Q:

CO2? Pluses and minuses???

OK, looking into Talon and considering CO2.

To me, advantages seam to be:

1) WAY less expensive (tanks are WAY cheap and can be refilled for $5- at the local paintball shop).
2) Quieter
3) TONS more shots per cannister – I was told that I can get 1000 shots off of a 12 oz. CO2 tank. Which sounds amazing. Is this accurate???

I don’t care about velocity since I will just be using it for plinking and close target shooting.

Also would love a suggestion for an aftermarket shoulder stock sleeve attachment to tighten/attach onto the tank to make it more comfortable.

What kind of velocities can I expect with a .22 18 inch barrel from CO2?

Of course I can always upgrade latter to compressed air since the same paint shop also fills tanks to 3000psi for only $5.00 …

I have a TSS in 18″ and a TSS in 24″. I find that the AirForce published C02 velocities are pretty much spot on for the CP’s I use. 735fps and 670fps for 24″ and 18″ respectively. Another plus is the extreme consistency for a target session. Shot after shot goes the same place. I mainly use the 24″ in C02 as it tears up my range in HPA and 17fpe is a good power for my 25-50 meter range. I get 600+ shots per 12 oz fill by setting the PW at 0 and the top hat so there is no play when the breech is closed (both factory recommendations). I note my 18′ gun needed a little more power wheel encouragement to be consistent so I suppose just like HPA, every Talon is different.

Downsides, shoot inside in the winter or use HPA.

Summer is coming, and perhaps more co2 shooters with the warm weather. Took 200 shots, but have a graph for you co2 shooters.

Won’t be a great match to your rifles as i’m using a 16” barrel and a lightened hammer. Lightening the hammer just give more bottom end (moves the graph to the right). Heavy hammer will just reach the peak earlier (moves the graph to the left).

The co2 adaptors seem to use the old style Condor valve (at least the two I have certainly look like it, inside and out). Co2 just doesn’t flow as well as air, so the big opening is a good thing, as will be setting the top hat to about .125” (yes…just a little less than two penny’s thickness).

Before the lighter hammer, wasn’t much reason to go past a power setting of “5”. Would eject more gas, but not go any faster (just be louder and cool off quicker). With the lighter hammer, no good reason to go past a setting of “8” or “9” for the same reason.

Used a 7gr., 7.6gr., and a 10.6gr. pellet. Energy wise, co2 likes heavy pellets. All three showed excessive vel. variations below a setting of “8”. All three didn’t show much vel. improvement past a setting of “8”. Seems like with this combination of hammer weight, temperature, and top hat setting there is little reason to set the rifle for anything but something close to 8 or 9 .

Suspect as summer comes on stronger, and temperature rises, might be able to use setting over 8 without just wasting gas.

One other rule confirmed. last tests were at 64F and today’s test were at 83F. Gave within a fraction of the predicted 40 fps increase (usually, from 60F to 90F, can guesstiamte a 2 fps rise in vel. with each degree rise in temperature).

From what I’ve read I should get somewhere around 1000 shots out of the 20 oz tank, at least that’s what I’ve read. Time will tell how many shots I actually get. As for the tank, the 20 oz is big but I find it comfortable to shoulder. I had high mounts on my Talon and I could still get a good sight picture through the scope with the 20 oz tank on, but I had to kinds “scrunch” my face down on the tank a little so I ordered a the Air Force Tri-Rail scope rail which UPS says will be delivered on MOnday. When it arrives I’ll reinstall the scope using the tri-rail and that should make it perfect for me.

If you use the 12 oz tank I would think the Tri Rail would not be necessary.

Depends on how far up you want to mount the scope…high enough rings/mounts and you can shoot with a 20oz. tank, but it’s kind of like holding a keg up to your shoulder.

12’s or 9’z are about the right diameter for my use, with a prefernce towards the thinner 9oz. tanks.

You give up a lot of speed, but I have found tht in the summer months, with the gun dialed up to near max, can get about the vel. quoted in the ads.

Co2 pressure is ependent on temperature.; even in warm weather fast shooting can cool the gun off…dropping pressure…droping vel….and dropping the pellet strike out of the group. The Talon SS, or any of them with a barrel extention, really wants to cool off. A “normal” co2 rifle vents it’s cold co2 gas out into the air..trap that co2 gas INSIDE the frame and and it cools the rifle about twice as fast (gas gets to cool the inside of the barrle, the outside of the barrel, the inside of the frame before exiting).

How many shots per tank do you think you will get out of it. And have you noticed the 20oz bottle is too big?

I have been told the 12 oz. bottle is more comfortable….

I just recently picked up a 20 oz CO2 tank for my 18 ” .22 talon and I’ve been having a blast with it. I haven’t done any chrony tests yet but it seems to be hitting pretty darn hard. I’ve been taking out starlings out to 30 yards with it with no problem at all. It’s shooting excellent dimed sized groups at 30 yards. I figured I”d switch the gun over to CO2 for the summer and use it as my bird gun. So far I”m very happy with how it shoots on the CO2 and it’s not really even that warm here yet…..
