Air rifle twist rates
Just received my latest edition of Shotgun News ! Inside is an article on Air Rifle Twist Rates by Tom Gaylord. very interesting and informative. I have posted the lead page, I would scan the entire article for the forum enjoyment but scanner is to small.
This is from my phone, if anyone is interested I will post the rest of the article if you don’t have the mag.

So far NOT impressed with the BEnchmark barrel at all. I have one more thing to try tomorrow but if I had to make a decision right now it’s send it back for a refund.
The slow twist LW barrel on the other hand is wicked accurate so far. I only have 45 yards indoor and it’s producing some sweet groups with pellets that my other LW barrel didn’t like. At 30 yards I could one hole five shot groups. ๐ฎ
Woo-Hoo! Let the Games commence! :8:

Oh yeahโฆ
The barrels arrived today!!!
Will be doing some accuracy testing this weekend… :ugeekn:
Looking forward to it Syn!
Yep, I was one of the beta testers for Jerry, and couldn’t get the .22’s to shoot well at all. A shame. They are good looking little critters!

Just so you know, it was not the “rebar” shape that didn’t work in .22, it was the final slug. Sounds a little precious BS? Yup, it isn’t. We had one beta tester that had awesome results and was nailing dimes at 50 (claimed) but I and none of my other testers could replicate the results more than sporadically. The problem, I surmised, was that we just could not make the tiny castings consistently enough to offer 10’s of thousands to people who want what they paid for vice excuses. We just could not get past the honest excuses and thus could not offer the .22s for general sale.
Right now, there is no low dollar method that supports sustained production of these castings for a low volume market. I have a couple ides and if one works….
Sorry Jerry, didn’t mean to imply or oversimplify anything, I wasn’t sure what exactly was the reason, just knew the 22 cal product’s performance wasn’t up to your standards! It was more of an example about how one thing make work for one caliber and not the other, or work for powder burners and not airguns. :winkn:
KM, don’t have the barrels back yet, hopefully soon!!! ๐
Haha knife you crack me up man. They need to put a reg on these though is what they need to do
๐ No way in hell will AF do it. Not unless they can rip if off the TAG after it’s already been done. But Before they do, they will run us down for a couple of years for doing it first. Seems they have to put down any real idea well in advance of caliming they were the first to do it. ๐
Lets see, they did it with the streatched frame that RC and Doug came up with.
The .25 Condor that we pionered here on the tag.
The Hammer slap mod Tony developed.
Inserts for the frame that sub-sonic came up with.
The Wok Butt,
Should I go on? ๐ ๐
The next thing you know, they will strengthen the breach area that they buchered. Wonder if they will rip Doug off again, or just quit screwing up the milling operation in the first place?

Knife, draw something up! Af needs you on their R&D team
Syn, If you read the Cast Boolit forum, (Yes, that is how they spell it LOL!), you will see that many have tried to cast in .223-224 with few doing it justice. Seems the small dia. doesnt’ want to fill out well and give good consistent weights.
The .257 takes a bit of finess as well. ๐ I don’t EVEN want to try casting the .22’s any time soon. but you know me. I probably will eventually!
I’ve been saying that a .22 bullet in a powder burner bbl. should do just fine. but was told here on the TAG years ago that in NO WAY would it work. When I voiced my thoughts, I was either ignored with no responses to it, or was told NO, IT WILL NOT WORK!!! Well, We’re doing it with the .257 Bullets just fine thank you! And the Drummen Sinner is makeing big waves across the pond in AG BenchRest Matches. Yep, In .223 and .303. wouldn’t you know it! After they said it couldn’t be done. ๐ ๐
What’s bad about being ahead of your time, is that every one forgets you when you prove your Ideas valid! ๐ฅ Buuuuut, guess who’s laughing now!
I also said years ago that we should build a wooden stock to stiffen our frames. Nope, won’t work they said. Well, a few tried it. Damed if it didn’t work!
Now I want to use a 4500 psi bottle reg’d down to 3100 for shooting cast. Nope, Won’t work! Buuuut, Just a couple of weeks ago, some one here who knows how make a good reg. thought abut it and said Hummm! Next move, put the bottle under the barrel hanging from the frame and shorten up the stock to make it a BULL PUP! Hummm!!!, Or have a second bottle in the rear just as it is now but with a reg, with the bottle in the fromt feedingit as well. Oh Hell Yes!!!. Now we have a REAL platform in the AF configuration for Big Boer with more shots on tap than any other big bore on the market.

chirp-chirp-Chirp-Bump! Syn, any results???
google R&L airguns ๐
Is there a link to RJ’s site for cast bullets ?
Have you tested them for accuracy ?
Just received my 257 barrel from Randy at RL Air Gun Supply. Very pleased with the delivery and the very fine machine work.
He has been in a middle of a move, he was going to blue the barrel but he needed to get his tanks set back up. I told him no big deal because I will cerakote the barrel anyway.
It came ready to drop in with bushings and end cap. Installed in the gun in about 5 minutes. Dropped in a 25 cal Eun jin 43.2 grn pellet and sent it down range.
Right through a 2 x 4 , seems to be very accurate. I was putting pellets through the same hole with paper targets at 20 yards. That’s as far as I can shoot in my building down a corridor.
Next going to order some cast bullets from RJ and head to the range with chrony. Randy doesn’t mention on his site if this is a barrel liner or not but I am sure it is a TJ’s liner.
It’s the barrel that Mac-1 supplies for FT and Benchrest competitionโฆ
I believe BM made a 25 cal stainless steel barrel, not sure of the OD though. For the rifle I use I only need the first 5″ cut to around 16mm to fit in the barrel block.
I’ve also heard that RAW is going to be using the BM barrels on some of their benchrest builds, not sure if it’s 22 or 25 though.
If you search for 25 Benchmark barrels you will find old posts on another forum, the owner of BM was supposed to retain the blank so they could build more. It is most likely made to Diabolo pellet dimensions instead of a slug dimensions. ๐ ๐ ๐
I do believe though that they will do limited runs of custom barrelsโฆ If they are anything like the 22 two groove they will be some of the best slug barrels made. ๐ฏ ๐
thing is with PB projectiles they predominately travel over 1100fps for the majority of their flight. AG ballistic are typically under 1100fps for the majority of their flight. Look around TAG here for information about Surefire Slugs (aka Jerry’s slugs), they were essentially a 25 cal slug of rebar section but flew straight and grouped very well. Granted the shape didn’t work in 22cal but it was awesome in 25. They basically looked like this> [=I=I=]…
My barrels arrived in LA this morning. I sent all three of my USFT barells down for customization (LW 1:18 24″, LW 1:36 24″ & HW 1:18 19″) to Mac-1, he is going to include a new BM 22 barrel (should be arriving via UPS this week) when he sends the lot back up with a few extra parts.

A shame on the bench mark. I would have thought it would have done better. ๐
Your slow twist was really slow twist wasn’t it? I can’t remember just how slow. Way over 30/1 wasn’t it?
Man old memory sucks! ๐ณ ๐
