.57 MOA 212 yards
I got a call from John Bowman and he gave me some tips on bench resting the Haley and tuneing it.
After 45000 rounds thru his rifle he had aquired a vast knowledge of getting them to shoot well. He gave me pointers on the barrel hand and how to set it, how to hold the rifle and how to make a better aiming point.
So I sprayed this diamond on my 8 inch white disc.
I shot this group at the end of the day, it was so foggy I could not see the white disc with my naked eye. The group is 3.5 inches/1.7 MOA.
But the best group of the day was 5 shots into 1.5 inches/.57 MOA at 212 yards.
This was with a 3600 PSI tethered fill and 257420 cast from 25/75 % Lyman #2 and lead and Food grade silicone spray for a lube, another John Bowman tip.
I also shot the rifle at 3100 PSI for Doug so he could get an idea what I get for velocity at 3100 PSI, which was 1070 FPS, this alloy is about 20 FPS slower than lead Doug.

Does that stand for a Roach Creek Shrink Factor that only RC can utilize to shrink measured groups or; is it something that the rest of us unenlightened peasants can somehow learn to use?

Running low on air. I’ve got to either get a shoebox or a Dry Nitrogen tank. Some how. I need to find out what I need for a fill set-up for dry nitrogen, and it is within cost boundaries.

Doug, a custom machined one piece 2 band support that would put the second band halfway between the muzzle and the current band positon. But then you’d have to find a new position for the limb saver as the harmonics would change. Will it ever end? š

When i installed my Limbsaver as per instructions, i followed it too the T. IT TOOK A CRAP LOAD OF AIR TO DO IT IT ALSO….lol! And i hate to think of how much you would have to have moved yours only moving 1/2″ at a time per group…lol! And i was complaining to myself and i only have a 26-5/8″ barrel and you have a 36″.. šÆ š

Yes it is closer, but MOA is actually 1.03 so it would be 1.03×2.12=2.1836
1.5/2.1836=.6869.
Then .6869 subjected to a RCSF of .83% =.57.

I have never played with barrel harmonics as much as I have with this rifle.
First you take a 36 inch long whippy barrel, thread it thru a barrel band that has to have clearence to allow you to remove the barrel, then hang a air stripper on the end, and then force cast bullets down it with a blast of 4000PSI air, that blows thru a air stripper with 10 ports in three directions.
Before this I think using jigs and hanging tension in the glass bedding of NM M1A’s were the most barrel sensitive as far as tension on the barrel I had dealt with, then perhaps came Ruger #1 and 3’s and their pesky forearm arrangements.
Compared to this rifles barrel, whether to free float a bolt actions barrel or not is childs play.
This barrel is so whippy it will actually rattle when you carry it if your not
holding the barrel while your walking.
First the Limb Saver, per Cedrics advice, initially I had it just forward enough from the fill port to fill the rifle with a angled fitting on my fill whip. I gradually moved it until I had it about midway. While I think it did improve the grouping initially, moving it seemed to have no effect as far as I had gone.
Then per John Bowmans advice, I moved it to withn 3 inches of the air stripper.
Now the barrel band. You and I have played with these enough on 2240 builds to know that they need to be loose enough on the barrel so you can remove the barrel or they will be a headache, but we did not have 36 inch barrels on the 2240’s either. I knew somethng had to be done with the barrel band and I had been shooting it without the barrel band to see what that did when John called.
As near as I could tell, removing the band made no difference, and I could clearly see that some sort of support was needed for accuracy and for integrity to safeguard against damage.
John asked me what I had for a barrel band and mentioned Orings or taped or bare. I told him I had wondered about Orings and his responce that the taping worked better.
What taping does, is by applying the tape on the barrel when it is partially unscrewed and then screwing the barrel back down, is that it fills the void inside the barrel band, but still allows you to remove the barrel if need be. I still need to play with different wraps and tape thickness, but I really think this is one of the best mods
Personally I think most of this barrel whip problem or a lot of it could be mitigated by having a barrel shorter than the 36 inch one I ordered.
Before learning about the barrel wrapping/barrel band mod, I did in fact order a 34 inch barrel this week in 1-10 to shoot the 110 grain bullets more effeciently. Before finding the barrel band fix, 34 inches would have been too long me thinks if I had not found this mod.
Now the big mistake I did here with this last shooting session is to apply four different fixes to a single shooting session, so really it is hard to decide which one is the most valuable, but in analyzing what I have done, I think they all have value.
The lube works, and is far easier to apply than moly, along with the firelapping, it drastically cuts down on the leading which in turn lengthens the amount of time I can spend in a single shooting session.
The barrel band fix works really well, whether it is the main reason for the improvement or works hand in hand with the limb saver will be determined in future sessions.
The fact that I hold the rifle differently is also a accuracy improving modification of my shooting technique, and I have to tell you, I am not a benchrest shooter, I have won some shooting titles in the past, but it has never been associated with benchrest shooting and in fact that has always been my achilles heel in the shooting disciplines. So anything I do or learn or acquire to improve my technique is valuable.
And bear in mind, this is a 5 shot group, and for me the real test is 10 shot groups, altho I don’t expect to see a 10 shot group this tight, they are far more diffinitive.

Also, wouldn’t limbsaver placement be relative to each individual barrel? Where were you putting it on the barrel beforehand?
