Q:

Been lurking on the Benchrest forums….

something’s come to mind. other than the Lothar Walther barrels, what other barrels are out there for .25? ive seen some of the benchrest guys using Benchmark barrels, Krieger barrels… ive posted questions to them, no replies yet though. Nobody’s given up any specs. Has anyone used/tested any other brands other than Lothar Walther? I’ve not seen enough good info about the Smooth Twist to warrant spending the dough, or seen a solid supplier of HW barrels to count them either. I’m only looking to push the standard pellets out there, around 50fpe, and maybe apply what i learn from these questions to my project condor set up for Jerry’s slugs…

DAVE_424: I would definitely would rather go through you. so how would I go about ordering through you? and i just love starting threads that makes people happily scratch their heads, and gets them thinking!!! 😈 it makes for awesome projects in the future!

I know… And if one shoots diabolo type of bullet, one doesn’t need fast twist at all. Diabolo stabilizes even from smooth bore.

But bullet like projectiles require or presuppose somewhat faster twist rates. And, longer the bullet, faster the twist rate needed.

So, all and everything depends on what one wants to shoot.

bear in mind the twist rates usually differ a good deal.

In my opinion, would be great to hear reports about using quality benchrest barrels in airguns, I mean, if there would appear any reports.

Those quality firearm barrelsa are not that different to airgunbarrels. Shallow-landed, large-grooved and mirror-polished barrels should shoot fine no matter what sort of gas or gasses are used as propelling forces.

Would those bechrest barrel companies machine their barrels in what ever measurements their client wants??? That’s something which bothers me the most, because I don’t have appropriate machinery to to cut firearm barrel down to airgun size.

Yeah getting the blank is just fine, you should be able to order straight from the website that I use

http://www.airgunspares.com/store/category/72/491/BSA/

But if you want to use me to get around any import tax you might have to pay then that’s fine by me

ooh, ooh….. Would it be possible to just get the blank?? 😯

Dave also makes great shrouds and LDS, if you need them. 😉

Yeah same price, would you need it machined to fit the condor?

Dave

$8….5……$85?! 😯 okay, (play it cool Cab…play it cool…) so how do I go about ordering one? i will keep this barrel set aside for when I build up my Dawson Reciever…. 😈 Would a .22 barrel be the same price? Dave_424 you are a life saver!!!

I have been working on another project for the past few months so haven’t been on the forum in a while.

$85 can get you a BSA barrel 24″ that is blued.

From what other poeple have told me, Gamo has been working with BSA for quite a few years.

BSA barrels are usually 5/8″ in diameter

They are choked, because they are hammer forged on a mandrel, they have a taper along the whole length of the bore and I think a final tightening on one end. The long taper allows them to remove the internal mandrel after forging.

Dave

ooooh, dave_424…just the person I’ve been wanting to speak to!! how much US? and are the BSA barrels choked? what is the longest length i can get the .25 in? and what is the O.D. of the barrel? sorry for all the questions… 🙄 I just thought that the BSA barrels were going to either go down in quality or be unobtainable because of the Gamo aquisition…

My .25 BSA is a real shooter, just recently got a .177 barrel and its bang on.

Easy for me to get at a very reasonable price

wow, ill have to congratulate Tim when i get the chance to call him…Gentlemen, if i could do any kind of metal/machine work…id be in trouble…not only would i be doing my own projects, but i would probably be entertaining the more feasible ideas on here… *sigh* if only i could!! Moneyshot: you do have a point- but it’s always better to start off with a better barrel. ccant make a purse from a sow’s ear… and ive read so much about LW barrels not being up to snuff w/their .25 barrels as of late. plus, i’d really like to see what other barrels are capable of. hence me wanting to do benchrest. it opens up a whole new world (dont any of you dare start singing!!) of possibilities and like-minded and knowledgeable people to pick their brains.

bottom line,

there are many alternatives, some are easier to acquire than others.

also, if you buy blank and turn yourself, proper crowning is paramount.

look to some reputable barrelmakers, assess what you can spend, and spend.

barrels are a lottery, you just want to go with the best odds(every barrelmaker has a substandard barrel here and there.) hell, ive got a crosman barrel that after polishing, is EVERY bit as accurate as the best of em. just cheap steel, and you dont kno whether its gonna be great or garbage.

about cz barrels. if you turn yourself, i am told that it is a grainy steel thats hard to machine, just fyi

my opinion, button rifled barrels are capable of just as much quality as hammer forged. the reason hammer forging has such a bad rap in the BR crowd is the warping of the steel due to internal stresses. with an airgun, i frankly dont regret hunting down a hammer forged barrel, though that doesnt mean they’re better, ive become accustomed to their particular traits.

about HFd barrels heating and warping, i havent heard a compaint from sako yet… 😉

a final note: LW was having problems with AG barrel bores being fat in the middle a little bit ago, may want to look into seeing if that problem disapperared yet. that was the reason i spent ungodly money for a drum-made BSA. if you by chance buy a british made .25, they are actually about .243″, uk bore size 5, which makes almost all pellets tight and slugs taxing.

bout all i got, time for some more dexedrine… 😯

Tim took Bronze at BR worlds 😛
