.257 up and shooting!
Got a package from Doug last week 😀 .257 valve! Oooooo yaaaa 😎 😎 😎 😎 I was exspecting it, so had a few hundred .257 bullets cast and ready to go.
The .257 barrel is a 1in 10 twist and just under24”.
Spent about 3 hrs last weekend firelaping the barrel. A messy job, but worth it. Cleans a lot easier and accuracy is a little better. Im going to enjoy shooting it for a while and maybe do another session with the firelaping in a couple weeks.
FPS is mid to upper 800s. I think the tighter twist and the shorter 24” barrel is going to keep me out of the 900s, but who knows when the barrel is broke in good it may gain some more.
That being said it shoots really hard and far. The gun report till impact time at 100yards is very short compared to pellets shot that far, so the .257 is still moving way fast down range.
I would love to check the speed about 60yards out, but I dont trust my shooting enough to risk my only Chrony 😯
The group in the pic was shot at 60yards. Have not shot paper at 100yards yet, but I did knock down some cans that far.
This cast bullet stuff is a lot of fun, but you need some serious power to move these heavy bullets down range and Doug’s valve more than gets it done!
10shots 60 yards

I’d be interested in those 60 yd velocities as well and not too worried about damaging your chronograph. I’d set it up on a sawhorse facing you end to end, nail a couple of scab pieces to one end of the sawhorse so you can set the chrony behind them and then hang your pellet trap upside down so it sets at a 90 degree angle and protects the chrony. If you have to use sunscreens replace the rods with wooden dowels in case your rifle misses. Post the results when you get them, inquiring minds want to know!

Will, I was limited to 50yards out on the chrony and still have Sun light.
4 shots 50yards out 813.5, 810.9, 811.1, 799.1 Also know that I was shooting a stock AF tank and my 1in10 24” barrel is only shooting in the 850s at point blank thru the Chrony, so still a lot of punch moving down range.
