30 cal Standard Matador Shot String – 500 Total Shots On Gun
Factory setting String after 500 shots on gun.
I need the experts on this one. 😯
I went from 220 down to about 120. There are 33 shots on the tape. There is the wild jump at the end with the 8 high shots so reg is high for the 840s and maybe about right for 870. What do you think?

If you want to use 845fps setting you will need to turn down the regulator and adjust hst.
Or you can up the speed to $880fps and it will probably flatten the string, but will give you much less shots.

Thought that by increasing the Hst will open the valve more. by increasing hst even more it will keep the valve open longer and waist air… I may be wrong . please correct me…
Very interesting. Well I adjusted the HST up to where three shots were 870-873 fps. My adjustment before was at 867 so I am on the right side of the reg at least. 🙂 I really don’t want to push the Standard 30 more than this. I’ll do a full string when I am supposed to be working tomorrow. 😯
btw – the $5 Lowes 3 bulb LED puck lights worked great with the Chrony in the dark on my covered deck for a few shots. I got one err2 until I got it aligned.
If we look at RTE’s string the same way (I think I have the velocities correct the image was a bit too small to see everything clearly).
His largest jump is 26fps.
Low high: 11 fps
Mid high: 14 fps
High high: 26 fps (dropping the last shot).
On some of my longer strings (150 shots) a pattern begins to develop that we are starting to see here. There are about five to ten shots that are consistent, then one or more that start to vary and then a cluster of good shots.
To me, my regulated 177 should run a full length string and give me no more than a 10fps jump between shots, if it was 8fps i’d be pretty happy, this would match the regulators seen in other high end match rifles.

I’m beginning to believe that unless the HST is kicking the valve enough to open it all the way then you’ll get velocity jumps.
I run a ‘jump’ calculation in my chrony strings, the smaller the jump the better obviously. Right now my biggest issue to tackle with my 177 Matador is the velocity jump, it is accurate and gets lots of shots but the velocity jump is still about the same as mu unregulated USFT.
Looks at shots 10/11, 17/18 & 23/24… Shots 23/24 is twice as high as the low high (10fps).
Low high: 9fps
Mid high: 12.5fps
High high: 20 fps (i’m ignoring the last two shots in the string).
I find this way of looking at the string more useful than standard deviation since we take one shot after another with the expectation of it hitting in the same spot. The less jump between shot the less room for error from one shot to another.
For such a large caliber 20fps is not a big deal, for smaller calibers the same jump is more of an issue.

I am wondering if Ed has them adjusted like this to save the valve as long as possible? Reg up and HST down a bit…. If I turn it up where I want will I make the valve life short-lived?

Thanks guy! I’ll try going up on the HST and am hoping it settles in around 870 fps with at least 25 shots. 845 is too slow but it is mighty accurate before that POI shift when it jumps to 870. I am a hunter rather than a target shooter. Shot count is kind of unimportant beyond 25 or so. I think higher than about 870 fps on the Standard may take it’s toll on the valve sooner with the shorter barrel.
Lifetime accumulated shots on the gun I was assuming.
Secoda, what do you mean by writing 500 shots in the subject? i believe you meant 50 shots… isn’t it?
looks like the same only different tails up at the end just like mine at the end, I am going to go with the old standby of setting the reg down in my case as I want 885-890 and then HST up to peak FPS and then back off a tinge until this yeilds me the 885-890 I think I want. Looking like I can get my 28 shots easy with a stronger fill. Here is my last one before Reg. changes for comparison.

If the hammer is pounding the valve it might bend the stem. I think this is a long shot though, the stem should be built to withstand it as long as there is enough pressure in the air chamber. I’d be willing to bet that the valve stem is larger than the 25 caliber valve stem, I could be wrong…
The thing with the regulator is you want to use all the air in the chamber, if the reg is set properly then there is no real way to waste air. I think if there is air in the chamber then the regulator doesn’t work as well as it should (due to back pressure).
