Q:

Can you shoot a talon in competition?

Now that I have my talon on the way I have been searching around the net and discovered that the Air Rifle World Field Target Championship is held about 15 miles from my house here in middle Tn..After looking at the results from last year there wasnt a single Air Force gun at the shoot..all Theoben’s Steyr’s and some I have never heard of..Do you think these guns are not allowed? or not considered fancy ’nuff?? thanks!

Well, you’ve been golfing before haven’t ya? 😆
no matter how bad you are, there’s a cold one or six waiting for you when you’re done. 😆

Do it!

Actually I have golfed once..the first shot I hit a house built next to the course..I managed 10 of the 18 holes and then hit the beer and was the designated drinker… 😆

Dude, if the shoot is that close, you gotta go for it.

Best case, you might outshoot and therefore freak a few people out who have $3000+ guns and wear funny hats.

Worst case? Well, you’ve been golfing before haven’t ya? 😆
Same thing… no matter how bad you are, there’s a cold one or six waiting for you when you’re done. 😆

If it was that close to me, I’d be all over it, and damn the torpedos. 😉

Do it!

I fixed the grooming quote’s so they credited the correct poster.

Also – The world Championships were held there in 2007, they move to a different country every year.

With very few exceptions, you’ll embarrass yourself otherwise.

she spots us and comes over to chat with him..when she left I told him he needs to buy her a razor..
with that said thanks for all the helpful suggestions…

A couple other things you may want to consider…

1. Train your body and muscles to shoot from the “field target” position- this becomes very difficult during the last couple of lanes when fatigue sets in.

2. See if the club has a “hunter class” match, that might prove to be more advantageous toward the AF guns. The rules and course are such that those “fancy”, high tech and expensive rigs do not offer advantages. This levels the playing field for basic guns of any caliber and low fixed mag scopes. Also the Ranges used are a normally a lot shorter than True FT. International rules limit hunter class to 10x power magnification and no range finding for click values to get the pellet into the kill zone. Hunter class also allows for any shooting position – including resting the rifle/body on anything available with in reach.

3. If you skip number two, i wouldn’t recommend attempting FT with anything less than a 24x scope. With very few exceptions, you’ll embarrass yourself otherwise. I would also encourage you to use a ballisitcs/pellet trajectory calculator, to determine your “click” values at various distances.

4. The other thing you want to be cognizant of is total number of shots prior to POI shift, for most matches you’ll need at least 40 good shots. The good news is that our AF guns can be tuned to deliver plenty of shots <20 ft/lbs…

If I was that close to the matches I would definatly take advantage of that,I bet you, the air force and a good shooter, will rank in the top 20 percent and if not it would be a hell of alot of fun.

I’m very interested in trying with my .20 on co2 for the short shots and putting on the air for long range shots would this possibly be legal..

The club just may let you do that but you really need to know how your guns shoots to pull that off.

your gun has to shoot under 20fpe

This is interesting.. what does a .22 talon ss do?

With a .22 790fps will put right under 20fpe with 14.3gr pellet but your trajectory will not be flat. shrpshotr28 is spot on and the .177’s will shoot flatter. It will be tough to shoot a .22 but I have seen it done.

also keep in mind that most shoot .177 for FT.

one reason: a .177 can be shot with more velocity (flatter trajectory) while remaining under the 20ftlb limit

another: the .177 passes cleanly through the KZs more easily than the larger .22 cal. a pellet that clips the edge of the kill zone often will not knock over the target.

a 15gr pellet at 772fps is 19.85fpe

a 10.2 .177 kodiac can be driven 935fps for 19.8fpe.

This will help you get ready. I would set it at 35 for the difficulty to start and work your way up. Also keep in mind that your gun has to shoot under 20fpe. e-mail the club for more Info.
