Q:

.257 GOODNESS!

It finally all came together today, and Woo-Hoo!!!

I was having problems with accuracy and ofcourse neglegted the obvious area to look first. I talked to RC, and we both though it was probably a leading issue, but happily “NOT”!

My LDC has been very effective for my .25 with Kings, but was loud with the .257 barrel. Than, and I had each chamber wrapped with white scrubby pad type material to asorb a bit of the noise. But— The .257 blew it all to Hell! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ And was causing major clipping. We have all heard of the issues clipping causes, and yet, In my excitement, I never thought to check the LDC. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Well, I did check it this morning, and it was a frigg’n Mess!

I re-did every thing, and took out all the stuff’ns. Which increased the interior volume. It was a lot quieter. NOt Doug’s LDC quiet, or Tonys Talon Tune Quiet, but not a big “KER_BOOM!

Now here’s the good part. She started shooting like a laser at the 80 yard range I had set up. And I do mean like a LASER!!!

I am going to try to post a few pic’s of the results. Note, the target shows the hits with the F’d up LDC and the final results with everything set-up right.

Let me know what you thinK!http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r294/mlovett_photo/08-DSC01921_zps48cd05ab.jpghttp://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r294/mlovett_photo/08-DSC01921_zps48cd05ab.jpg” target=”_blank”>
This pic is 10d bullets fired into a stump at 60 yards. This is what we called Stacked!LOL!

This is how every thing arrived from Doug, (Dyotat100)[/img]

Every one was excited to see what was in the Tube![/img] r[/img]

Even Foxy came out woke up to see what all the excitemet was all about!
And of course tried to Hog the bench! Grrrr! Final results were .313 at 80 yards with 5 shots of the .257420 Hollow Points that RoachCreek cast up. Woo-Hoo!!!

Charlie, thanks for the offer for the slugs and; the kind words. I just heard back from Doug and It looks like I am not going to get my full house Talondor for a while so, I wonโ€™t have a use for the heavy 257420 slugs for a while.

Oh well, that gives me some time to have the Lyman molds hollow pointed and also gives me time to mill the gas check off of one of them. I plan on milling a little off of the base each time and seeing how light I can go before the accuracy starts to suffer. I was never after a 200 fpe airgun, for way over 2 years now, I have been trying to come up with an air rifle that would shoot consistent ยฝโ€ 100 yard groups.

Havenโ€™t had much luck, so far!

Earlier today, I tried to order a .258โ€ Lee sizing die from Lee and they told me that they havenโ€™t caught up with production and still werenโ€™t taking any special orders. They told me to call back in a couple of months. They told me the same thing in Jan and also in April.

I hung up and found a new Lee .258โ€ sizing die on Ebay, $38 shipped and I ordered 2, 257420 molds and a handle for $209. Impulse buying at its best!

Mike, both Hart barrels slug .250โ€/.2575โ€ and are 1 in 14โ€ twist.

I had a grouping issue both last evening, and today. Couldn’t figure it out. checked the LDC, barrel, scope. And it just kept shootinglike crap!

Well, I obviously had a “Here’s your sign Moment”. ๐Ÿ˜ณ The forward Stock screw was loose in the Mad Dog Stock. tightened it up, an bamo! Back to Tack Driver again!

I need to Cast some better bullets. The ones I cast last night, were about 50% fubar.

RC, I need to pick your brain again on casting. May-be when we get back from the Doctors tommorow.

Oh Shit! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ( and lots of it!), Your really blew the Crap out’a that GS! ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Don’t know about the 1000’s with this stock bottle. It only gets 5 shots before a drop, so probably need to stick to where I am. And I need to talk to Tof. about the bottle he is using now. It seems just about right without making the gun Butt Ugly. ๐Ÿ˜†

Tedd,

If you want some 257420 HP’s to try let me know, the air gun world owes you big time, it would be just a meager payment, but I have a lot of HP’s on hand.

Mike, 1000 FPS is do able, I had to turn the Haley down to stay under supersonic.

RC

257420 at 1100 FPS Awwwwwwwwwgggghhhh how cute!

OG,
Milling off the gas check is a good idea. If it still flys well it will have been a super good idea ๐Ÿ˜€ Looking forward to the results.

Thanks Tof! And I really do appreciat it. Fuck’n big Time!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Yeah, we’re kinda that way I guess. There ya go!

Tedd, What are the dia’s of the LTB’s as cast? and wondering what the twist rate of the hart bbl. is.

I have no Idea how the gas check area being removed will effect it, but I did get the chance to shoot some 257420 with the hollow point in them that RC sent for me to try. Results ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Damed accurate! Best Groups so far. The HP dropped the weight about 4 grains I think. The 420 is 74 in pure lead, and the holow point is 70-71 Grains. The HP’s were even better than the 420 un-altered bullets were. Would love to see a lighter version like you are thinking about.
But not willing to experiment on my ONLY mould. ๐Ÿ˜†
I was getting 940 fps with the 420’s and would like to see 1000 fps. Why, well, so it would be as good as a Gamo .177 of course! :8:

A 30 EdGun? Now that sounds like a real winner. I’ll bet it should make for an interesting .257 Gun!

Going out side to melt some dirty dead in a few minutes. I’m loving shooting the .257 “WAY” too much! ๐Ÿ˜€

Thank you for all you have done.

All this year, I have been trying to get my R3 25 cal long/.257 Hart barrel and my 30 cal Boss/.257 Hart barrel projects going.

The Matador/Hart barrel setup does NOT like the 42 and 51 grain LBT bullets that I cast for it. We are talking 2-3 inch groups at 100 yards. I didnโ€™t use the Wheeler bore lap kit on that barrel, yet. The Boss/257 Hart barrel got the bore lap treatment.

The Boss project has been a nightmare. It came setup to shoot the 45.6 grain JSBs at 870 fps. A heavier hammer spring, heavier hammer and an Altros regulator didnโ€™t increase the speeds any. I was able to remove the stock reg and get the speeds up but, I had a bell curve that I couldnโ€™t live with and it only got 15 useable shots on a fill.

For the last couple of weeks, I have been chasing air leaks on the Boss. I ordered a new air valve, air valve seat, the hard plastic that FX uses for a seal under the male foster fill fitting and, I thought that I had the leaks finally fixed. NOT, It lost 1000 psi in the last 36 hours. I have extra O rings and a couple extra fill fitting plastic seals and I will give it one more chance this week. If it doesnโ€™t straighten up and fly right, it will go back to stock and I will try to get what I can out of it on the Yellow.

Right now, the plan is to shoot the Boss tethered and see how the LBT bullets do at 100 yards.

Ed has told me that I should see my R3 30 cal Matador late August-early September. I have a couple of Hart .257โ€ barrels that will fit on it.

I have 4, 4 cavity LBT molds, none of them ended up looking like the prints that I sent Veral. He said that he would replace them but, he asked me to try them first. The 42 and 51 grain molds are going back, I will know this week if I am keeping the 55 and 60 grain molds.

About 20 minutes ago; I said fuck it and I ordered 2 Lyman 25740 molds and a set of handles from Optics Planet. Cost me $208.66 with shipping. I plan on milling one of the molds down to remove the gas check and I hope to come up with a 50-55 grain bullet. I might have to send it off and have a hollow point made out of it to get it down to that weight or, I can mill the last driving band off also.

The other 257420 mold is to be used on my Talondor that Doug told me would arrive in August.

Sorry for the thread hijack but: thatโ€™s what I am known for. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

OK Mike, so my last SUBMIT stuck. So now I can reply some more.

I doubt the interest in the 257 will diminish. Especially when guys like you report groups like that. That’s a great group ๐Ÿ˜Ž

The 257 and cast bullet project is a little more work than shooting a diablo gun. Cause with pellets, you just buy them and wait for shipping. And some folks just aren’t into doing manual work and make excuses for not buying casting equipment. its NOT expensive and certainly not anywhere near the cost of even the cheapest pcp airgun. The 257 is also a bit more powerful than all diablo guns and some Korean slug guns. After all, in the right gun, it can make OVER 200 FPE! And that in itself is a turn off for some. But I can understand that especially when many air gunners range is their 75 foot back yard ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

ANd there is a SCIENCE to so much power in that small of a bullet. SEE, I JUST EXPLAIN “WHAT” the science is. This is why its such a formidable round.

Mike,

Yes, I read and replied to this post before. Hmmmmmmm, you and I are both having some TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES with these computers and websites. I HIT SUBMIT……..I swear!

But anyways. that a great FUCKING GROUP with a GREAT FUCKING BULLET……….I had to add cursing in that sentence with you living in Texas and all. You know how YAWL are………lol!

Thanks for posting RC! ๐Ÿ˜€

Maw, the tank pressure is 3200 starting, which gives the 941 at 8.5 power wheel, so ๐Ÿ˜€ more is there just waiting!

I guess I get used to talking to you everyday on the phone and forget to post about your groups.

Great group but I like the pets better.

Now you need to find some of those Texas great open spaces and stretch the legs on that machine.

Regards,

Roachcreek

oldgoat”]Hey Mike:

Great shooting!

Are you about done with that barrel that I sent you just for โ€œtesting purposesโ€? ๐Ÿ˜•

Just pulling your chain and I am really happy that things are finally coming together for you! ๐Ÿ˜†

You could use some good luck for a change!

Please quit breaking shit and show us some more groups!

I got bumped to third shift; I will try to call you sometime in the morning this week.

Please tell Manuela that I said HELLO! She is such a sweethart to talk to!

Well now if your talking about the April- fools .250 barrel., ๐Ÿ˜ณ “Y” Yes, Yes I am. ๐Ÿ˜† Now if your talking about the barrel you sent to Dyotat to build for me, Not “”NO”, But Hell No! Not by a long shot!!!!! Man I love this thing. Hoping the lead ordered from RJ will show up soon. This thing can put some lead out!

OK Guys, Thanks for posting. I though the interest had wayned on the .257’s!

Kinda hoping Cedric and RC will pop in.

Now the spec’s for MAW and 80. ๐Ÿ˜€ So far, the it is throwing the Lyman 257420 at 940+ with the power wheel set at 9 and a small rubber “O” ring behind the top hat. So she can definitely do more. ๐Ÿ˜‰ The BC of the Lyman really shows. It has roughly half the drop at 80 yards when sighted in at 50 than the .25 Kings. Which are not bad themselves. In fact, a little less than half the drop.

Can’t wait to be able to stretch it’s legs out at longer ranges! ๐Ÿ˜€ “Long Range-The next best thing to being there”!

Do you like 3rd better than 1st? I know you thought you were going to be stuck on 1st for a long time.

He has a post on them a few pages back in the for sale section. Yeah, I know. PITA! ๐Ÿ˜†
