Advice on 30mm scope rings
So I finally got my scope back from repair after a year and need some rings for it. I have a edgun R3m and the Nikko is the 10-15×60, I was wondering what recommendations there would be for it. I think I have seen someone with that scope on an Edgun, but don’t remember who.

Everyone is different I suppose. For my experience when I go to dairy farms the ranges may be from 25 yards to 150 yards. I need to use a mil dot / ranging reticle for holdover. Spinning a turret would be totally impractical. Because of this fact a 30 to 50X second focal scope for the ranges I just stated is useless for holdover. Sure you can turn down the scope but why add all that weight and limitations to a gun when the top end magnification . Think about this, a Hawke sidewinder scope (1/2 mil) can holdover 150 yards at 20x and 214 at 10X. A SWFA Mil quad can holdover 167 yards. This may not be important to some shooters but for me it’s very important.

SWFA has it for $1290 and the midway price is so low because it’s five years old and they don’t carry them anymore…
Sure you “could” have save $100 and you “could” put this and that on it. The scope is fine for the rifle, you can always turn the mag down, on a 12x scope it ain’t going past 12x…
The ONLY issue with that scope is the warranty is hit and miss. There is a relatively good size market out there for used ones, field target or benchrest shooters are going to be the people you want to sell it to, they will understand the value and quality of the scope for what it is. I see them go used on the Yellow for up to $800, used a field target season or so. Depending on how hard up you are for $$ or a different scope (shit I have a 8-32x Leapers that you can use, it’s not great glass at 32x but at 24x it rocks) hold out for no less than $800 if it was really just pulled out of the box!
I’m a huge fan of quality magnification but the new Leupold will not focus down past 15 yards (may be more like 20 I don’t remember exactly), their custom shop will not change parallax settings (so it’s no good for field target), Sightron will not focus down past 11 at 50x unless you have their custom shop adjust the front objective. Currently other than perhaps the March (which is 3x the price) the Nikko is one of the go to field target scopes that works and you can still adjust (reparallax) fairly easily.
The glass on my old Nikko Gen I 10-50x is as good as the glass on my new Sightron 10-50x. I’ve heard the Nikko Gen II (green ring) has good glass but not as clear as the originals. I have not seen this claim with my own eyes, but that’s the ‘word’.

AoA is a little high. The real retail price for that scope is close to 1200 and it can be found for less. Honestly for that kind of money most shooters will step up to Leupold, Bushnell 6500, or a Vortex. Nikko scopes do not have a huge market in the USA. I would be surprised if it sold for more than 600 on ebay but you might get lucky and find the right FT or silhouette shooter that needs massive magnification. Try Yellow or ebay to sell it. If you use ebay I would allow international shipments these scopes seem to be more popular in England.

I should probably look into a different scope. I bought it 5-6 years ago when I first got into airguns and was never really educated in optics and still have a lot to learn. It appears to sell for more than I paid for it and was wondering what you guys think I could sell it for. Mine is brand new, just opened for inspection . I think AOA sells them for $1400. Then hopefully I can find a scope that will work with the gun better for me.
with the QD, everytime and take it off and put back on still hold zero, i totally recommend it.
Keyser I agree with you. After going Tru 3 sidewinder I thought there’s gotta be a better scope out there under a grand. Did some research and came up with a Swfa 3.15×42 with a mil.quad reticle. For 700 bucks I don’t think that you can any better. This is the best scope I’ve ever owned. Works like a dream on my 22 cal r3m.
I look at the gun and scope as a system both items should be compatible for the intended use of the gun. If you want to be super precise there is no doubt that a thin reticle 2nd focal plane is best. If you want quick calculations for holdover with out worrying about magnification then the first focal is better. Bullpups are like AR-15s, too big of an objective will give a horrible cheek weld and it will be too high off the bore axis. This will limit your adjustment for the turret. Most cheaper scopes are not up for the task on a fine PCP gun. Airguns like Edguns, crickets and the like are capable of extreme range (for an air rifle). Shooting 150 yards with a .22 Edgun is the equivalent of a 168 grn 308 BTHP shooting 975 yards. Choosing a scope that is capable of several feet of adjustment will add enjoyment to the gun. The hard part is to find an affordable scope capable of this kind of adjustment. Choosing a reticle is one of the most important tasks when picking your scope. I love the reticle found on the Hawke Sidewinder 30 (1/2 Mil) but the scope mechanics are not perfect. I would prefer a more positive click on the turrets. The scope does track well however. The 42 mm objective keeps the scope low and it also increases depth of field. The SWFA SS 3-15 is also a really good choice for the FFP option. I would choose a scope that has MRAD turrets. This will allow you to spin the knob less to get your desired elevation. Good luck with your search.
It’s pretty big, but it’s all I have right now. After seeing the price at AOA I have debated selling it, but not sure what I would get. Right now the scope is brand new and unmounted since they replaced the whole thing.
Honestly that scope is too big for the Edgun. I hold the opinion that a sub 50MM objective is better for a bullpup.
Nikko 10-50x- 36.5 MOA
Sightron 10-50x- 50.0 MOA
BSA 40x- 67.5 MOA
Leapers 8-32x- 76.5 MOA
The adjustable rings should get you where you need to go… I made a rail for my Ed with half the oem drop (0.25º instead of 0.5º) to solve my problem and then switched to a different scope.
You also shooting a different caliber which could make all the difference. 😉
When you put the rings together lift the front of the scope the minimum amount possible.
It is the 10-50×60 .The Burris rings have inserts for some adjustment, not sure how much. I should maybe think about this some more and cancel that order. I just wanted to get a scope on a gun , I haven’t had either in years. Just got the scope back after waiting since April for a replacement and before then Walt had all my stuff.

What exactly are you looking to do? I have the Leupold medium QR mounts and the way the scope is set the objective bell misses the rail because it sits in front of the end of the rail…
If you are looking to get rings high enough to miss the rail I can comment later when I can look at the rifle with the scope mounted further back on the rail.
With that particular scope you WILL need adjustable rings, there isn;t enough elevation to get you on target at 30 yards (at least on my 177 Ed there wasn’t). I have the Gen I Nikko (black turrets).
I believe the Nikko has only 60MOA, where the Sightron has 72MOA and the cheaper Leapers have 96MOA of vertical adjustment. My Sightron works but the Nikko does not.

I use the Burris signature rings on my R3M. FX makes a good adjustable ring set, but I haven’t seen it for weaver/picatinny rails.
