Considering switching to the dark side w/ researched ?’s
I’ve been shooting a Gamo Big Cat and other springers for a while now and I’m contemplating a Talon SS. I’m using it to remove pests within 35 yards (ie: squirrels and rats) and target shooting. I want to stay with .177 because the other guns we have are that, and I’ve had no problem with knock down power with them and I have a ton of pellets. I’m thinking the SS because it is potentially very quiet.
The questions I couldn’t find answers to:
What is average fps in a stock Talon SS (12″ barrel in .177)?
How many fills does one 80cft scuba yield?
Ideally, I’m looking for something as powerful as my Big Cat without the kick with better accuracy. Will the SS fit the bill?

Just trying to be realistic…
I shoot at a range with marked distances, no guessing on the shot yardage at all… I have seen quite a few “50 yard” shots that are really 35 yard distances… Never trust a man without a tape measure… 😆
I have been shooting Kodiaks 10.6 grains with the 18″ barrel and consistent 50 yard groups are not happening…
I’d like to see (in person) a good 40 yard group with a 12″ 0.177cal barrel… (That was the 35-40 yard system I was saying does not work too well…) 😕 Somehow I doubt your reaching out accurately to 45 yards with the 12″ 0.177 barrel… I’m guessing your using a 18″ or 24″ barrel for these shots…. 😉
I disagree with some of your .177 data at 35-40 yards you metion. Try baracuda 11 gr or kodiacs in this caliber I get 1/4″ groups at rest at 45 yards and have bagged large iguanas with one head shot. Eun jins are the next round that work well up to 50 yards or more accurately….this gun is designed to shoot pellets upwards of 10 gr in .177 from my experience if you want power and accuracy. anything lighter to me is a waste of time.
I think, after having difficulty with lighter 0.177 pellets at 50 yards with a 12″ and 18″ barrel, that .22cal is the way to go for decent distance and accuracy.
There was a funny post a way back about running the 0.177 cal in these rifles, it showed that the majority of people here think the 0.177 cal is a waste of time.
I set my rifle up to shoot 11 grain 0.117 cal between 25-35 yards with good accuracy and a high shot count. Well, when I try to shoot at 50 yards it gets a bit harder to post decent groups.
As much as I like the short distances and the high shot counts, I am beginning to believe that the 0.22 cal really brings out the best in these rifles. Using heavy pellets you can crank up the power and send lead out much further than the 0.177 cal and with greater accuracy as well.
I’m going to start getting some .22 cal barrels here soon, I realized all this after getting all the 0.177 barrels…
Live and learn I guess.
Good shootin Mike!
[/img]that’s the best of both worlds Mike, a meal and a hat all in one 8)
I’ve been giving it some thought and doing research, and I think I am gonna go .22 for all the reasons everyone has stated… now when is my birthday!
compared to what these guns are capable of, shooting a .177 at game at any distance is a lot like throwing feathers at them. Suer they have a flat trajectory at Springer ranges. But they slow down like they have a drag Chute tied to them at any distance. The Foot Pounds of Energy drops like a rock! I loved the .20 and still have a 12″ bbl. in that caliber. The .18″ .22 is deadly out to 80-100 yards.
Next? .25 on the way! 😀
We got “BIG” varmints here in Texas! Heck. some even come with Armor! 😯 As you can see in the Pic. It was through the sholder and out the ass! .22 Kodiak 21 grain.

I have a Gamo whisper in .177 which is similar power to the big cat. I pretty much gave up hunting with it because unless you get a good noggin shot with it the pellet goes straight thru and they run off and die. I know the talon will go straight thru. I would convert to the .22 if you are hunting, it will also go thru but with a bigger hole and will probably take some inards with it.
Shot springers for a long time -been thru most common walmart guns –
and the Gamo guns of course-at one point in time had a Shadow 1000
that I was seriously accurate with. – then got the itch for fixed barrel shooting – Had a Rws 48 and a B-21- yes even heavier recoil and such but I managed to be very accurate with those as well… On comes my first PCP- I used a vacation day for the delivery -woke up early made me and my girlfriend breakfast ran my doggies around…Ding Dong-burned up my house shoes on the way to the door 😆 …. My .177 SS is KickAss- and I am pretty Kick ass with it so … If you enjoy shooting as much as I do -then the SS may be for you. As far as maintaining the SS -NO PETROL- ANYWHERE— DIVERS SEAL SAVER – in dropper bottle form- works really well….Learn your gun and shoot it alot – use a good measure of care when workingonit (barrel swaps and such)- check the valve hat set screws (mine is set to where I feel is perfect -blue locktitedem and forgatem)and you could have one very FUN TO SHOOT ALOT TALON SS. kodiaks, crosman premiers 10.5s, Beeman FTSs ——-JSBs 8.4s and 10.2s as long as they are not all mushed-truely jsbs are just really soft- but an excellent pellet. I almost wann say dont get one so youll miss out —edit–if you are a shooter you can find an SS in .177 cal to be enjoyable- I am- and squirrels at 40 yards are no match for a 10.6 kodiak leaving the barrel at even a modest 880 or so – on target. — not gonna lie– I shoot .20 cal as well- the 14.3 premier is astonishing at 60 yards — —learn your fill pressures and set the PW leave it shoot some strings thru your new crony and enjoy your .177 SS…
Thanks for the feedback. I shoot Crosman Premier hollow points (7.9 gr) and Predators (8 or so gr) and hopefully would continue to shoot them in the new rifle. I will never get a chance to shoot more then 45 yards… if I can dial it in to those pellets at 35 yards, I would be stoked. I am shooting them now in the Gamo rifles I have and they are quite accurate with decent groups.
35-40 yards with the 12″ 0.177 cal will be a bit difficult. If your running high velocity with heavy pellets (more than 15 grains) yet staying under the SOS you may get some good accuracy at these distances with the short barrel, but the 18″ will make things much easier.

For what it’s worth, a .22 will geve more shots simply because it is more efficieht in a PCP.
Kill Squirrels at 40 yards? Oh Hell Yes. 60 yards too!
I was an RWS springer fan for years. Bought my first AF PCP and never looked back. All springers have been sold!
Well you picked the right one to start out with. There seems to be more 22’s and larger ones here. These are shooting platforms, with the ability to be adjusted for different shooting situations. The power plant is adjustable and they are accurate guns.
I have a pump and a tank. I pumped up the bottle from empty before I got the scuba bottle. None of us let the tank, AF tank, get too empty before we go back and top it off. Thats what I do with my scuba bottle. If you were just target practiing you could let it get lower than 2000. Its kinda like having a hot rod, You always know you can go fast, even though you don’t go fast.
There’s a few trick in here for making a talon ss quieter than it already is. I did the o-ring/spring one in references and it did improve it.
I don’t have a chrono, but reports are between 800-900 with lead.
Using the calculator on the Airhog.com site, using an 80cuft tank with a fill pressure of 3000psi, I can fill the AF tank 23 times assuming I fill it to 2800 psi and refill it at 2600psi. Do those numbers seem accurate?
I guess my concern is whether the AF in .177 w/ stock 12″ barrel can take out a squirrel at 35-40 yds. Obviously, it will be more accurate then the Gamo, thereby increasing it’s lethality. I would love consistant head shots with Predators and CPHP’s…

you will never look back. I had .177’s for years, alot of dead squirrels. The difference is that with a .22 they rarely move an inch. whith .177 I had alot of floppers and jumpers, most dead but not right where I shot them. If you want dead in your tracks dead .22
