Q:

Cast bullets, power and frame flex, a thin precarious line

I shoot long range, 150 yards and further with cast bullets in the AF platform.

I use a dechoked LW 25 caliber barrel, a custom stretched Talon SS frame, a heavy spring and hammer to power a Dyotat valve and cast bullets from 56 to 75grains at 115 to 125 FPE and I do it tethered usually around 3400 PSI.

I get groups at times around MOA for 5 shots at 150 yards and at times 285 yards. I will paint 6 small dots on a 3×4 sheet of black painted steel and shoot 6, 5 shot groups, go down and measure them, re paint and do it all over again. When everything falls together, I take a picture of them and post them for you.

Problem is they are not consistant, one group will be 1.75 inches and the next under identical conditions will be 5 inches. It is frustrating beyond belief.

One day I will get very tight groups, think I am on to something and the next outing it all goes to shit again.

I get a lot of PMG’s and emails from shooters wanting to know how to modify their Condors to shoot cast bullets at high enough FPE to be accurate at long range.

I explain to them they need to get a unchoked barel, or cut thier choke off, a bigger valve, Dyotat’s 25 caliber valve on your body being the best IMHO, a higher fill pressure and to open that big valve against the high pressure, a stronger spring to power a heavier hammer.

The problems is, the AF platform, as WOK likes to mention was not designed for this, and he is right.

The frame has flex problems, and again WOK has pointed this out in the past by telling us to put a laser on the rib of the tube and then shoulder the rifle with a strong grip and watch that laser dot move against the crosshairs.

Now I read folks who say they have not problem with POI change induced by frame flex, but they are not shooting 150 yards with 75 grain cast bullets powered by heavy hammers and springs, in short they are using their rifles for what they were designed for, 65 FPE and under.

And they have not done the laser test.

Problem is for long range you need cast bullets, Diablos don’t cut it, and you need high FPE, the AF platform has trouble providing this. You need 115 or more FPE to resist wind drift and reliably throw high BC cast bullets down range for any consistant groups.

Simply put the frame is flimsy. It is light aluminum, has dimesions that vary badly, has a poor barrel mounting system and a Power wheel cutout that is nothing but sucidical for frame/barrel integrity.

Before you get all hot under the collar, ever look at a benchrest PB or a Hi power competition PB?

They carry heavy thick barrels and they sleeve the actions, if it is a AR 15 based rilfe, it has a heavy barrel and a tube forearm. The AF platform has none of these action and barrel stiffeners, the tube on the AF does not float the barrel like on a AR, it bears directly against the barrel bushings and thus moves the barrel when the frame is flexed.

Practionors of those disciplines would laugh at the AF line and the flimsy components, these flaws result in the frame flexing when held in different postions between shots or shooting seccions, and vibration and stress directed towards the barrel by the impact of ultra heavy springs and hammers.

The frame needs work, the hammer spring system is what it is, it is how the rilfe works and can’t really be changed in my opinion, and every single time I step up to heavier hammers and heavier spring, power goes up and accuracy goes south.

Part of these problems can be remedied thru strengthing the frame. For conventional use, ie, what the rifle was designed for, the WOK guard works very well, the Maddog stock does better yet if you can live with how it changes the balance and looks of the rifle.

But none of this fixes the impact of heavy hammers and springs and how that stress relates to groups at long range.

I have this week tried putting a AF Tri rail on the carrying handle and on the rib in place of the forearm, I saw no improvement.

I think the cottage industry needs to step forward and create a stiffing system that either replaces the frame with a steel tubed frame without a Power wheel hole, which is a serious defect in the integrety of the frame or a thick unflexable Picatinny rail that will run the full length of the under and upper ribs. Or a WOK type guard that either extends to give a free floating forearm and hopefully is made of steel.

But in the end what we need is a stiff steel tube with fire control rails made of steel welded on.

Problems is there are not enough buyers to make this feasable at a reasonable price point, perhaps as this long range game becomes more popular that will change.

All this is heavy, and will really change the ergonomics of the rifle, but for long range shooting at targets this is a good trade off in my opinion.

The power is there, Dyotat has provided that in a reliable remake of the valve for 25 caliber bores, we now need a better aftermarket frame.

I look at fully supported Maddog stocks, and I look a slightly stiffer TJ barrels, but I just can’t justify the finacial outlay when I can get a Haley Scandalous that will shoot circles out of what I have come up with so far and is made from the start for long range with cast bullets and is in the same price range once everything is bolted on a AF platform purchased for that purpose..

I am not saying throw your AF rifles in the junk pile, if you want more power, use Dougs valve, a slightly heavier hammer and spring put on a WOK guard or a Maddog stock, use Jerrys slugs and be satisfied with 100 FPE, because right now, with what we have for frames, your throwing money towards the wrong platform.

Could be.

I put a medium weight spring in two days ago, and brought the velocity down to 850 FPS with the 56 grain LBT bullet.

Accuracy for three shot groups immediately improved.

But then the gun broke down, the check valve in my angled tank adapoter broke and the nipple started leaking. So I am not able to test it at 150 yards with 5 sot groups. But int he past reducing the jar to the gun brought on by heavy springs has always improved accuracy.

Joe Brancato came to the rescue and I have one and a spare on its way.

And I am also seriously considering a Maddog Excaliber stock, it should be compatable with a angled tank adapter, a mod I will not give up. It will take some work to get it to fit, perhaps a little grinding and definately a 1 inch or more butt extension.

Time will tell.

You have the wrong tool for the job it seems RC.

I did not say they were innovative, although in the beginning they apparently were with the development of their airguns. What I said was they see what you guys are doing, watch to see if there is enough of a market to adapt your ideas and then do such.

It appears on the edge should get a few more posts under his belt and review AF history before he decides that AF is such an inovative company.

AirForce makes $500.00 guns that they sell for $600.00, and they do a relatively poor job of it . The system is touted as one with intercahngeable barrels, trouble is the frames and bushings for those barrels are all over the map in measurements.

They also steal others ideas, but don’t despair, they usually muff it when they do, ie., AF’s version of the ETAC, the spin lock.

Or a concept that should have been still borne, the Talon pistol.

I remember well when we were playing with the .25 bbl’s. AF had a fit. And god help you if yiou mentioned using a .25 in they’re gun. They were quick to tell you that it was foolhardy. Of course, after looseing bbl.s sales, they followed the money/

I have ask them repeatedly, why they feel it nessiary to machine a slot in the frame for the breach to the point that the frame is almost cut in half.
Works jsut fine they say. Never a complaint they say. Well bull shit. I know of many who have mailed, called, e-mailed them on this very issue. Over many years now. They don’t give a shit. In fact, they have run down the Talon ag forum and Tony in partiular, on the net, on the phone, and worse, at trade shows, including the Shot show. Just mentioning you belong to the Forum will get you a stiff lecture from them. (And to think how much money and inovation we have given them over the years)!

If you have ever caught an airing of AirGunner tv, you can very easilly see the market they see themselvs in.
They see us a adolecent, pimple faced no ball geeks.

The adds they put up are enough to make me ashamed that I own one at times. Worse than gamo, if that is possible.

They don’t see themselves as manufacturing an adult anything. Sadly! ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

i have just about given up on my SS…havent shot it in ages…so i took it out thinking i would stack some lead.

2700 psi fill…i could hear the speed pick up…and not as quiet as i remembered….

this is at 20 yards ! pretty temperature sensitive imho….thats why it has been sitting in the safe for so long…if it wasnt looking like frankenstein with the scars of a lot of use and .308…-457 mods i would sell it..but it is worthless to sell…so it can just keep sitting in the safe…get pulled out to shoot steel targets where you dont need รผber precision…

ok …i was just out shooting a bit more…if i keep the power up high with max preload it actually stay’s put, even after 10 minutes in the sun…but its loud that way (yeah it is pickled) its just pushing 32 fpe in that setup

The real issue is there has been extremely little exploration and development of the basic AF layout versus that done on the Crosman/CaptChur/QB layout
Dennis started playing with this years before AF even existed and nearly every Big Bore since has followed in his well beaten tracks
conversely what do we have for the AF platform? 2 or 3 one off customs big bores with handmade frames, valves, ect…not much previous work to build from really

personally my opinion is to toss most of the AF design and go to a milled from bar stock frame and a completely different breech/hammer layout
messing with cloning off the AF gun with better materials and QC will still not overcome basic faults built into the design

yeah but their listening seems to be more “bandwagon” than innovative. Not knocking the company. I support them, but it is time they step up and address the LR game. They could have used the time and resources they wasted on the talon P towards this goal….

You guys need to keep in mind that you are out on the leading edge in airgunning. You are talking about shooting over 100 yards. It was not too long ago that was unthinkable.

You lament that the present AirForce frame is unsuitable for your needs and you are correct, but maybe you should keep something in mind. A while back, airgunners wanted a relatively inexpensive PCP air rifle that was still of good enough quality to compete with the very expensive European air rifles that were available. AirForce introduced the Talon.

When you began building shrouds to cover the barrel and reduce the report, AirForce saw that there was enough of a market to warrant production and introduced the Talon SS.

When you began modifying the valves and putting larger bore barrels in them so you could hunt small game, AirForce introduced the Condor.

When you guys started getting serious about teaching your kids about airgunning and competition shooting, AirForce introduced the Edge.

When you started making compact powerhouses, AirForce introduced the TalonP.

When you started lamenting that you had to remove the tank to fill it and there was no pressure gauge, AirForce introduced the Spin-Loc.

Now you want a more rigid frame for long range shooting. It would likely not be difficult to start with the Edge frame extrusion and leave the top and bottom “tabs” the full length of the tube and only machine the breach and bolt opening on one side. This would provide a much more rigid frame AND require less machining time. You would lose the power wheel, but most of you do not care anyway.

As for the trigger, you will likely have to develop that yourselves. A fine trigger that can be adjusted down to a few ounces is both expensive and fraught with litigation possibilities.

In your development of a trigger, do not confine yourself to the present trigger assembly space. Maybe take something like the Wokguard and make it a little taller and hollow it out. Also look at a “rolling” sear like that of a crossbow or some of the older Crosman CO2 rifles. Think on it for a while and one of you guys will pull it off.

AirForce does indeed seem to be listening. If they see enough of a market, they seem to step up and fill it.

I think your correct.

Lets examine this, each AF frame is unique in demensions it seems, so if your going to rebarrel with a TJ barrel, you need bushings to fit the frame, and a custom hammer to fit the frame, so all that needs to be made by someone like Doug.

So why not buy sturdy seamless tubing, cut the bushings, hammer and tank holder put it all in a piece of tubing you bought from McMaster-Carr and weld or screw and glue a trigger rail on it that takes a real trigger like a modified Timney, or the very least like the sear that is put out now instead of that trigger AF sells?

Manufacture a tirgger guard, or buy a WOK guard if it fits the manufactured frame and put a angled tank adapter on it and your good to go.

With a frame like that most of the problems would be solved.

Not quite.

Your still stuck with 135 to 150 FPE max in 25, and your still 100 FPE behind a Haley.

Not to mention your way more into it on the finacial end than a Haley. Not that that matters because we who like to do this stuff do it anyway regardless of the cost.

Probably why we don’t see a lot of steel tubing Condors out there and Jack and Reba have such a long list.

But the Talon SSS shoots as good at 150 yards as a average MIA Rack grade with M60 ball or a run of the mill 94 Winchester, it is just not a varmit rifle.

When I get my Haley, if it shoots like I expect it to, I will just retire the Talon SSS for a long range gun, put a 2×7 Burris on it and use it for things that go bump in my Walter Mitty night.

my project frame has been on the backburner for some time
what I did was to have Walt cut the frame just behand the power wheel opening then thread it off to take the standard AR15 barrel nut.

still to go is permenently mounting a chunk of EGW 1913 rail extrusion and slotting it for a left side cocking knob with an 8mm shaft

this is for a 9mm build using a Blod 9mm valve, breech and hammer with a 9mm Career barrel

need a few more compenents fabbed
different hammer spring set up
monolithic barrel bushing to work with the AR free float hand guard
should be a decent set up and will allow rapid barrel removal with hopefully return to zero

truth is though it would have been more effective to just fab a whole new frame

Something like that ๐Ÿ™‚
