Cocking bolt "tunnel" ridged (not smooth). Normal?
i noticed cocking action was not as smooth as it should be.
i’ve disassembled it and noticed it is “raw” finished, not polished, and with visible ridges, as if it would have needed a bit of sand paper.
the actuall bolt shaft is fairly fine, with some ridges but not that much.
is this normal?
I don’t think this has been caused by use/wear, as the ridged area is present thoughout the whole tunnel, even at the front, where the bolt slims down and doesn’t actually reach/rub, hence can’t cause any wear.

in the youtube video where Ed calibrates the rifles firing a few shots, you can see he cocks it with no effort, and no hesitation.
my spring is also a lot softer than his.
no, definitely this is not how my bolt operates, as it is more like “get the f. back now” experience.
no probl bud, i thought pics were crappy as i have taken them with my iphone.
i have ordered some mo-ly grease as i was planning to relube the entire part to smoothen things out, sure you’ll get your bolt pics in 1-2 days when i open things up again and smear the hell out of it.
i have used silicone grease for a shortwhile and it is not good at all for metal moving parts, as it gets sticky at some point.
another thing i have noticed is that after i cock the hammer, and start sliding the bolt towards the barrell, it feels kind of “wobbly”, as the space between the bolt and the tunnel is more than it should be.
for a part like this i would have liked german tolerances of 1billionth of an inch, if you know what i mean…
i could ask a machinist to polish the inside of the tunnel, but even with very gentle and fine sanding, this will inevitably increase the gap further, don’t you agree?

I have the same experience. It could be a lot smoother, and quite a few of my bolt action rifles have a much smoother feel to it than the R3. I did not dismantle it like you have done, – and I may go down that road too one of these days.

That said, I’ve tried to push the bolt forward slowly with my finger on the back center of the bolt (not using the handle). It should move freely forward with no funny “scrubbing” sounds and no “stops” on it’s way forward…..
Mine doesn’t……
It’s like it travels in “sand” or worse, – and you can easily hear the sounds of friction. Also the bolt “stops” at intervals on it’s way forward and needs a little harder push to get beyond the “obstacle” before reaching the next……
This is not a smooth action by any means…….. 😉
