Q:

Bad Pellet Flight

Need some opinions and help on bad pellet flight. Yesterday before the breeze picked up I was 5 for 5 on Grackles at my neighbors 85yd tree. Every seemed great. I was also shooting my new shroud and LDC from Donny. I was wanting to do a sound comparison between the old and the new so I removed the new shot a single unshrouded, yup loud 😯 . Then shot a couple with my old, not much difference according to my phone app so I abandoned the test. Anyway, I think to unload a chambered pellet I shot it into the open sky in a safe direction and noticed the pellet appearing to be cork screwing, kind of looked like one of those sidewinder missles beining launched. Shot a couple more same flight. Switched to some Kings same there also. Was shooting Benjamin domes. Since then I’ve tried the factory shroud, unlubed pellets of both Kings and Domes and still seeing bad flight. Speed of the Kings are 925 -930 and the Domes right at 895. I’ve check the crown which looks good, checked to make sure the breech O-ring is still there. Cleaned the barrel as well.

When I first got Donny’s shroud and lDC it did take a lot of effort and twisting to get in down on the barrel. I was wondering is maybe the barrel might could have be moved from that.

I should also add that the wind has been blowing at least 10-15 so I haven’t had a good chance to shoot it for groups. I did shoot it some yesterday evening at 60yds and was not getting very good results but there was still a little breeze going.

I had my scope focused at about 70-80yds so that is where I could see the bad flight.

Question, can cross wind cause bad pellet flight other than drift? Could it be an optical illusion. Nope, not too many beers….Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cock 😆 cork screwing. Lovely English…one letter and different sense 😆

quote GKU:

One also needs to use the right terminology.

Wobbling usually refer to the head of the pellet going straight and the shirt is rotating off it’s axis, like how a top starts of and then stabilizes.
Usually caused by a bad pellet or tin of.

Cock screwing or spiraling refer to a helical path, like a DNA molecule.
Usually cause by to large of a pellet head size for the barrel/chock used and SOME also say a wrong velocity match for the barrel /chock.

Cock screwing? Are you sure you are on the right forum Greg? 🙂

Jokes aside, interesting distinction. I understand the spiral path one. How does the path look for wobbling then?

Are you sure that you see pellet wobbling? It may be just an illusion. HS camera can tell you the truth.

I was told by Ernest, after his polishing, to clean the barrel with regular .22 gun cleaning kit – rod with a swab using Hopps. I then use dry patches until its clean and dry.

How are you cleaning the barrel, what kind of cleaning system are you using ?

Pellets usually wobble out of the muzzle out to about 30 yards after which it should stabilize out to your max shooting/hunting range.
If not it could be not the right pellet head size for your barrel/chock, every barrel/choke is slightly different.

Here’s a interesting video that WingMan made awhile back.

Thanks for the video link GKU. I always use a pull through bore saver with WD40 or balistol on the first couple of patches and then switch to dry for the last two or three. Every since Ernest polished the barrel it cleans a lot easier. Some of what I’m seeing may be the sunlight reflecting off of the pellet. Maybe…

Sounds like a case of Red Stag… Try sliding Donny’s shroud forward a 1/8″ and lightly tighten set screw and see what happens.
