Blodnob/Selph valve users. Which spring??

Wondering if some of you are using the hammer spring that came with the valve or the factory spring? I’m using the factory one still, the one sent was too heavy for me. I would like to have something a little bit heavier myself even though it shoots well like it is now in my stock SS .22. Me like power!

I dont have my rifle in front of me, so this is an estimate.

The powerwheel, from the barrel bushing end to the shoulder the spring contacts is over 1″ when fully closed (at 0). Fully extended (at 12) , the compression is another .75″ at least. So I am guessing the spacer equivelent to you Brits is about 45mm if the PW is fully extended.

Now the powerwheel has an extension past the shoulder that is 5/8″ long, and the normal spring slides over it to the shoulder. The spring brad supplied does not. So that further precompresses that heavy spring to a rediculous level.

For now, I am using the original standard spring with a brass striker and brass hammer I just made but cannot weigh. My electronic scale for some reason went bonkers and will not calibrate.

Anyway, going by “feel” the hammer combo is quite heavy compared to the original striker and standard hammer, which weighs 68 grams combined.

Velocity with a 31gr Kodiak is in the 990’s with the PW at 4.
With the Brad spring, they break the barrier with the PW at 0.

I have another reason to stop using the heavy spring. It has ripped the threads out of my cocking knob, and caused the grub screw on the bottom of the frame to strip.

I retapped it to .25/20, used a stainless grub screw. I put the grub screw on a surface grinder with a coffee grinder, and made the business end of the grub .188″ just long enough to contact the barrel thru the bushing.

A coffee grinder is a term our machinist used to describe a tool with a collet, and it turns like a fishing reel handle. You set the screw in the collet, adjust height of the grinding wheel, and rotate the handle to turn the end of the screw down. Neat job and doesnt bugger the threads up.

I made another for my 12″ barrels, needed a longer section of .188″ to contact the barrel.

Pictures later, if I dont forget.

There is a bushing in front of the powerwheel and if the spring is smaller in diameter, it just maybe forcing the spring further up.

I use: 0.075″, 0.880″, 11.5 turns, 4″ free length. so my spring is 8#s/inch rate.

Installed with 1/2″ preload gives 4#s force and hammer stroke of 1.8″ so 18#s force when cocked.

For my bigbore stuff that spring is stretched to 5″ and then gets an hour in the toaster oven. Spaced up for coil bind and gives a pretty fair whack

What is the spring rate for the supplied spring?
IIRC the standard spring is about 3.5 lbs/inch.

Maybe some of the people that feel the spring is to strong use heavier and thus longer custom hammers?

Or there are big differences between euro and US models.
On a stealth barrel it is 7.5 inches from the rear bushing to the rear barrel end, less 1.5 inches of spacers in my case.

It seems to be much less on the US guns with the powerwheel.

Why the hell would a blod valve need 125 grams of hammer to work.

LOOK GUYS, HERES THE LOWDOWN(AGAIN)

I use either a 50 gram or 96 gram hammer with a blod valve. IT DOES NOT REQUIRE LARGE EFFORT TO COCK WITH THE SUPPLIED BLOD SPRING!!!!!

YOUR POWER WHEEL MUST BE CAUSING MASSIVE OVER COMPRESSION.

WOULD SOMEONE POST A PICTURE OF THE SUPPLIED SPRING NEXT TO A RULER SO WE CAN RULE OUT AN OVERLY LONG SPRING!!!

You guys should not be having problems with this cocking thing. I’m convinced you either got too long springs or the powerwheel is fucking it up by over compressing. Here, from the bushing to spring I use about 10 mm (.39″)of spacer. How big is that power wheel???

90 grams is more than enough to make big power IMHO
The spring in mine is 4#s preload and 24#s fully cocked operates very easy with one thumb tip.

There’s definitely a very fine balance to be found. With the 50gr hammer and two spacers (approx 17mm) I got eleven 1050fps shots (31-grain .25 Kodiaks) at approx 36psi each (3000psi down to 2600psi). It’ll be interesting to see how/if that changes with 10mm of spacer on the 100gr hammer.
