Q:

Air rifle twist rates

Just received my latest edition of Shotgun News ! Inside is an article on Air Rifle Twist Rates by Tom Gaylord. very interesting and informative. I have posted the lead page, I would scan the entire article for the forum enjoyment but scanner is to small.
This is from my phone, if anyone is interested I will post the rest of the article if you don’t have the mag.

I just received a custom twist 177 LW barrel. It’s 1 in 36″ and I will be testing it out here in a few weeks indoors.

I will also be testing a Benchmark 22 caliber two groove barrel indoors as well.

I found my stock LW barrel doing the spiraling thing with the JSB heavies (177/10.34 grains) as well as the CPH 10.5 grain pellets. Hopefully the custom twist will improve accuracy and it that doesn’t the BEnchmark barrel is supposed to be AWESOMELY accurate!

Benchmark, I asked them to provide a blank .243 27″ barrel in the OD of .625.
Chris emailed back and said sorry can’t help you with that one. What was the time frame for barrel and why did you choose the 2c barrel .

For some reason last year I got the idea that I wanted to build a .243 or 6 mm Condor. There seems to be a decent selection of molds in that caliber.
Also wanted to experiment with a long bullet with a ballistic tip so as to improve the BC. David Tubbs has been quite successful with his 6mm .
I thought I would get a hollow point type mold made and then fit the cavity with a ballistic tip. I maybe wrong for trying, but I know I will have fun doing it.
So twist rate for a 243/6mm 80-100 grain, hmmm good question ? Also something else to consider is rifling for a 6mm 80-100 grain air rifle.

Just need to find the plastic tips
Here are some links to some interesting stuff.

Corbin also has the die’s to swage lead bullets from lead wire in a 243

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and results on those two bbl’s.!

Tof, I’ve got a batch of the 60 gr. NOE’s ready to ship your way. Looking forward to hearing how they do in your more powerful gun. Seems your getting a bit more FPS for a given weight than what my gun is capable of. 😥

I should have a replacement valve here from Doug this week, and more testing will be done. It’s a tough job, but yada-yada-yada- Sucks to be us! 😀

Mike,

Good talk we had today.

Hope to see that mold from NOE soon. This should be good for us. Lighter means faster and hopefully while using BULLETS, thing should improve even more. More speed, then more spin on that bullet while using our current twist rates.

Tof? Tof? Tof? did Tof fall of the west coast again? 😥

Cedric, even if you don’t get mentioned every time, don’t worry, we ( I, anyway…lol ) remember. There is a whole host of stuff I don’t have to go out and learn for myself. Get a proper barrel. Remember twist rate when selecting a boolit. Make enough power. I am taking it up in .22 cal…there seems to be less issue with getting a BR to score a 22 cal for one. Heavyweight, unlimited class for sure…:)

Cedric, I recall you testing HP and your MHP boolits and labeling the testing as ‘unscientific’. Un-rigorous maybe, unscientific, no…do please carry on.
cheers,
Douglas

Oh Shit! Sorry Tof! (Now quite disapearing on us!) Thought you had fallen off the West Coast. 😯

Ok Guys, Last but very much NOT LAST, Our recentely elusive, reclusive, “Master. .257 Blaster” CEDRIC!!! 😀 :8: :6:

Too Much? 😆

Thanx MAW, Ihr der Mann 😆 😆

Tofazfou,

Wir wissen dass Du bist der Ingineur von die “TD257”, und wir beHlten dich im grosse

WOW MIKE, SO OLE CED GETS NO CREDIT IN ANY OF THAT 257 stuff? Remember the original videos of the TD257? You know, TOFAZFOU!? LOL!

Damn, I stop making videos for a couple months and BOOM, I’m not important anymore nor did I shoot the 1st quarter mile soda can shot.

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG how quickly we forget…………..loL! :3: :3: :3: LOL!

Roach Creek has been doing the same kind of testing with the .257 Bullets that our Dyotat100 .257s shoot. He is finding better stability in the heavier, longer bullets with the 1-10 twist, where the 84grain and under seem to work better in the 1-14 twist bbls.

I have milled down a lyman 257420 mould to get a 54 grain bullet and testing it in the 1-14 barrel with good results so far.

Tedd=OldGoat is doing the same.

On a side note, NOE Bullet mould company is thinking about making moulds just for us AirGun Bullet junkies. This Bullets in AirGuns thing is getting bigger and bigger.

I have been looking at the possibilities of using bullets in PB barrels on AirGuns for years now. And thanks to the efforts of Doug=Dyotat, Cedric=Tofazfou, Ted=OldGoat, and Charlie=RoachCreek, I am doing a lot of testing, and pushing the envelope off lighter than off the shelf bullets and am very optimistic with the results so far! 😀

I know what you mean, I tend to do the same thing. First it’s my AR15’s then my 308 AR and now air rifles.

Ain’t that the truth !!

Thanks. I never though I would get this involved in this. It’s almost like it has turned into an obsession with the the AF platform to make it shoot good and shoot hard.

I’m getting closer to firing my .308 1-14 4 groove that I had made. Still need to finish the breech and need my valves to be finish at the machine shop. There’s just not enough days in a week for me.

I had several request to read the article so here it is- BTW I recommend going to shotgunnews.com and subscribing, so we can help support articles like these.
Also the work that Dyotat100 (Doug) has done in the area of tuning Airforce Rifles and his interest in custom barrels is what peaked my interest in this article.

Sorry for the quality, I dont have a large enough scanner and my 3 year year old droid has a problem with low light.
