Anyone here like the AK-47 or AK-74?
The AK-47 is actually illegal here in CT, but I wanted to hear your thoughts on these types of rifles.

Saiga shotgun with drum mag for home defense then? Best of both worlds? Plenty ammo, looks mean and won’t ‘over’ penetrate or kill the guy 20 houses down??
It was never intended to be a target gun. It is extremely reliable. It accepts 5, 10, 30, 75 round magazines and empties them all without a hitch. Their chrome plated bores and chambers withstand years of abuse.
During the L.A. riots of 1992, I realized the necessity for one of these weapons. A 75 round drum is the best way I can think of to greet a large group of crazy people. If you were ever faced with hundreds of people trying to burn down your house/business, or beat you to death, you would appreciate the AK 47, or any of iits variants. It also has that sinister profile that says go away like a german shepard. I think the AK is a great weapon. I also acknowledge that my AA S410 is more accurate. 😀
The Saiga shotgun is an awesome weapon especially when fed with a drum magazine. There are youtube videos of it in action.
Online yeah? I read about all kinds of people getting under .25moa groups from their remington 770. 😆 😛
The AK is a spectacular human killer. That is what it was really made for. But that is mostly wartime stuff, where no one pays much attention to where that bullet goes after it hits the person, much less after spraying 30 rounds in the general direction of people.
As was said, it isn’t much of a home defense gun. Too much risk of over penetration. You could probably find frangible ammo or something of the sort, but it is like making a big truck into a super fast machine.
It is possible, but there are just better tools for the job. 😉

My wife works just 1/2 mile away from the shooting… I’m glad nobody else was hurt.
AK’s are built like a tank. The SKS is as well. Human torso accuracy to 120 yards with both of mine, but much past that is a crap shoot.
I keep the SKS as one of a few I have scattered about the house for home defense, but as stated, depending on your location…it may not be ideal.
They are fun, near indestructible guns that are relatively cheap to feed.
My dad has the AK-74. Shoots great, ammo is cheap and I can hit a head sized target out passed 100 yards standing all day long. Thats scoped, I could probably do it open sights back in the day.
Check out the Saiga 12. 12g shotgun built on the AK frame. Throw a 20 round drum in there full of buckshot and you could take out a whole home invasion crew. The mess will be big though.

I’ve trained with and am very familiar with them but still wouldnt pick a carbine/rifle as my first choice for home defence (unless I lived in the country).
Rather have a shotgun, wont kill the people a few blocks away.
The reason why I made this thread is that I was of a similar mind to you, Lama, but I read a lot that people use them for home defense.
Range toys.
In my book it is similar to most fully automatic guns, a big .50bmg, etc. They really aren’t good for much, you can’t do anything with them but take it to the range and shoot.
But man is it fun to take to the range and shoot. 🙂
They aren’t accurate. You probably can’t consistently hit a man-size target out past 100 yards. Maybe 200 if you get an accurate one. From personal experience with a friend’s 47, don’t bother reloading, just buy in bulk. His ejector is extremely strong, and it puts big dents in the side of his brass every time it kicks one out. (not to mention kicks it 20 feet out, good luck finding it :lol:)
But they are a lot of fun. Put a target at 25 yards and just hipfire the thing. Plus bulk ammo is cheap and plentiful most of the time.
Oh, and as I’m sure you know, it won’t break, ever. So clean it when you want to, but if you forget, no biggie. 😉
So if you want something to take to the range and play with, it’s a great one. If you are looking for something functional, it’s probably not the best.

Owned both, ak47 digested probably over 5000 rounds whithout a hitch. Ar15 would heat up after 500 rounds and have feed problems. AK47 is indistructable! target rifle hell no! good enoughthat I would not want to be the target at 150 yards yup! may take two or three shots but you will get shot! Easy to strip and clean functions in all conditions.
