I posted a picture somewhere of a leaper’s scope on a mirror when I was optically centering it.. It helped when I mounted it in adjustable mount’s on a very droopy Gamo in conjunction with bore sighting. Other than that situation – I wouldnt waste your time.

Waiting on a thread about lapping scope rings next….

The only time I’ve heard optically centering help anything is when you have windage scope mounts or you’re prepared to shim the rear ring.

Advantages of optical center? not sure… maybe that the adjustments aren’t at their max?

If your gun is reliable then why bother messing with it? Buy a high quality scope instead.

The problem is that most scope mounting rails are parallel to the bore so the verticle clicks required to get on target are fixed. It doesn’t matter if you started from center or the bottom, you’re going to end up in the same place.

Now, some rails or Tri-Rail adapters are not parallel in the horizontal plane. If you center your scope and find you need to click significantly to the right or left to get on target, you might have identified a problem. If you have to make a big adjustment in windage to get on target after the optical centering (assuming no wind), you probably need to shim your mount. If you don’t, you may find that your windage is only “on” at one yardage.

Other than troubleshooting, I don’t see much point in the cenetering exercise unless using an adjustable mount.

I think the idea is to bore sight if possible with the scope optically centered allowing you the largest number of usable clicks.

I might be a big dummy, But I don’t understand your guys reluctance about this.

I do know this is not needed with fixed power scopes.
But variable power scopes that have multiple lenses in them..what the hell, why not!

Its absolutely free, only takes a few minutes to do, and can be done with stuff laying around the house. Does it really do shit..who knows

But the price is right, Why would you NOT do it?

gun is sighted in
take the scope off the rifle
do the mirror alignment
put scope on rifle
adjust crosshairs right back where they were
gun is sighted in

seems like a pretty stupid waste of time and energy.

Aren’t the reticles etched on the lens now, instead of being independent wires?

I can remember in my youth that getting the scope to hit where I aimed, the crosshairs went off to the left, and up a bit. So the crosshairs were not centered inside the scope. a cockeyed way to shoot, but still better than the buckhorn iron sights on that rolling block single shot.

Probably didn’t help that we used that rifle barrel for a jack handle, but times were hard. However, I do remember reading those old Field and Stream magazines that were howling about how the new scopes had crosshairs that remained centered in the scope all the time, regardless of adjustment.

The problem was who the hell had $49.00 to spend on a dang premium 4X scope? That was a third of the cost of a Belgium Browning auto shotgun! It was insanity I tell you….pure insanity!

Hoot 😯

I believe the older AF Tri Rail was a little off center, thus the new improved Tri Rail. When the scope is mounted off center the further past your zero point you attempt to shoot, the further off the POI. Granted, it may be a small amount unless you zero for 18 yards and expect it to be also zero at 100 yards. Maybe it would be off less than 1/2 ” at 100 yards but I bought a one piece fully adjustable mount to adjust for drop and off center.

Never seen the point in it myself either Walter. You gotta adjust it anyway when its mounted. Though it would be interesting to centre one just to find out how much out it is when you put it on the rifle first off.

ohhh…BTW…scope is fine it rolled off shooting rest to the grass mab 2 foot fall its now on my hw97

okay, good to know.

so did ‘centering’ that scope do anything for you? nope, didn’t think so.
I bet you mounted it on the 97 and adjusted for POI as needed and never gave the centering a second thought. 🙂

OOPPPS sorry

Thanks Tezz, hope your new rifle works out. Keep that brother away from your airguns teehee Tell him to get his own, maybe a Gamo or somesuch

Thanks for the comments. there are some that don’t find humour in my posts. Glad you did.
Take care
