Q:

Accuracy question

I am new to the forum and fairly new to airgunning. I am retired and am currently managing an orchard/vineyard. When I started this orchard, I didn’t realized the sheer numbers of pests that want to add the fruit I grow to thier diet. Long story short, I bought a talon ss late last year to help control the pest problem. This year I installed a 24″ .22 cal. stock barrel. After reading through this forum, I must say that I have little air rifle expierence and would like some advice. When I used the AF rifle as a stock ss with the 12″ barrel I used mostly beeman ramjet and crosman premiers and was fairly happy with the results. Because some of the shots may be 50+ yds, I opted for the 24″ barrel. I have tried crosman premiers, RWS super H point and RWS superpoint extra. I can’t seem to get a consistant accuracy out of the new barrel. I am seeing slightly more than 1″ accuracy at 25 yds. This appears to be best with the power setting on 10 on the rifle. I will see two shots dead on and then two go wild, meaning unpredictable maybe left then maybe high right outside of the 1″ ctc. I may have two or three kills at 50 yds, then very unpredicably, I won’t be able to get close. Just today I experience 3 clean misses. Frustrated I shot at a board at 50 yds. and had 2 on center hits and two wild (one 2″ wide right and one 2″ high left). Any advice out there?

Knifemaker of Texas, did you have those kind of groups with your talon ss 18″ barrel prior to adding the Condor valve? Or did you add the valve just for a little more punch?

I’m with Adam! double Horse Shit!

These Guns SHOOT!!!

Just get rid of the pointed light pellet. They work just fine in very low powered guns. Not ours. You will find that JSB/s and The Kodiaks shoot well for just about all of us! The Crossmans are a favorite as well. But at a slightly lower velocity. The Kodiaks will work very well on the very edge of the speed of sound. So far, the JSB’s are doing very well as well. I’m having very good results with the Pred’s that I am testing. So far, So good. Now to the terrible accuracy in these Air Force Guns.

No Bench rest. Just a rolled up hat on the top of the car. High tech Huh? Slight gusting side wind. 50 Yards. JSB’s 18″ Bbl. in Talon SS, Condor valve.

Me or the gun? That’s a valid question. Thanks for the shooting tips zombieheadhunter. I will check them out further. No I had the 12″ barrel shooting great. I opted for the 24″ needing further range but I had problems immediately and just haven’t been able to work them out. Now I certainly have been aware of rushed shots after the wiley feathered quarry but I am ceratinly aware of that. When I bench the rifle and know that it is rock solid and still spray some shots with no pattern then I am sure the problem is within the tuning. Thanks to earlier advice, which I believe to be pretty sound, I probably am shooting a light pellet too hot. I will be following that advice and taking the power through stages to correct that problem. I’m sure if I can’t get the accuracy that I need with that, I will be looking for more advice. Meanwhile I will check out Adam’s tips.

Bingo!! That is why I have a bubble level and a cheek piece for the cheek weld on my tank. Took off my Morgan buttplate and the Wokbut will be my next Condor part if I stop buying patrs for me Jeep this month as Mama Bear had a look at my Visa. ๐Ÿ™„

If I may put a word in for Adam’s WOKbut piece, get it! That one item has helped me tremendously in acheieving a consistent weld against the tank.

Don’t expect to shoot these guns fast and accurately right out of the gate – you have to practice A LOT! A couple thousand rounds (at least)just to allow the gun to get acquainted with you.

Thanks Z2H ๐Ÿ˜ณ

And you are correct a cheek weld is very important. I use that foam pellet holder for that and it is key for consistent shooter accuracy

Be honest…Is it you or the gun? I have a feeling that no matter what gun you purchase, you may experience the same frustrations. Adam (Walk On King), has written a geat section on improving accuracy in the quick reference section:

Let me add that if you’re not doing it already, keep both eyes open while shooting. Follow through your shots. Doing this will immediately improve your groups.

Watch your cant at 50 yards, a slight tilt of the rifle at that distance can make you off by more than an inch. Get a dove tail bubble level to help you. While you’re at it, also check the alignment of the verticle reticle on your scope.

I can’t believe that no one has mentioned anything about cheek weld yet -these guns a bit different due to the tank not providing a nice consistent place to rest your face securely. Ideally your cheek should โ€˜weldโ€™ to the stock/tank in exactly the same place each time you bring the sights up. This isn’t easy, and requires practice.

ENGLISH SPARROWS = FREE MOVING TARGETS ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

And my cats love the results!!! One comes running every time I shoot my talon as he has learned that sound often = free lunch. 8)

Well I whack them once in awhile as they are not native (sparrows I am talking about) but man those 32 grain EJ’s really give them a good shove at 992 fps. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

My 15 year old son takes out English sparrows 70yds out with the Talon with no problem.

When you see people struggling with $2000 Rapids and Daystates trying to get the accuracy that some of these Talons and Condors make it puts a smile on my face.

And when I see some of the groups that are suppose to be good with the big bores I smile even larger when I compare them to what my Talon can do.

All three of my PCP’s have great accuracy. I don’t have use for airguns that are not accurate.

And lets keep in mind the only performance modification I have on my Talon SS is a simple valve modification and longer barrel and a shroud . It shot just as accurate before I did those changes.

You bet Adam these guns are great when dialed in you just can’t take it out of the box and expect it to be an all in one wonder gun that is cheap.

You might consider moving to another gun noted for its accuracy. I’m not casting stones at AF guns but they have focused a little more on power and affordability and not ultimate accuracy. You can make a Talon or Condor shoot a little more accurately, but if you need a gun that is a tack driver every time, this is not it.

Horse shit!

My Talon with 16″ barrel gets 2″ at 100yds. And my Talon SS with 12″ was getting .75″ at 70 yds.

My Talon 16″ barrel is everybit as accurate as my AA410

Yeah, you want to get a Beeman R7 if you want to hit the same hole every time, ie: a low powered springer (<10fpe) or a Match competition rifle. They are also pretty quiet and you can’t beat the Rekord trigger on an ‘R’ series.

But just like any gun, springer, PCP, CO2, etc. they can all be tuned or modified to be tack drivers. Most guns are not from the factory, but have great potential to be super-accurate when they are tuned properly. A trigger tune is probably the most important when it comes to accuracy.
