take 6000 easy, Its a built in safety thing,
Now I have filled to 5000 psi and it dropped to about 4700 Psi when I got it home… They took one look at this tank and said its a very good over built tank I guess Joe knows that,,, No One will tell you to over fill a tank, but there is a built in safety margin built in to the tanks….
How many people are killed by these tanks each year? I could not find any inn the past 10 years???????

Let me ask Salt.. Just debating here-
My Tank is a Scott, used and purchased from the local firehouse.
I see a lot when this debate pops up people are worried about the pressure and temperature.
As it’s been said- they are tested to way higher pressures.. 200 extra psi is a silent fart in a bucket compared to the total amount the tank could hold.
And the issue of temperature- the most bogus excuse in **my opinion.
My tank in particular, and most SCBA tanks I’m guessing, are used and made for firefighters..
These tanks are worn into burning buildings.. A little hotter than the trunk of your car. These tanks are made to take crazy abuse! If they were as fragile as everyone goes around saying, every firefighter who ran into a burning building would explode like a cherry bomb. You work in high pressure gas and liquids systems for a living.. There’s always a couple guys who are in that field who chime in when anything like this is mentioned- funny thing is, they usually begin arguing with eachother. Some say tanks are fragile, some say they’re strong, goes to show that even though someone works in that field, it’s still opinion as to the durability of tanks (within reason).
The biggest concern from what the experts in the pressure field usually say on forums is the physical condition of the tank. If it has a dent/puncture in the resin that’s deeper than ____* the tank could be dangerous.

First off, let me be perfectly clear, I am NOT PREACHING TO YOU Haggard, but for the benefit of others I must comment on your over-pressurization of the CF tanks… I do high pressure gas and liquid systems for a living. I’ve got almost 40 years experience in the high pressure equipment industry. I can tell you that IF you survive the catastrophic failure of a carbon fiber tank, you won’t be inclined to over-pressure another one. There is some serious potential energy stored in that tank at 4,700 psi, and for instance if you pressured it to that level and put it in the trunk of your car and left it there during the day while the sun is out, the heating from the sun could very likely take it to its destructive pressure. If that happened, it would destroy your car totally and likely anything nearby. For the rest of us I will say that Safety rules and regulations were put in place to minimize the risk of working with high pressure gasses, and they should be followed very carefully. These carbon fiber tanks are fantastic tools for us to work with, but they are only as good as the weakest fiber in the tank. Their failure mode is generally brittle in nature as opposed to a steel or aluminum tank which may stretch and begin to leak at it’s valve or other connection instead of exploding. A carbon fiber’s modulus of elasticity is practically zero… They’re like glass (as in fiberglass)… So if their tensile strength is exceeded, they let go practically instantly… their only elasticity is from the resin used to bind them together and the geometric shape of the bottles (why they pretty much all have rounded bottoms). So you just keep over-pressurizing your tank if you want, but I’d ask you to be considerate of the other lives around you and make sure you are alone when you do this.

Your 44cf probably settles a little lower I’d guess, maybe 4500-4600. They hydro them to 7500 for the elasticity test anyway. Probably no more risky than speeding down the interstate at 75-80, at least with the idiots around here it wouldn’t be !!!!

As of now I have never filled my cricket above 190 bar. My tank is regulated to 185 bar. My cricket gets 4 mags (48 shots) from 185 to 90 bar at 908 fps.
