Airforce Piccanty rail modification…
thought I would field this one past the fine folks here…
Hate the stock set up on the AF rifles. Building a sidecocker 9mm and plan on removing the carry handle nonsence and fitting it up with a full length 1913 Piccanty rail. Picked up a 32″ 1913 extrusion but would like to hear some ideas on permenently installing it.
leaning towards after cutting the handle off having the existing rail milled rectangular witha matching mortice cut on the underside of the 1913 rail.
At the front the new 1913 rail will be secured to the tube with a series of screws with two more screws at the rear then finally TIG welded along the seam and fiinish machined prior to bead blast and Ceramic coating.
Does this sound like a good route on this?
Have a Swan Sleeve with the pop up rear and a Troy Arms folding front sight that will be going on this rig which will also allow use of my throw lever ARMS optics bases. Site plane will be perfect as I am using one of Marmot Militias drooped ETACS with a 68ci JDS bottle

Been a number of Silent mortars developed usng the spigot and captive piston design as well.
my proposal is a bit different as the shaft of the bolt becomes a primary expansion chamber until finally the venturi allows a metered release of the compressed air blast

yeah power would be somewhat reduced but I dont think by a great deal due to the use of a sliding captive venturi versus the captive piston.
You are referring to the S&W QSPR
was built on a M29 but the roots were the WWII OSS silent 12 gauge round which used a “telescoping” case. Neither had much power, were designed for tunnel rat work.
In the 80s HK developed a multi barrel underwater pistol on the same principles
Current leaders are the Russians who have produced a full line of silenced weapons that grew out of their captive piston cartridge assassination pistol. Current rigs offer near silence, select fire and land or underwater deployability firing large fletchettes
radical crap of reasonable power. Here are a couple of there older systems from the 70s, there are much more sophisticated crap now.

are you familiar with the Bigot conversion set up for the 1911?
was a spigot launcher like TDs rig but used a captured piston inside the bolt with a primer and propelling charge behind it. Firing rod was inside the spigot which transferred the hammer strike to the piston which had a firing pin on the back side to detonate primer and propelling charge. The piston then drove down the internal shaft of the bolt driving the bolt off the spigot with the piston captured by a ring at the base thus making the system utterly silent in operation. Was old school spook hardware from the early 70s.
Now picture a bolt with instead of a piston, a sliding venturi. The spigot barrel would incorporate a small nozzle that would pass thru the venturi neck to deliver the HPA blast into a small expansion chamber behind the sliding venturi. Same principle, compressed air expands against sliding venturi which drives bolt off spigot and should reduce the bang to a pop & whoosh signature
take some real careful design tho
similarly fletching may be able to be eliminated for mass stabilization techniques once you get into higher velocity ranges

I have one of his conversions but TD and I are working together to see if we can adapt the system to one of my Blodknob Big Bore valves which will likely need a different barrel and maybe breech.
The air flow on the big bore valves is far more than even a modded condor valve, enough so that I am reasonably certain it should blast bolts well in excess of 500 FPS which would likely make it the most lethal AF rifle ever built…{hoping for close to 600 FPS}
Yeah, expensive to feed but have a barrel full of throw away arrows I have accumulated over the years that I use as raw stock for building bolts for my Commando self cocker and Swiss Wacker target Xbows.
Friends & family donate alot as well as scrounge them at yard sales and such for me.
Had a Swivel Tool & Machine Airrow for awhile, wasnt overly impressed. TD’s rig is top notch in my book

I love that Airarcher, but it is expensive to feed. I had a dozen arrow made up from 2413’s, and it eats them.
I find that it is so damn accurate that I keep hitting my arrows. The aluminum arrows can’t take that kind of abuse. Yesterday I shot a 1.5 inch group off hand at 25 yards, I hit another arrow and ruined it.
Also I am always shooting too far, 60 plus yards and if I miss my little target, usually because the wind gets them, they bury themselves so deeply in the sod they disappear.
I have been writing down the location of the lost arrows, once it gets to the point that it will pay to rent a metal detector, I will go after them.
Next time I will take Tagdagger advice and get the cdarbon x cutters, they were not available here so I bought the 2413’s. I believe they are light years ahead in the durability department.
With my limited experience with the Air Force rifle, I have had it only since October, the Air archer seems to be the best assesory you can buy. However I have not tried the 25 yet, so I still ahve a lot of fun ahead for me.

another very slick point that occured to me this morning is that building ones own frame tube allows for the elimination of the alignment shims on the ETAC!
just plot the points with the ETAC w/o shims & tank installed in the tank collar
Also looks as tho I will build a tube for my Air Archer conversion. That as well requires no windows for power wheel, in fact really it doesnt even need a breech opening, just a side cocking slot. Basically just cut tube to length, fit with rail, cut a pair of slots and some screw holes…pretty easy job that!

I used to love getting those old orphan children up and shooting again. But these days I would rather buy air rifles, which I neglected for 50 years and airline tickets.

Yes that must be a stunning peice.
My last custom gun was a 78 sharps that started life as a military rifle, some past owner drilled the barrel twice thru the old reliable stamp.
So I had Phil and Marlyn make a pistol grip stock and a foreend and checker it, then had the reciever contoured to the shape of the sporting rifle, but without the insert cutouts. I had George Sherwood engrave the action and last barrel was a Krieger 30 inch 45/100.
I had Doug Turnbull do the blueing and case coloring on it. Then I had a MVA 6 power 7/8 ” 23 inch scope in a sliding mount put on it with quick detachable bases that MVA sold me with the scope.
With 550 grain bullets and 93 grains of Swiss 2f it would cloverleaf the first three shots of a 10 shot group at 200 yards from a standing cross sticks.
Ten shots would go into 2 to 3 inches at that range. Groups always widen with the ten shots due to the powder fouling.
That is the gun I gave to my son when he got back from Iraq for his service.
Lovely gun, I shot a lot of 1000 yard matches at Burns with it and an elk and a deer or two.
George Sherwood and Phil Fisher are dead now, so it is not like there will never be another one like it
