Cheap Optics
I tend to work on you get for what you pay for. But a few of my friends are getting in to long range shooting so thought id give it a go. It is just for fun so I am looking to do it on the cheap!
So I got looking and found Vector Optics Counterpunch 6-25×56. The zoom range looked about right for what I was planning. It is mil dot that a like to use and it is front focal plane so true at any magnification. But I am worried it is going to be to cheap and just a load a junk.
Do any of you have experience with this Vector Oprics scope or any of there scopes? Or could you recommend a better one on a budget.

If You’re looking for a good, best buy in price category, tactical, FFP, stay away from the “leupold tacticool”, that will cost 2K and up. Not what ya looking for, and not cheap for the budget minded hobbyist………….?

The Elite 4200 3-12×44 FFP is the next best step up the Ladder so as to say is in the 700 $ range so is over budget and not in the 24x so is not a good choice for you and above the Hobby range.

You may want to call and talk to these to gunsmiths to get a no bullshit conversation about what you want and what quality is available @ your budget, They talk no bull and won’t sell you any bullshit either.
Stay away from used/bargain deals, most used are sold for a reason, which is a problem you discover later is not a bargain @ all, accept this fact and you’re good to go with buying used.

Chears guys that was what I expected really. I am big fan of the Bushnell scopes. I have a 4200 on my other gun so may just have to treat myself to another for Christmas. Unless I see a Leupolds that takes my fancy.

I had this online discussion with Deutsch last week. He was after good optics, had decided on Leupold and was going to pay a lot for a scope at a online retailer.
I turned him onto Gunbroker.com. They had a myrad of new Leupolds, but they have some very reasonable used Leupolds.
Remember if buy a used Leupold, it is guaranteed for life for YOU. Years ago a friend of mine bought a 4 power leupold with a broken crosshair in a garage sale for 20 bucks, he sent it back to leupold and they rebuilt it for free. What can you say to that?
Anything wrong, you send it back and they fix it pronto.
I have been bidding all week on a Leupold varix 2 in 6×18 AO it started at 250 and I just got outbid and the bid now is 281., that is just one example. Another one I missed it was a varix ll 6×18 AO with target knobs and mildot, nobody bid on it, buy now price was 250.
Deutsch bought a 6.5×20 for 550 I believe. I am now bidding on a 3x10x50 AO. I made my longest shot in my hunting carreer with that scope. I hit a coyote in a field under my house at 732 yards 2 out of 3 times, so 10 power will work for long range work. I think Carlos Hathcock used a ten or a 12 power when he did his incredable feats of marksmanship in Vietnam.
Bottom line, register with Gunbroker, do searches under scopes and use your credit card or paypal for protection for you.
And Holdover is right, stay away from cheap glass if you really want results.

Boy,thats kind of a tough one
The thing is, good quality scopes start at 500+
and thats really the lower end of good scopes .
If your dialing in your shots according to the distance , your going to need a scope that has repeatable clicks , a lot of cheaper scopes wont be able to repeat the exact point of impact over and over. There is too much “”slop””in the turrents.There’s no getting around it .
However if your not going to be dialing in your shots there are a lot of cheaper scopes that will work fine .
Im sure the Vortex will fill your needs , but dont judge by magnification alone . There are a lot of bells and whistles out there that you dont really need
I would recommend that you get a scope that you can use on powder burner rifles as well , so you can swap em out when you want to.
the Bushnell elite series are very good for thier price range .but are on the high side of “”cheap”” .
The Leupold’s are also excellent , but dont have the magnification that you want in that price range.
If your just shooting air rifle @100 yards +, your not really going to need more than 15x power . bigger is better of course, but you might want to sacrifice a little power for better quality. I can get just over one inch groups @100 yards with a 10x Leupold.
If your looking for field target accuracy your going to need a higher magnification .
and dont forget good mounts!!! dont buy a $400 scope and a $20 mounts!
In short, Im saying spend a little extra and get a quality scope, dont worry about the bells and whistles .I speaking from experience, I have a box full of bargain scopes that I can use to drive nails with .
Believe me , I went down the same road as you, and it cost me twice as much , because I bought several bargain scopes and then finally bit the bullet and bought a nicer one .
save yourself an expensive step just get a good one first and you wont ever look back or be sorry.
and the bonus is , they are very resellable!!! So if you want to get out it later , you can get a good chunk of your money back on a good scope, but almost never on a cheaper one.

I have to disagree with you on the used Leupold, again it is a lifetime warantee. Bushnell will just shine you on from their repair department, it happened to me and many others, ror that reason I would never buy another one of their products.
On a budget does indeed rule out the 1000 dollar leupolds, but I would always go used leupold rather than a brand I have never heard of.
And that is no bullshit.
