Q:

410 Accuracy

Now that I have a bench rest and have been able to shoot my 410 without my poor form being a factor I’ve noticed that it isnt quite 1 hole accurate.

The groups arent big, but one shot will be noticably left of the bull, the next will be to the right, then a couple above or below.

I dont know if this is a new problem as I’ve always shot it either offhand or an impromptu rest consisting of a tree or my knee and its always been fine for shooting squirrels.

I shot it in a competition last weekend and scored just 4 points behind a BSA S-10 in terribly windy condition’s – but still noticed that in my basement or in my yard with no wind and using my only other PCP as a comparison that it is not as accurate as my Talon SS.

So I’m going to remove my shroud, shoot a group without to see if thats an issue.

Is power level a factor with accuracy with these? I used to shoot full power or around 12 fpe, but recently have had it set to 22fpe….

So I just got done testing the JSB 18gr, these pellets work GREAT in my s410. 1/4″ holes @ 25 yrds not hard to come by, some a little bigger. Not sure why, but my gun seems to have changed it’s mind about the CP’s… they’re just not doing as good as when I first used them. But these JSB heavies could end up up being my guns main diet. It’s always good finding new pellets that your gun loves eh.

Thanks Saugus. I should have the number here somewhere. That is where my daughter got her Discovery. What was the price from Mac1 for the 18gr JSB? Thanks again,
Kenny.

Man I looked everywhere for the reciept, can’t find it, and since I bought several items I can’t remember the individual price of the tins… anyways, here’s Tim’s #, give him a call he’ll tell ya. 310-327-3581

I got my JSB heavies at Straight shooters, but the ran out and short shipped my last order.

kgphotos… Today I got 4 500ct tins of the 18gr JSB at Mac1 Dist. I think he can ship them. I’ll give you his phone# if you like, give him a call. He’s got a lot more.

Saugus,
I found the same thing with my Talon. Great groups but they kept moving around on me. I would have a great group right where I wanted it and then the next group would still be small but would be a halh inch away from the last group. I could only guess that the frame and air tank assembly has enough flex that the shooter has to be extremely consistant in holding the rifle. It got very frustrating and was one of the maun reasons I started looking at the AA S410. I also looked at Pyramid Air for the 18gr. JSB and I don’t think they have them.

Riff, I’m still getting used to the new gun, but I see no POI shift that concerns me, in fact, it’s way better than my Talon SS. While my SS is capable of grouping well, the groups would slightly shift from target to target, 1st group being dead bull, 2nd being just N/W of bull, 3rd being just S/W of bull, ect ect. Could never really figure it out, and rather frustrating.

With the AA this problem is pretty much gone, as 95% of every group, regardless of how good the actual group is, hit consistantly in the center of every target, a welcome change for sure.

Those 18gr JSB’s are a pellet I really wanna try, seems like a nice compromise between the Exact 15.9er and the Kodiak, (which do fine in my gun) But I don’t see them listed at Pyramyd Air, unless I overlooked them, where can I find them?

Oh, and if you shoot the 15 gr JSBs ok, you will love the 18grs. More accurate in my gun, same POI.

POI difference is minimal with every pellet I tried. I can shoot 5 different pellets, back to back, into a 1″ circle at 50 yards repeatably.

16 gr JSB, 18gr JSB, Predators, CPs, and FTSs.

Ive shot kodiaks, they shoot well but hit a little lower. Eunjins will shoot, but tear up the breech oring. They printed 1″ at 50 yards though.

I have 3 magazines. The original and 2 aluminum ones. I like to keep 9 pellets in each when I go hunting. When I run out its time for air anyway.

If you want to use predators in the magazines, pull out the plastic tip but be careful to not bend/crush the skirts.

The 400/410 barrels are fixed to the reciever by a grub screw and locktite. The screw is accessed thru the hole in the top of the scope rail.
Use a hair dryer for heat, nothing any hotter or you will be causing damage.

There is a bushing that sits inside the shroud, goes over the end of your barrel. This bushing has 2 o-rings on it around the outside which keep the barrel centered in the shroud. The shroud is threaded to the reciever, but still flexes some if pushed. You will need a strap wrench to remove it, and a little heat doesnt hurt.

If the shroud gets moved, it pushes the barrel with it. Thats why I did what I did.

My alteration wasnt all that hard for me, but not many people have access to the carbon like I do. I had to make the shroud tube myself, the part around the tank is 1.25″ ID McMaster tubing. (We make it for them here, lucky me) I had to machine it flat on the side between the tank and shroud so it would fit.

I had the insert made in Arizona. Traded some tubing for it. The small end goes over the end of the barrel.

You could use a section the mcmaster tubing with the standard shroud tube if you so desired. The standard shroud is small enough that carbon tube fits without machining.

I didnt gain any accuracy by doing this, but my POI shift doesnt happen anymore.

Saugus,
I found (in my limited testing so far) that I like a 2900 psi fill. With a 2800psi fill I started at 969 fps then climbed to 976fps at shot #4 then fell to 923fps by shot #20. The average for 20 shots was 954fps. With a 2900psi fill I started at 953fps, climbed to 975fps at #13 and fell to 958fps at #20. Velovity didn’t fall below 920 fps untill shot #33. With the 2900psi fill the average for 20 shots was 966fps. These are with 15.8gr JSB.

Good info, thx. Those are pretty good #’s as well, and with 15.8 gr no less… yep, I’ll have to get the crony out and see how she does this weekend. And I hope I get the performance you’re getting in the fps dept. It seems these guns (same model) can vary anywhere from about 30 to 34fpe on high power.

Another thing I noticed… going from one pellet to another (JSB’s, CP’s, even Kodiaks) required very little re-zeroing, @ 20 yrds anyway, nice.

The barrel band on the 410 is made to be adjusted. You don’t need to worry about it. If you knock your barrel in the woods it is designed to move and then you can re adjust it with the barrel band.

You are fine.

A couple more questions for 410 FAC owners.. do you fill to the suggested 2900? I did this twice when first shooting the gun. It seemed to me the gun didn’t really start to sing until I did about 5 shots, so I dropped to 2800 fills, and it seems better right off the bat, as if maybe the valve was choking just a bit at the top end of 29

Also thinking about trying 18gr JSB heavies, and wondering if anyone has used them in the 410 fac.

Damn Riff, that’s quite a bit of doing to keep things straight, nice work though. I’ve been shooting my gun just about every day now, with no noticeable problems in this regard. Seems quite consistant actually.

Are these barrels considered “Free Floating” in the shroud? Wondering if the only place the barrel is solidly attached is at the receiver. I was wondering if my barrel was under any undue stress for any period of time with the bent shroud pushing against one side of it. Or maybe the shroud never touched the barrel…It seems to be shooting pretty good, but I don’t have another 410 to compare it to.

I must say I was kinda concerned to be ready to spend almost 1K on a gun that had what looked like a bent barrel. I did see the shroud ‘snap back’ to the correct position, but still wondering if it returned the the exact spot it should have, and just how critical it’s positioning is for the best accuracy, or a good procedure to assure it’s dead on.

As stated, pellet selection matters. For whatever reason, I’ve heard the same out of now two other Side Lever owners. I know my ERB SL seems to prefer Crosman Pellets at around 22fpe. At that level, I can produce regular 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards without much trouble.

If I bump up the power to 28fpe, then Kodiaks seem to do best.

Out of my older S400 and the MPR, pellet selection doesnt seem to be as critical.
