Q:

AGD and AGN "The Long Rangers" competition, My Taipan gets it done. 200 yards now 250.

I know many of you venture over to AGN every now and again but they are teamed up with AGD for their “The Long Rangers” competition where you have to hit a plastic golf ball supplied by Airgun Depot at 150 yards or more. I decided to poke my nose into that thread and began posting there. I couldn’t just talk the talk, I knew I had to walk the walk so I decided to finally attempt this challenge. And let me tell you, it isn’t easy.

I opted to go all out and hit the golf ball at 200 yards. I tried hard with JSB Kings 25.39 grain pellets but those crosswinds made mincemeat out of the lighter pellets out that far. What the wind is doing from where you’re taking your shot are not necessarily what’s happening near your target. So I jumped up to the 33.95gr JSB’s and the Taipan began to shine.

Anyway, here is my video of hitting the GB @ 202 yards…

Looks like I won’t be able to go past 222 yards as I’ll run out of mildots. Here is where I ended up with Strelok Pro when I took my 202 yard shot. Notice above that the elevation turret is maxed out at 13 mils or 130 clicks and I still had to use 5 1/2 mildot holdover and an holdover for wind. This is with built in 20moa rail in my Taipan Veteran. I could guesstimate holdover just a bit but doubt I’ll get out to 230 yards without new adjustable rings. I think I’ll be taking a seat on this one. 202 is good enough for me.

I had to fudge with my ballistic co-efficient out that far in strelok to get this to be accurate to the shot I took. The parameters I fed Strelok at first had me way off at 200 yards. I’m glad I did this challenge though as it’s given me data to feed into Strelok Pro to be more accurate at all ranges. Wind was higher than what my pic below shows as I had turned my windage turrets some and then accounted for wind on the fly with holdover beside the windage clicks. I estimate the wind to have been at 6-7 mph when I took the shot. Wind came in about the 10 o’clock position.

This was great stuff man! The heat like that really adds to the effort as well. Sure shows that the Tiapan is a serious rifle.
Now as mentioned it would be really helpful if you had a nice clean pile of dirt and-or Sand and setup and shoot at the g-ball there so you can profile the shots.

Then if the wind was nice and more consistent or not at all, you could throw down on more than one g-ball.

I am betting the big 33+gr. pellet really knocks the heck out f the g-ball 🙂 I must admit, never shot a
g-ball. Have more than a few around here too. I collect them when I find a lost one, have every intention to build me a small salute Cannon that will fire those, as the g-ball has always to me looked like the perfect projectile ammo for one and use something like the full length brass 12-8 guage shotshell case for the charge.
That will be a project later on when things are not roaring around here as they have been. Just now getting back in the full swing of things since the surgery on my neck.
Shooting at the g-ball does look & sound like fun as well. 200 yards at a g-ball is no laughing matter with an air rifle either. Sounds like a “have to do” challenge to me! Now I will say it sounds amazing at 200yards, and I will have to go out on a fence row or somewhere to get that sort of distance, but heck even a hundred yards would be fun as well, especially with the wind to factor in.

LOL, do not worry about Hoot , He is in such big demand with the hot air balloon club , Not sure he even post on the air gun sites.
Yea Hoot had so much Hot air he flew a balloon around the world in two days , Well it was a small balloon from dollar general store , About eight inches , But he did get a trophy hanging in the store, HOT LIPS HOOT,

Whoopsiedaisers, soccer balls are comprised of little pentagonal patches.

As far as my hat, or lack thereof, I had it in the truck but I honestly expected to be in and out of there in less than an hour. LOL! My hat I brought looked like an over-sized fishing hat. I didn’t want to throw it on for the video so HOOT :hoot: would have some sort of ammo to use against me!

If I had just used the 33.95 gr I would have been out of there in a hurry as I would have got it done right away after sight in. Damned wind. Surprisingly I didn’t get sunburned but that’s probably becuase I did 3 weekends previous and had some peeling skin bigger than patches of hexagons that comprise a soccer ball. I should have made a Bizillball sewn out of my own skin. “It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.”

Good shooting, Video came through like a charm.
Where the hell is your hat? Helps in the heat .
I sure hope you win the Impact, Free impact, You dump 800 to 1000 bucks in that Impact gun and you can be shooting right there with Ted,
Where you at? Looks almost like West Texas except your a little to green there,
I understand dressing in white in the heat, Makes a big difference .

Southern Arizona. Holy hell the antelope jackrabbits are HUGE out here. Never see them come into the city but they are abundant on the outskirts! Might have to go hunting in jackrabbit season. Never have before.

I wanted to do multiple camera angles but it was too hot and I had no spotters or help. I was a lone ranger and had to do everything myself. Couldn’t get her done with 25.39 as the wind kept getting me off target. Wind was supposed to be 2mph but it was all over the place. I was about to give up but finally busted out my new pack of 33.95 gr JSB’s and sighted her in with that. Hit record on the phone and got my 2nd shot hit. I used a cell phone to record in the end as my big camera would NOT focus in through the range finder and the rules are to do one continuous video and the rangefinder was more important to me than getting multiple angles I’d have to edit later.

I wouldn’t mine winning a drawing for the Impact, but my Taipan is my go-to girl and I feel always will be.

Hey Bill,
Great video and I understand you not mentioning that you bought your rifle from TalonTunes.
That would be a damn shame to do all that work and excellent shooting only to have your video
deleted because you said where you bought it from….
SAD BUT TRUE.

Yessir, but it’s not disrespectful to add a link to my purchase on my youtube vid so I did.

Don’t let that video fool you. I was out for hours messing around in the wind with 25.39 JSB’s. That wind just makes or breaks you. I can’t tell you how many takes I did having to fix this or that or other problems like stepping on a piece of cholla cactus wearing my flip flops. So many times I re-watched my fail videos and found myself saying I should just step up to the JSB heavies 33.95 grain. Lo and behold I finally do and BAAM. That poor ball didn’t stand a chance!

Yeah, I want to be entered into a drawing but by the end of August there will be so many entries that my chances of winning will diminish entirely I believe. What I did want to do is show off the Taipan to potential owners.

In the end I did NOT have fun doing this challenge. If I had had help or something or a spotter or even a spotting scope, it would have helped immensely. Going at it alone and not having enough zoom sucked. I should have found a dirt bank to shoot at because the misses would have been easier to spot. I was shooting level off a golf tee so when I hit low, I had no idea if I hit low behind the ball, just below or even 3 feet in front of it. This was all trial and error. But when I finally got my bearings and used the heavies, things worked to my favor, as you can tell by the video.

I thought I’d just go in and pimp this shit out in a few shots. Heck no. That is, not until I let go my stubbornness to only use the 25.39 grain and stepped up to the big boys. Yes, it does make that much difference, which I knew but for whatever reason wanted to use the lighter ones. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

I see some got her done with a .22 but that takes many shots. MANY shots. The wind blows my 25.39 jsbs like a bitch slap so I can only imagine what it does to a lighter .22, even if they use heavier .22’s.

Way to go Bill!
You nailed it second shot and you did seem quite happy.
Congratulations my man, you did it ….Good luck in the drawing.

Tony, I gotta say I wanted to mention TalonTunes in my vid but you know how they’d whine over at AGN. Plus with AGD being the competition, albeit not for the Tiapan, I felt it’d be disrespectful to mention their competition when I’m trying to win something from them. But hopefully potential buyers will do their research and buy from you. Who else sells them besides you and R&L?

I had also put on your black Talon Tunes t-shirt but guess what, knew I’d be out in the sun for hours and that wasn’t gonna fly. I decided to change my shirt for a white one before I left the house!

Are you using Firefox for your web browser? Youtube vids get fucked for me now and again but only on FF, but I like FF the best so sometimes I have to “refresh” FF or just uninstall it from my computer and then reinstall. Flash, HTML5 and all that bullshit, it all is a mystery to me.

Anyway, they are plastic golf balls filled supposedly with talcum powder. You can usually see the plume of powder fly out when you hit it, not explosive tough like Tannerite. It isn’t easy hittin’ shit out at 200 yards with wind. One second I have like 4mph steady flow, miss a shot, then cycle my pellet and now the wind’s changed direction or velocity and your holdover is off. That was with 25.39gr. Not the Taipan’s fault, it’s just physics.

But stepping up to the 33.95 and the wind becomes less of a bother, though a 10mph gust will still screw with you pretty hardcore. I actually found shooting the vids a real pain and when I hit the ball, I didn’t get overly excited as all I wanted to do was go home and swim. If you get to watch any of the other peoples’ vids you’ll see most of them aren’t all too happy either, pretty much due to hot weather! If they did this challenge in the winter, I’d be happier but then most others would have to deal with frozen trigger fingers. Once again we’re fucked by geographical location.

Oh yeah, I guess I should mention if you hit a golf ball on video and follow their rules then you’re placed into a drawing for an FX Impact. Otherwise I would not have attempted catching this on video. It’s too much work. No enjoyment like you’d have if you were simply out plinking. Making videos sucks donkey balls.

Yea , I go over to AGN looking for some people and reading post,
But I can not post on the site, I was kicked off because Michael thought I was a Mutant dealer.
I could not see your video, I am sure its my computer, Got some problems with it,
I been shooting marbles at 38 and 48 yards, Most of them are gone, I mean gone,
I wonder do The golf balls sometimes just take off, Maybe a little bigger and you can find them?
Marbles , I think go to some strange marble place.
