Cricket 25 Cal Shot String
25 cal Cricket using JSB exact kings 25.4 pellets. Starting at 290 and ending at 120. Using nitrogen and temperature was around a brutally cold 50 degrees today (that’s cold here in Florida!). 😯
Add 5 more shots in the first two strings due to errors. I guess you can say the Cricket puts out. And at 55 yards can’t miss 1/2″ to 1″ targets all day long. Going to try 75 yards next weekend.

The first & second strings have 32 shots each.

Now guys, I have tried to imagine how the clamps are positioned here but my feeble gray matter between my ears just could not quite figure it out in the clear.
Would anyone please show a photo or a diagram of how this thing looks like? I am very interested to see the barrel and scope rail tie up and the band and air tube on the other hand.

AA rifles have a flaw. The barrel if bumped will rotate the barrel band where it clamps to the fill end of the tube and stay rotated. I have a A400 that does this if the barrel is bumped. This is NOT a product of cantilevered barrels, this is product of bad band design.
On my newer USFT (which has about 21″ of cantilevered barrel) if I bump the muzzle it returns to where it is supposed to be since the band is not in contact with the barrel. Granted if you bump it hard enough to bend the barrel you’re screwed (which would hold true for most ANY barrel).
Barrels are actually pretty bendy, they are not hardened, they are actually relatively soft for steel. I can move my USFT barrel 1/8″ or more to each side fairly easily and it will not effect accuracy or point of impact at all.
Barrels would not do well in a situation where they are used to prevent an airtube from bending. Nor would the EdGun/Cricket scope rails (there is a thread that shows a badly bent rail).
Some rifles that have been converted to bullpups that have thin airtubes and are clamped EXACTLY like the Cricket have had accuracy issues with pressure changes. These same rifles would have issues if the barrel band is clamped around the airtube without any play.
I can sum this up real easy:
IF a barrel could stop the airtube from bending then a tight barrel band would not cause poi changes with pressure.
My second USFT has a 22″ cantilevered airtube that is tight banded to a 22″ cantilever of barrel. If air tubes always effected banded cantilevered barrels then my USFT would have issues. Fill pressure does not effect poi AT ALL on this rifle because the air tube walls are super thick…
I agree with you on the elegance and sturdiness of the Cricket/Matador (I am certainly not trying to take anything away from these awesome airguns), the design DOES help, but air tube wall thickness is what it is ALL about. 😉

I was trying to understand and I think I have it now. Your explanation make sense to me. The scope and barrel are ALWAYS parallel to each other regardless of the air tube expanding and contracting. This is true because they are locked together via the mounting system as opposed to the way a scope is mounted on a breech and not directly on the barrel. Any movement of the barrel will not be transferred exactly to the scope.
I could understand where this design may be superior to traditional set ups. However, the proof is in the real accuracy. Daystates, FX and others with scopes mounted on breech are very accurate. However, it the barrel are bumped or if the barrels are in direct contact with the air tube, they can affect point of impact and not necessarily accuracy.

I still don’t ascribe to your assertion, and I don’t think I have it wrong. Sorry. No offense, but I’m sticking to my theory. I have an S410 that has the issues I’ve described earlier, and the diagnosis after much, much testing reflected exactly those issues.
If you can, try intentionally bumping the barrel on a conventional gun like an Air Arms S410 or Daystate. Then try it on a Cricket. Chances are, POI will shift on the two former guns.
By the way, I never stated about the problems with the long version of the Edgun and Cricket. They are the same in design as the standard Cricket and the Edgun R2 at least. I only referred to traditionally-designed rifles.
You have it mixed up…
It’s NOT the clamp between the airtube and the barrel that makes things move or the shroud touching the airtube (on the Cricket the air tube and barrel are clamped by TWO bands, on Daystates the shroud touches the barrel and is also banded) NONE of these rifles have issues.
On the long versions of the Cricket and EdGun bullpups there is a considerable length of barrel that stick out past the two airtube/barrel clamps. By your “theory” these designs will have issues, they don’t.
It’s THIN air tubes that are clamped by a band or touch the shroud or barrel that cause issues.
What you need to understand is that if the airtube causes any movement of the rail the scope follows along. The two clamps are close to the muzzle if you discount the silencer. Further, since the barrel or shroud is not touching the tube at all, it is unaffected by it at all. On traditional PCPs, if the barrel/shroud moves via the airtube or barrel band, it moves also. And since the barrel is held at the juncture on the breech, the scope doesn’t. In my opinion, the Cricket’s and Edgun R2’s design is superior.
Typically air tube to barrel interference is when they are banded together like on the Cricket.
OBVIOUSLY they have different holes… 🙄 If they were in the same hole how exactly would that work? 😕 Both the barrel and the air tube are clamped by the same piece of metal. This is what usually causes issues with air guns that have THIN tubes for air storage.
The EdGun was not designed to have the shroud contact the air tube. The cause of this has yet to be fully determined, they don’t leave the factory like that, but 99% of those who have tried to fix it properly have easily done so.
The Daystate’s certainly don’t have accuracy issues with accuracy, likely because they use thick air tubes.
I am WELL aware that not all barrels are free floated, that is EXACTLY what I pointed out about the Cricket… 🙄 😕

Having a band that clamps at the barrel and the air tube is usually a no no.
I don’t know of any air gun where the barrel touches the air tube (I should add, on purpose). 😯
Yes the band also clamps the tube, but it has its separate hole so when it contracts or expands, it doesn’t interfere with the barrel because the barrel is locked tightly in its own hole.
I’ve read some Edgun R3 owners complaining about the shrouds touching the air tube. My older Air Arms S410’s shroud comes into contact at the last three inches at the breech end. I’ve seen A Daysate Mk4is’s shroud also contact a barrel. Not all guns’ barrel is free floated.

Yep, I’ve been filling to 4300 psi or 300 BAR but I read somewhere that others are filling to 220 BAR with similar results. I guess I’m just wasting air or nitrogen in my case. 😀
