A big Chuck for a little machine…

I replaced my stock chuck with a 5″ chuck. It is a little bigger.

The hole now is over 1″ and makes life a lot easier turning stock.

Tell me about it. I was just there a couple weeks ago and picked up a new chuck and arbor for the mill and a ball turning attachment…..and I dont even know when I need a ball to be turned 😛

15 mins away? Thats dangerous. Stores like that have huge electromagnets in the back that force your car into the parking lot from hundreds of yards away. Its a damn nuisance really. I think the magnetic waves mess with your head as well, takes away free will. Probably causes cancer. Places like that should be shut down and burned to the ground.

Consider yourself very lucky to be so close to good support.
I have my eye on one of their heavy duty scissor style knurlers.

I purchased it from Littlemachineshop who specializes in these little machines. They supply every little piece on them and they are only 45min away from me. So if something breaks I can get it replace pronto!

15 lbs! What I’d give for a lightweight like that. My 4 jaw is 10″ and about 40 lbs, I think. I have a 3/4″ plywood board that I lock into place (using the crossfeed carriage body) over the ways everytime I make a chuck change, just in case I drop the damn thing. Don’t wanna nick the ways… mine uses an L0 taper, I don’t have the bucks for a D6 camlock so the changes take time, have to spin a threaded locking collar on and off every time (6tpi I think). And yep, it’s a true PIA to set up something in a 4 jaw. Takes more time to set up something than to turn it usually. I’m looking for a 6 jaw Buck, L-zero back if anyone has one!

You can reverse the jaws to prevent that (sometimes).
I got a 4″ 4-jaw independent a while back. More accurate
than a self-centering job but kind of a PITA to set up.

Nice! I just put a 4″ 4 jaw on mine, much smoother with the extra mass 😀

hopefully that new chuck of yours will allow for better centering than the stock one (main reason I went to 4 jaw)

Bigger whole was the main purpose. But they can open quite a bit before they touch the bed. The lathe runs a lot smoother with the extra mass.

No shop safety courses here. 🙁 I have learned much through trial and error. But i am always on the cautious side!

Can you open the jaws wider than you could the smaller chuck? I would think the jaws bottoming out on the ways would be a problem. Unless you were just looking for a larger center hole?
