Conversion

I do a ton of spearfishing. Been doing that for years. Basically, like many of us, I have too many hobbies. Currently in the process of building 2 spearguns, one for reef spearfishing and one for large blue water fish. Anyway, here in Japan, the current yen rate is about 89 to the dollar. So,, stuff is pretty expensive in the economy right now. I was here back in 92′ and the yen rate was about 127. The current economy sucks for Americans right now, great if you are Japanese and needing to buy US Dollars though. Back to the airgun stuff though, I will probably just buy the first “shadow ops” rifle for $138 and just leave it at that. Other modifications could easily push this one into the $800 range quickly. I think I can get a lot more real rifle stuff when I return to the states. If I had access to my own machine shop I might consider making specific parts for this to beef it up. Like I said, It can be made be to push approx 700fps, but with great expense. Not really sure if the cost to benefit ratio works out in my favor though.

The point of the whole Airsoft thing is being able to actually take it out and have real scenarios and military training exercises, shooting at each other, like paintball. You Definitely can not do that with a 1000fps pellet gun. (I guess you could but …) It is nice however, to have enough fps so that the person on the other end knows that they have been hit, but not have any serious injuries. (I guarantee that those little BB’s still sting.) Now, when I get back to the states and actually have the need for a pest control device, then I will opt to finally trick out my Talon SS at home. Try to put yourself in my position whereas you are shipped off to a place that you have your air rifles stripped from you and know that you aren’t going to be able to use them again for 4 years. I have to take up some other hobby. This is as constructive as I can find here.

I think that is where I was making my mistake. I was comparing .22 cal to the .25 gm.

Weights are totally off. The pellet is Much more. So, If I was able to fire a .24 cal pellet in the airsoft shooting 6mm (.24) 650fps with .25gm BB’s, what would that translate to for the pellet?

It is illegal to have or ship in a pcp here to japan. So, I am stuck with Airsoft for now.[u]

I also really like the fact that they are a bolt action and it has the magazine feed with 30 capacity. Granted, the mag makes no difference if I am able to convert it somehow to shoot an oblong pellet as opposed to the round BB’s.

This is true, I am in Japan. The airsoft community is pretty large here., however, I am returning to the States soon and would like to continue my interest in the air rifle arena. After doing a little research, I have found that the first rifle that I posted , the Type 96 sniper rifle, comes stock at about 450fps, however, with several internal upgrades can be pushed into the arena of 650-700fps for a Bolt Action, Magazine fed, 6mm projectile rifle. You can’t tell me that that is shabby. My only interest here would to be able to convert it to shoot real projectile type pellets instead of the round plastic BBs. I have found some aluminum BB’s that would offer more reliability and consistency, but having a more aerodynamic projectile would increase everything greatly. They used to make an older projectile called the Blade Bullet that would work well I think but they are almost impossible to find. My interest is in all types of rifles, especially the powered air type, but, however, as stated before, an impossibility for me right now due to restrictions, so I have to put my interest into what is available. As I said earlier though, these Type 96 spring sniper rifles do offer some promise, but putting some proper thought into them could make them unbelievable don’t you think?
