Q:

Battle of the Bullpups USA Edgun -vs- Cricket, 80 yards

I got inspired by the other Battle of the Bullpups thread by Wingman and the fella Today who sold his Talon and asking what to buy. So here is my rookie Spoof of Wing’s thread. :biggrinn: Well having played with the cricket all week I was feeling it would shoot right with my Edgun and not having any real good opinion of how to respond to the question of what to buy, I thought I’d get off my arse and go shoot some paper today. I went over to the factory to set up my impromptu indoor 80 yard range for some dueling .22 airguns action. I took the .22 Edgun short version and my newly aquired .22 Cricket Compact ” Shanu’s Gun ” . I tried to keep everything fair and equal as possible. Both guns were shot out of the same tin of Edgun/JSB .22 18.1 grain pellets received from Tony. I know there are better results out there from other shooters but these are good for me on this day !!

Here is the range, you can barely see the target in my camera phone quality pictures. It is sitting on a 15″ cube wood box at the other end on the floor, below and left of that white sign on the railing of the shelf.

Edit: The groups are, the Cricket was 1.100″ ctc and 1.000 ctc, the Edgun was 1.100 ctc and .950 ctc throwing out that one oops.

I know my Edgun best so I started out with it and shot this target straight out of the guncase with no sighters !! 80 yards. I will defend the gun on that one shot that is the furtherest out on the left group as it was my second shot and most definitely me I knew it when i let it go, man that pisses you off when you are trying for groups but not enough to hoof it down there and change targets !!. These targets bullseyes are 1.5″ and this is 2 separate 10 shot groups on each target. Also the Edgun target was shot as it is pictured but I had it upside down when I wrote on it, my bad.

Here is the Cricket. I first shot it about 20 rounds and was getting less than stellar results but felt it was the scope giving the disadvantage, or better said my ability to do well with that scope, so those targets are not pictured here. I changed over to the same type of scope that my Edgun 22 short wears, a Hawke 6-24×56 and shot this target after a half a dozen sighters. The Cricket sure had a lot more time on the bench today so that helped it a bit I feel. Once again this is 2 seperate 10 shot groups on the same target. The one stray shot way low was not part of the consecutively shot 2, 10 rounds groups. It was gonna be the first shot but I need a few more clicks in the scope to get started, the next shot was close enough so I started there.

I am of the opinion both guns are equal and I will stretch this exorcise out to 100 yards next time and see if a significant difference shows up but for now I am happy with both.

To the fella who sold his talon, Sorry, not much help here, all I can say and few will argue I would think ?? Machining and Stock work on the Ed seems a bit nicer to me, Cricket’s multishot and the overall feel and handling is just a little nicer for a guy like me with size 13 ring finger type hands. Although I have never had a parts issue with my Edguns, some have, and this advantage falls to Cricket I suppose. Air consumption is the Edguns advantage as the cricket is a bit of an airhog in comparison. There is a big cricket order on it’s way so that in it’s self may be the biggest factor.

Very nice, was that with the camera too?

I’m shooting 177, ten shot groups, sub 20 ft-lbs, my USFT is unregulated too… 😉

Shoot that 22 at 125-150 yards, ten shot groups and then we’ll talk. 😀

No I didn’t use camera. I can’t see anything when shooting inside.

I did not see the caliber was. 177 sorry. but my Rainstorm. 177 does 0.42 at 50 yards with 5 shot groups. Will try it again this week and make sure I remember right.

😯 I simply don’t know what to say other than ” OH Wow, That Would Do It !!! 😉

The bag slider part is about 8″ long and 3″ wide, 1/4″ aluminum plate with 1″ holes drilled in it to lighten it up. Makes all the difference in the world. I came upon this technique after doing accuracy testing for 223 loads. Was using a bipod and i’ll NEVER use one again for accuracy testing. My PB rest is too high for my airguns so I don’t use it. PB’s are way lower so a higher rest is needed.

Here is my best ten shot group with my USFT #158 at 44 yards indoors a massive 0.392″… 😯

The outer ring is 1.5″ in diameter, inner is 0.5″ in diameter.

The Edgun group size is slightly larger and the Cricket a little larger than the Edgun. I don’t think a vice or fancy rest would do much to help out these group sizes. 😆

Quite a bit of similarity as I was using a bright Milwauki LED flashlight down range on the target, I need a lot of light to shoot well. I was also using two rear bags as I like a forearm bag to give that stable three point feel. I tend to discount flyers if testing the gun and “I” cause it and not discount the flyers when I am testing me ! and I cause it. Seems fair and real. :winkn:

My small guns always feel top heavy in the bags, what were you talking about to help with this ???

This what I use and highly recommend: and added stuff I purchase with it: (http://www.targetshooting.com/catalog/rifle-rests/model-1000-rifle-rest/)

1.The Model 1000 accepts any size rifle — Length adjustment is quick and easy.
2.Shooting accuracy is improved with the fine tune feature for windage adjustment.
3.The rest is leveled by horizontal fine-tuning of each foot and locked in place with an aluminum, jammer knob.
4.A Timken roller bearing, located underneath the knurled aluminum elevation knob, delivers smooth operation. replace # 4 with a larger height adjustment wheel see photo
5.Rear leather saddle is adjustable for height and tilt, and has a built in leather bumper.
6.Solid cold-rolled, zinc plated steel rods connect the forearm rest to the butt stock saddle.
7.Knurled knob engages the keyway elevation adjustment rod for solid lock-down.
8.Shooting base is made of a cast ductile ferrous compound with a silver-vain, powder coating for durability.
9.Includes 1 Quick Release Sandbag Attachment (sandbag not included).

Or AOA? lol

Ernest is service for WWAG and I make an exception there.

I wouldn’t trust the WWAG/TGAG service with a red rider or a sling shot let alone something as complicated as a regulated multi-shot… :angrymob:

Make all the exceptions you want, but perhaps you should learn the history of my WWAG experience first eh?

When I got my Cricket from WWAG, it was “tuned and tested” by Peter of TGAG. Came shooting JSB Exact Heavies 100fps over their accurate velocity, reg is waaaaaay tooooooo hot and the HST adjustment is useless unless you want to shoot at Gamo speeds (just like the Edguns that are factory set, not “tuned” as I was told mine was).

So if by “tuning” it means turing out the HST out until it no longer adjusts the velocity and shipping it as “tuned” then WWAG/TGAG isn’t all it’s cracked up to be is it? And what exactly can I say to get it shooting better if I was to return it, it was sent out “tuned” and if that is what they call tuned, who in their right mind would send it back to such an outfit?

Perhaps that is the reason why Ernest is now the service guy. 😉

Please elaborate…. Steve seems to offer great customer service and I thought that Ernest does there warranty work. Everything I hear on Ernest is great.

See my post in the Edgun topic about the prices being raised. It goes over my experience with Peter at TGAG, who apparently was the service tech for WWAG prior to Ernest. I outlined the “issues” I have with the ‘tuned’ Cricket I received from WWAG mid July last year above.

If Ernest would like to rectify the issues (on Steve’s dime) and test it out to 50 yards i’d happily send it to him. Needs the reg adjusted and the shroud is crooked as it threads on, oh and the POI changes from mag to mag.

Sorry if this doesn’t support everyone’s exaltations of the Cricket platform, but it’s the experience i’ve received so far from owning one. :angrymob:

Ernest does great work!
It’s probably the reason they hires him. Would be nice to have a guy in house to do all the work. Good tuners are hard to find and I guess that’s the only other way. My friend wanted to buy a cricket last summer but (they) could not get it to shoot 33 fpe. Ernest had mine shooting 33fpe with one phone call and a package in the mail. He Sent me a regulator set to where I could get the power and I sent him mine back in exchange. Now I have a brand new regulator with new Usa orings for next to nothing

Here is the ‘bag slider’, it’s essentially a knee rest for field target set at it’s lowest setting. What you see here has been cut down by almost an inch. When set at it’s lowest setting the rods are only showing 1/4″ between the clamp and the base.

I have not shot Cricket using vise. I have bipod in the front and adjustable rear bag.

I use a gun vise at times to eliminate myself from the picture. I have had a lot of luck with PCPs and my CTK gun vise. It is really stable and everything is held in rubber. I cannot shoot as good of groups w/o it as I can with it and I have really tried to beat it. 😮
