Q:

Condor acting up (not)

I filled the condor to 2800 psi and I was getting 850 psi or so for the first 20 shots and then the gun leveled off and starts shooting a pretty consistent 1120 psi or so. What is the cause of this? Could this be a problem with the tophat or is it time to send the gun in.

How much are you talking about wstith going with the hammer from Tony..is this someting that I can do myself with out to much trouble.

Personally I would do the .25 option as these guns are made to throw BIG gobs of lead I only shoot 29 and 32 grain Eun Jins with my. 22 barrel or 37 and 42 grain Eun Jins with my .25 barrel. The .20’s are pretty good but you will find yourself wanting to shoot past 100 yards and at that distance you need HEAVY!

Loctite that those grub screws down once you find the sweet spot. Remember keep her around 2700 psi, clean the crap out of the barrel and I find my 90 gram hammer from Tony really helped with shot consistancy.

It will take time for you to learn her sweet spots but once you dial her in she will be your Mistress and the other well always being good enough will just do the same thing over and over and become boring then you will go out to have fun with the Mistress. πŸ˜€

I am taking my Condor out to Nebraska tomorrow and handing her to him and beg to set the gun up and make it shoot darn well. I still find myself not understanding this whole tophat deal; I can’t get the theory behind it down.. I adjust the thing in increments today and I could not tell any real difference in the shooting, even when using the chrony. I think that Mike has worked on Lizzi long enough now that I trust Isabel in his hands for a day of shooting. Heck may fall in love with Isabel by the time I get home tomorrow… maybe I may just have to trade in my .20 cal barrel for a .25 cal barrel will I can still do it.. I probably should have gone that route in the first place since I want a real whacker.

Sounds good to me my friend and the pump idea will work for me.. i for got to get my tank filled so only have about 12 or so fills left lol we don’t want to run out of air.. I had her burping at 940 or so today with the .20 eun Jin’s… she is going to be a real whacker for sure… furry things sound fun..

Will see you Sunday make sure to bring your patience. We will have all day tons of air and lots of room to shoot. The gauge on the hand pump seems to wook quite well for reading fill pressure. When we got her running right. We can go down to the spillway and try to shoot something furry πŸ˜€ 😈 πŸ˜€

Ummm, i think i may have a problem…. 😳

Na, no problems, your just starting to fit right in with this bent bunch 😯

hey, we have an erotic poet here!! good for you dadwilson.

I also have an Airhog Condor (.22). Believe it or not you ‘ve helped me out! The other day I was tried 2,900, 2800, 2600 & 2500 and somehow I skipped 2700 (not patient enough). I just filled the tank to 2700 psi (I was using 2500 before) and ka-baam, the first 10 shots ranged from 1,003 to 994 w/Kodiaks. 9fps spread for 10 shots, at the lowest power setting, I ‘m happy! 5 of the shots were actually 999->997 back to back! Before with 2500 fill I was getting a range of 985 – 1005 for the first ~15 shots, about 20fps spread. It seems I may have cut that down to half. It’s something.. I ‘ll run another string of 10 (20 total on same fill) to see how much it drops. Hopefully I ‘m done fiddling with mine too.

Now that you have put everything into perspective, I am sure have the patience and desire to fondle this little honey for a while and see if I can get her to put out. I think if I caress the tophat for a while she will be begging to go off in good fashion. Patience is the key here as I see it. Now that Van has told me that the little lady likes a big load and how to properly handle her I will surely get her screaming to be fired.

Thats just it mate, if you spend some time with her now, future shooting will vbe very good.

You didn’t ever think you would get that girl into bed on the first date did you??!! A little wineing and dining first, then some fumbling in the back seat. Now you learning what she likes, and before you know it, you nailing her!!!

Ummm, i think i may have a problem…. 😳

Maybe my age is getting to me or my patience has worn thin on a long day that I have had. I just want the Condor set up to where I fill it will air. Take it to the hunt, put in a pellet and take my shot. Whether I hit my target or not, I don’t care. I just want the one shot to be reliable my friends. I want a go to gun for my hunting rig not a go to gun for the work shop. I do hope I get this figured out in the next couple of weeks, let the gun broke in proper and give me what I expect from a quality gun. If this does not happen, I am afraid this is one Condor listed on the classifieds. Let someone else take all the time and effort to turn it into what it is claimed to be.. πŸ˜•
At the moment I am happy with it as a few of the fellows and Van have given me some good pointers and tips to keep the thrill alive. It was shooting a smooth hard hitting 1120 fps with the light Crosman 14.3 .20.. We will see when I adjust that tophat and start slinging the Eun Jin down range and that will be the tale of the tape for me.. πŸ™‚

My biggest concern is, am I going to have to go through all of the set up very often. I hope not..Bare with me guys, as at least I am trying..

If you don’t have a feeler gauge or a way to verify the tophat gap, a penny is typically 0.060″ thick and a nickel is typically 0.075″ thick and two dimes are 0.10″ thick (US currency)… My factory set tophat (on a Talon) was 0.091″ and way too large…

If you have a Chrony you have just about all you need and can use a coin for reference or a known start point…

Once you get it right you’ll know! πŸ˜‰

Don’t get discouraged this is a great platform but you may need to get that tophat set properly again or send it back as the variables must be controlled with powerwheel setting, pellet type, and fill pressure to enjoy the gun.

Tony should have told you what pressure to fill your tank with and what power setting the gun likes and is consistent with. If not, give him a call. That’s one of the things he ‘s supposed to test and let you know.

I dont think that he got this gun from Tony… the wait was too long if I recall correctly…

DW, you are experiencing what just about every Condor owner has already experienced… The same question “why cant I just fill to 3000psi and shoot?” has been being asked since 2004 when the Condor came out. The ‘1/2’ turn you did on your Condor could very well be too far off for a 3000psi fill. Some folks have noticed with tophat settings that just a few hundredths of an inch can cause velocity fluctuations of 200fps or more.

Here is an excerpt of a post written some years back by a fellow on the old forum who knew a bit out the AF guns…..

“Let me tell you something you may not know, or have thought of. When the hammer strikes the tophat, and the tophat moves inward, only a fraction of that movement contributes to air entering the transfer tube, maybe as little as .005 to .006.

Now that we know that, and we realize the power of pressurized air, we can move forward. For example a difference of .002 can mean a lot when it comes to tophat adjustment. Look at this, my tophat set at .069, produced a velocity of 249 fps, while on the other hand, a setting of .071 produce a velocity of 997 fpe, unbelievable is it not. This was done using a 24″ barrel, a TimW hammer weight, JSBs .22, and a stock SS tank and valve. So what we see here is that there is a perfect balance, between the hammer weight, the valve spring and the air tube as well. So now anything (in terms of tophat setting), that exceeds the necessary open time is just wasting air. It also effects the velocity and consistancy, as the tank pressure decreases. I have come to believe that every gun is going to be different, just because of the many variables.”

I learned long ago that messing with the tophat isnt a ‘turn a couple twists and hope for the best’ kind of endeavor. Take some time with your gun…

Fill it up, set the PW to 10 or so, and start on the tophat… chrony a shot, see where your at… adjust, shoot… repeat… top off after every 4 or so shots… when you get the velocity you want from the fist shot… record the measurement of your tophat, store it somewhere safe, loctite the threads….. and from that point on, dont mess with it.

Thanks for the info my friend, I wished I would have found that earlier. I would imagine that I will be fiddling with the tophat a lttle more now and make sure I have it right..

Talked with Van today at Air Hog and everything has been taken care of. I should have followed the written directions. That would help wouldn’t it? The gun was set up for shooting the Eun Jin 24gr pellets at a fill pressure of 2700 psi and the power wheel left on 8.. I had to make a little adjustment to the tophat and after that everything was running smooth as could be. I went to run a chrony string and my batteries are dead.. More to follow at a later time..
