Q:

Bullpups and side-scopes

Hi Guys,

it’s a long time now that I’m fancying a weird idea and I would like to know if anybody has tried this before.

Considering the very particular shape of a BP, the way to hold and to aim…..

Did anybody ever try to mount the scope laterally instead of on top of the gun?

I think that mounting the scope laterally, let’s say between 60 and 90 degrees from the top, could result in a more natural way of aiming.

You guys that have the tools and the knowledge (WingM, Ride, Ernest, etc, etc,) to make this particular rail/mounts/attachment, did you ever experiment with something like this?

Maybe it’s completely wrong  but I really have the feeling that it could work out to a better aiming and shooting of a BP.

ATB 😀

Do that mounts have a name like “side-mounts” or similar? (How to google for that or where to get them?)

Thanks in advance!

great.. do I win a Cricket or something? 😆

I guess that mount above is a custom project.

But the offset picatinny mount is a flashligh/laser mount. I got it from here: http://dx.com/p/accu-20mm-aluminum-alloy-gun-barrel-laser-flashlight-mount-with-hex-wrench-black-283921

Shotgun is the best. I have a short barreled (with rifle sights) semi-auto Remington 1187 ready too.

That’s a funny picture. I guess if you are forced to a side scope position because the bolt opening will hit the scope then go for it. 😯

On the AR platform the only sight I know about that swings up is a magnifier for the Eotech holographic sights so they can blast around inside buildings and then shoot them running away at 100 yards or more by flipping up the magnifier. It still only operates in the up position in concert with the Eotech. I never bought the magnifier because they are expensive but forked out for two Eotechs. They are cool on an AR for shooting at 100 yards or less on larger objects.

The uninvited house guest gun (the magnifiers swing up right behind the Eotechs)

Eotech w/ 3x Magnifier (you can see the hinge where it swings down)

That adapter is a flashlight mount. I’m not sure they are designed to have the same ability to hold zero that a scope mount has.

You’re dead right they don’t……….. 😉

As for buying some, – just put in a search for scope mounts or the likes on ebay. They come out of China for next to nothing in terms of dollars and can be used for a variety of accessories….

you mean like this?

or maybe using this adapter:

the reason why scopes and sighting equipment is directly on top of barrels is = Gravity! the trajectory the projectile follows obeys the laws of gravity..assuming a perfect flight, the rise and drop to point of impact is in a vertical line..

in this situation, it is Goodbye holdover and holdunder.. for the poi intersect will only be one point the sight is set for.

Dearest Uncle Hoot and Larry,

thank you for the valuable information in both fields. 😀

This is the prove that this forum is 360 degrees open to discussions and sharing of human knowledge

(Dearest Uncle Hoot, did you stop taking the pills and therefore feeling more relieved?) 😀

Hoot, I fear that maybe an oxycodon recollection. A “roll-over mount” is a sexual position often employed by arthritic lesbians. 😎

i believe such an instrument already exists for the AR-15 platform. It’s for low profile shooting (ie: some sum’ bitch on the other side of the field is trying to kill you) and you do not want your head to be the tallest object protruding from your rifle.

I can’t remember for certain, but I believe it is called a “roll-over mount” that positions your optic on top of the rail, or can be rolled 45 degrees over to the side. If you have a desire to have your skull lateral, and as low as your firearm, instead of the conventional position of protruding above the weapon. This reduces an important six inches or so of profile for the other guy to aim at, and to some concerned individuals, that’s very important!

Just a memory of something I read. Might be worth “Googling”.

Hoot:

Well I’ve played again a bit with the scope mounted laterally instead of on top on the rail and for me the sighting and aiming feels so much more natural and comfortable 😀

I’m sure that if this BP fashion thing is going to continue then soon some scope makers will bring on the market some specific “bullpup side scopes” with adjustable vertical zero offset to the left or the right side.

Sure it’s something completely new for BPs but I see this thing coming. 😀

(Unless there is really some optical/technical impediment that I don’t catch/understand at the moment)

Actually not.

I mean the airrifle upright and the scope instead of being on top of the rail at the side of the rail.

Let’s say it’s filling the gap between your right eye and the rifle itself if you shoulder it on the right side.

You mean like this!

Thank you all for the good info 😀

Maybe someone with the right tools and skills will do it one day, just to see the pros and cons and the technical limitations.

Thanks again!
