Steve, I know about your issues, I may have just got lucky, and since mine was a gift, I didn’t think twice, but to say thank you to the buddy who got it for me. They can be quirky, and if you do not have natural light, or specific incandescent light they will throw errors. The 30 shot string limit is built in due to the on-board memory. That’s where the chrono-connect cable/software came into play. I can shoot 100 shots, it just keeps recording. I also agree with you that the competition electronics units are better products, and don’t they come with IR lighting for the sensor/screens? That is a piece of art there, I have seen some of the powder burner guys shot strings through those at night, and it still works. Nice piece of equipment.

The chrony company accused me of being a thief because I tried to get my beta model repaired just before the warranty ran out. FUCK them!

The good news is that forced me to buy another chronograph, specifically the ProChrono Digital Model. Looking back I am pleased things went the way they did. The chrony is difficult to use; it is not intuitive. chronys only let you compile a 10 shot string vs. the 99 shot string of the ProChrono. chronys throw many error messages where it is rare to get an error message from the ProChrono; this is due to the design differences. The chrony folds, which if not fully opened, will give false readings. The best feature I found about the ProChrono is it’s user interface. The ProChrono is very user friendly and intuitive. I bought the beta model chrony because PyramidAir only sold chronys when I bought mine.

…and of course, the ProChrono can be connected to your laptop with a kit they sell.

One note, if you only need a basic Chrony to start with, buy the base model. There is a fellow in the UK who makes cables, I believe the site he runs is Chrony connect. You can Google it, I am aware that there are better made devices out there, but mine has been very reliable the two years I have owned it. When you get to the point where you want those extra “features”, first a simple 1/8″ mono headphone jack from the likes of radio shack, and a momentary push button or toggle switch will provide access to the high, low, average, SD, extreme spread, and every shot up to 30 in a string, from the “base” model. If you add the gentleman’s Chrony connect cable, and software, it will allow you to shoot a string, with your laptop or other supported device connected to the USB based cable, and it will store the data in a standard CSV file to import directly into Excel. Well worth the price he asks. I know some are not fond of the Chrony brand, but I have a friend who actually shot his, called them, sent it in for repair, and they just sent him a new one, no charge. So even if they have their quirks, the support is still quite good not to mention if you dig a little less than $100.00 will pick one up.

yep. the alpha is the base model, beta has more features like an add-on remote screen ( sold separately of course ), the gamma is the top of the heap with all the bells and whistles. just look them up online, there should be a description of each model on their website.
