.257 cal HP’s
Got my mold back from Eric at Hollow Point Mold Services. I got up early and went to casting some up. Eric told me that the bullet would drop roughly up to 5 grains with his standard HP pin mod. After casting, i went down stairs with 5 randomly picked bullets out of 200 and they weighed approximately: #1-69.7 grs, #2-70.5 grs, #3-70.5 grs, #4-70.5 grs and #5-70.4 grs. HELL A CONSISTENT IF I SAY SO MYSELF.
5 randomly picked bullets out of a batch of roughly 200 weighed 69.7-70.5-70.5-70.5-70.4 grs. I would say that’s darned consistent. Wouldn’t you?

I had a 6.5 S&W Mdl 29 shipped from the factory on November 27th 1963.
I had the third locking point put in and magnaported and hard chromed by Magnaport.
I used two 4 cavity 420421’s to keep them from overheating to cast with. They barely kept up with my shooting.
I owned it for close 30 years and carried it in a original Georg shoulder holster, I gave it to my oldest son the day he killed a cow elk with it and a NEI 320 grain bullet I also cast.
It never ceases to amases me how current bullet peddlers either chose to ignore or are ignorant of the design acomplishments of Elmer Keith and think they can reinvent the wheel.

Shooting Keith SWC’s. Ahh, those were the days. Care free for me back then! Loved a Keith in a .41Mag Smith! I killed a lot of ground hogs with that combo!

I finally got around to trying the 257420 Hollowpoints in my Talon SSS.
Interesting side note, that 257420 was the design just before Elmer Keiths’ famed 44 SWC bullet the 429421 for those of you interested in cast bullet trivia, pretty friggen impressive when you realize I know things like that and I don’t even own a bullet company, eh Tof?
I sized them down to .255 and then I filled to 3300, just because that is where I got it shut off and shot three shots then filled again and shot 2 at 40 yards.
I had a 3/4 inch group, a low of 805FPS and a high of 825FPS and a average of 815 out of my 17 inch barrel.
That puts it right on the heels of a self defence HP 32 acp round, and a real slugger for night raiding varmits.
At 825 that is 105 FPE and Chairgun tells me it would get 13 inches of penetration at the muzzle and 12.5 inches at 100 yards or at least a projectile of that weight would, how the HP would effect penetration would have to be determined in field tests, but I would assume it would give good energy dump and a blood trail coming from both sides of whatever you shot.

Cmon guys, I was wanting to know if a .177 poly Corbin “bullet ball” would fit in the hollow point cavity and then have the bullet’s hollow point cavity swaged closed over the ball to make something like a ballistic tip CF bullet.
I am just trying to find a use for all of the RCE swaging stuff that I bought, didn’t work out and is just sitting here collecting dust. I have a .258’ swaging die for it and I could easily use it to close up the hollow point end after I put the bullet ball in the cast bullet. Doing that might give me a better BC than the regular HP bullet.
I am waiting for a LBT 55 and 60 grain version of the 2 driving band 73 grain LBT copy of the Lyman 257420, but for air gun, that Doug got from Veral.
I don’t know how far I can turn the Boss 30 cal up and shoot my cast .257” bullets out of the Hart barrels that I am not so patently waiting for. I don’t think that I can turn it up far enough to shoot 73 grain bullets at 900 fps. I might be able to get it to shoot the low drag 55 and 60 grain bullets at 900. I am waiting for the 55 and 60 grain LBT molds and I will then ship them out and have hollow point cavities made in 2 of the 4 LBT cavities.
Doing that will give me a 50 grain hollow point, a 55 grain solid, a 55 grain hollow point and a 60 grain solid to try out.
From Cedric’s pictures, it doesn’t look like the ID of the cavity is .177 or larger so the bullet balls won’t work. I might have to find a different source for smaller balls.
Cut me a little slack here guys. I am new to this casting stuff.

That mold is a keeper. I hope you remember the heat for the mold and lead that got you those nice slugs! I’ve got a couple molds I just don’t know why I haven’t thrown from a car window…. no matter what, they can’t make a nice clean HP… I guess I have delusions of an epiphany!
