Q:

Cricket stocks, son of a beech!

What’s up with the beech stocks from Kalibrgun? I see there is a newish imported one from WWAG in the for sale section with what looks like a beech stock..
My question is with the discontinuation of the WST stock did they also switch the Bulldog stock from walnut to beach or is it a cheaper option now?

LOL……………….

Well at least you didn’t say “beach”.

Not sure what my Edgun stock is made from but it doesn’t look like any walnut i’ve seen in North America (and i’ve seen a LOT of fucking walnut)… šŸ˜•

Would have to see some really close pictures of the grain to figure out what kind of wood it really is.

Beech is not a bad wood, beats poplar which is it’s equivalent here in the states. 😔

True! Not to be compared to ie Air Arms and Minelli stocks.

The quality of the wood on the high end pups are pretty much crap when considering the price of the package. A few rare exceptions.

That ukulele is fantastic. Excellent work! I play guitar and a little lele. However, I play a cheapie i bought from Craigslist.

Thanks for sharing,

Gabe

When I started building Ukuleles I developed a love for Koa and the romance began. Now, I have tons of instrument grade premium curly Koa that I use to build my Ukuleles (GKU Ukuleles). I bought more than a lifetime supply to build with and I’m glad I did. Its market has varied over the years and has become very costly. A board foot ranges anywhere between$ 80-$450 a board foot, yes more than Ebony.

Thought of making and selling Curly Koa gun stocks, but I was told that the market for them was slow. It would also be at a cost that would be more than the gun itself. If not I’m looking to lose a bit of money on it knowing from making one stock I could get enough Koa to build about 5 Ukuleles at $3,000-$7,000 each. Maybe someday I’ll make one for my Cricket ?

Of course there are shortages in walnut; the squirrels are eating the seeds/nuts so there will be fewer of us with pretty walnut stocks shooting them šŸ˜› :confusedn: Oh yes, they’re always plotting… always.

At least no one is using American Beech (unstable, cracks); European Beech is not walnut, but a decent wood. http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/european-beech/

Walnuts are easy to plant and crop in groves and there are a bunch of useful species. Here, in Virginia, USA, Black Walnut is used a lot. http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/black-walnut/

It grows everywhere here. I just bought a 11 foot/3.4m x 5 inch/13cm x 10 inch/25cm rough-cut Black Walnut board for under $60.00; it should supply enough usable material for at least four stocks, including a custom for the Edgun. In general, walnuts (Juglans) are faster growing than beech (Fagus). With the better looking wood, walnuts are a better choice all around. If the supply is dwindling, someone would do well to plant walnuts, even if it’s for the next generation. That’s kinda the rub; people are usually too selfish to plant a crop that takes decades.

We have tons of walnuts largely because squirrels are hunted hard. If you have very few of the stinkin’, thieving rodents, they have more nuts than they can eat or store in caches. So, they bury them to eat later. Many buried nuts are not found and sprout, like, in my tomatoes, or corn, or window boxes šŸ‘æ

Id be willing to bet my leftie that these two are walnut not beech

The other one is not a clear pic and I would need to see a close up of the grain.
Heres a few I have revived to show you a range of different walnut used, this variety used for Edgun and kalibrgun stocks that can often look like other timber. These are all walnut.

There are no “excuses” made by me towards the Edgun brand, I was simply stating that maybe if both companies have received beech stocks then maybe its a supplier problem. Ed has stated himself when his prices over the cricket were questioned that his stocks are of better grade than what Kalibrgun use. The obvious fact alone that he said there was a mistake and send apology gifts says to me that this is not the norm.
Lets see someone contact Kalibrgun and tell them there stocks are beech and see their reply.. My guess it would go something along the lines of “well of coarse they are,.. we ordered them in beech!?”
I make no excuses for Ed’s actions I was simply stating my opinion.
As an Edgun importer myself I would be very unhappy to receive a beech stock even at a discounted rate if that was what was happening.. I could not sell a high end item with anything less than the best furniture and would not expect as a customer myself to get beech on a Edgun or Cricket.

Any loyalties I have toward Edgun are only due to owning all the brands and my personal experience with them all.
My Edgun single shot R3 still reins superior over all others Ive owned or currently own. (40+ PCPs)
I have no intention of protecting a particular brand or person that it out to cheat anyone. I know Ed personally and I trust this is not the case here.

I would be nice to hear Ed’s explanation of the situation? Are you using beach stocks for the rubber coated black stocks? Was this a simple mix up or is there a market you are supplying beech stocks to now?

Why did i expect anything diffent excuses for lack of walnut ect now it involves the edgun brand   You started the thread slating a company for rising prices using cheaper wood whats diffrence now it involves edgun ???? Ash jackaman is a well respected stock maker in the uk its his beech stock in the picks what more u want a chunk cut off to be anylsed be real edd sent him free gifts valves ect as a sorry once he realised who it was who got the beech stock and blamed one of hs workers fr sending it him the pics are beech any one can see walnut dosnt have straight lines or rings round the grip for grain !atvb dave

All of those stocks posted are walnut not beech.. just the lighter wood not heart..
I dont think any manufacturer or retailer has the intention of “ripping you off”, if indeed Edgun are supplying stocks in beech as we know Kalibrgun are, it could be the case that their stock makers (they both use the same place) are having trouble getting enough walnut timber to meet the new higher demand..
If this is indeed the case then Im sure the stock maker doesn’t charge the PCP manufacturer the same price for beech as walnut so it would be expected that this discount be forwarded onto the end customer receiving a lesser grade of timber on their pcp.
Personally Id opt not to take a beech stock at all, with the price of these high end PCPs being harder and harder to justify comparing to a new powder burner which often use better grades of timber and certainly higher specs of steel that cost in most cases double what PCP materials cost yet the end product is less than half the cost.
Our laws require us to have a firearms licence for a pcp so they are not a popular item since you can also buy a powder burner once you have this licence.. Personally It is all the little things like a walnut stock and match triggers that help me to convince myself its worth it but the way things are going recently I would have a hard time parting with any cash for a new PCP over say a SAKO Quad .22lr which in some cases are even cheaper to shoot than a PCP.

Certainly is mate so not just a one off seems to be the current trend of shafting the consumer from all or most bullpup suppliers with more cost cutting but price hiking which i find ironic when u read comments made on the subject of synthetic stocks and how only quality items will be used like u say wingman the price should be dropped 300 not upped 300 wonder how many out there actually dont realise theyve been shafted with beech stocks too …… Any how the whole subject has somewhat helped me and gave me the push needed to just build my own bullpup at my own specs cal ect and save a grand in tne proccess and the fullfilnent of achieving my own working pup even if a base gun as been used Dave G

Beech?
