Q:

.257 up and shooting!

Got a package from Doug last week 😀 .257 valve! Oooooo yaaaa 😎 😎 😎 😎 I was exspecting it, so had a few hundred .257 bullets cast and ready to go.
The .257 barrel is a 1in 10 twist and just under24”.

Spent about 3 hrs last weekend firelaping the barrel. A messy job, but worth it. Cleans a lot easier and accuracy is a little better. Im going to enjoy shooting it for a while and maybe do another session with the firelaping in a couple weeks.

FPS is mid to upper 800s. I think the tighter twist and the shorter 24” barrel is going to keep me out of the 900s, but who knows when the barrel is broke in good it may gain some more.

That being said it shoots really hard and far. The gun report till impact time at 100yards is very short compared to pellets shot that far, so the .257 is still moving way fast down range.

I would love to check the speed about 60yards out, but I dont trust my shooting enough to risk my only Chrony 😯

The group in the pic was shot at 60yards. Have not shot paper at 100yards yet, but I did knock down some cans that far.

This cast bullet stuff is a lot of fun, but you need some serious power to move these heavy bullets down range and Doug’s valve more than gets it done!

10shots 60 yards

tapdagger,

I’d be interested in those 60 yd velocities as well and not too worried about damaging your chronograph. I’d set it up on a sawhorse facing you end to end, nail a couple of scab pieces to one end of the sawhorse so you can set the chrony behind them and then hang your pellet trap upside down so it sets at a 90 degree angle and protects the chrony. If you have to use sunscreens replace the rods with wooden dowels in case your rifle misses. Post the results when you get them, inquiring minds want to know!

Will, I was limited to 50yards out on the chrony and still have Sun light.

4 shots 50yards out 813.5, 810.9, 811.1, 799.1 Also know that I was shooting a stock AF tank and my 1in10 24” barrel is only shooting in the 850s at point blank thru the Chrony, so still a lot of punch moving down range.

RoachCreak sent me to a site that is much more indepth than chairgun. You can see what the velocity is for the bullets. They evern have the Lyman 257420 listed. Where a pellet is really loosing speed, the .257 is not loosing much at all. In fact, the 257 is doing better at 300 yards than the .25 pellet at 75 yards! 😯

Too damed sleepy to look it up right now. Will post it tomorrow.

Did a penetration test at 75yards. 4 shots thru a 2×3. Still got a lot of punch at that distance.
Knife, I looked up that Flitz and lots of good reviews. Next midway order I’ll pick up some Flitz and Cedric’s JB past as well. Maybe start with the past and end with the flitz. with lots of shooting in between 😀

Cedric, what is the differences between the JB products. Don’t they have several different grades? Is the paste the finner one?

Mike,

thats all i used on mine. JB BORE past to be exact. then over time, things just got more and more accurate. I can now go a while inbetween cleanings. oh yeah, gotta go clean my barrel….lol!

My Barrel is only 21 inches and so far, So-Good! 😉

TD, after fire lapping, you may eventually want to pick up a .25 cal. bore mop and coat it with Flitz and really go to town on it. It helps a lot! 😉

TAG,

Congrats! I wasn’t able to get over to Dougs to slobber all over your gun like i did SOMEBODY else…..lol!

Seriously though, i like the gun and you are off to a good start. The more you shoot these barrels them MORE accurate they become. Im also glad you choose a little shorter barrel as it adds to the overall INFO thats out on the 257. We can now start looking at the effects of a short vs long barrel with accuracy and power being the header.

Can’t wait to hear more about your 257 adventures

Knife,
The bullet is a lyman 257420 and while the shroud looks as long as your arm there are actually only 4 baffels tward the end, so mine barks kind of loud too 🙁

Looking Good there Guy! 😀

Now quite f’n with me and tell me what bullets! Love the breach stiffening fixture.

And tell me about the LDC. Mine is barking a little too loud. It works fine for the .25 shooting, but it still sounds like a canon on the .257! 😯

I talked to doug just an hour or too after he shipped it to you. But I kept quiet. 😈 I figured the wait was hard enough, and didn’t want to screw up your sleep. 😆
