Q:

Custom aluminum hammer spring knob for my Cricket

Here’s the custom aluminum knob that I ordered from Steve at TAG. I actually got it almost a couple of weeks ago. I just didn’t install it onto the gun yet. Thanks Steve!

The black cover is the old cocking knob cover that was on my spare Condor breech knob. I purposely put it on so that the black color matches the color scheme of the Cricket. It fits perfectly and the open end of the cover cuts off exactly at the last thread. I heated the cover to shrink it a bit before fitting it onto the knurled part of the knob. It now fits very snuggly.

Iยดm sure I will not shorten the spring ๐Ÿ˜† I don’t know why is not done spring bulding-in in the knob…. thus spring would go deeper into knob ๐Ÿ’ก
In case of original plastic knob with two holes is spring approx. 5mm inside the knob!

quote octavius:

I have already install the knob from Steve and minimal speed what is possible to set is 902fl/s 15.9grain JSB Exact.
Go to lower is no possible because the knob holds only for two thread right now.
I don’t know if is not better made a longer thread or bulding-in (encasement) for spring???

What about shortening the spring if it is too far out?

Or adding a spacer if it is too far in? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Based on our friend Octavious’s remarks about only two threads being accessed, it doesn’t seem wise to shell out $40+ bucks!

Is there any other way to give that spring support?

I haven’t considered an alternative to the knob and wondered if the existing spring cover can be converted in any way to get that support rod in place. It doesn’t seem the rod would need to be firmly attached, just in place and preventing eventual spring damage from bending and torquing.

I sure hope not. ๐Ÿ˜†

“Any of you guys handled Steve’s knob”

Am asking because original plastic knob has hole inside, where spring is 5mm into the plastic. Aluminum has no hole and spring will have more pretension???

I wonder if Steve made any relief on the length of his knob to allow for that?

Any of you guys handled Steve’s knob, and know the answer?

He’s awefully proud of his knob, pricewise. I might see if my hardware store has any lag bolts that would fit. I could easily adjust that with a small pipe wrench that I always carry in my pocket.

Thoughts?

Kindest regards…

How many minimal ft/s is able to set with this aluminum knob?

I agree with spinj. I did not buy for “fine tuning” For me if enough 262m.s for JSB Jumbo Heavy and 272m.s for JSB Jumbo.
But main interest was eliminated twang from the spring.

Thanks Spinj for conatact to Steve. My knob is on way to me right now ๐Ÿ˜† Iยดm very happy and Iยดm curious if vanish spring twang ๐Ÿ’ก
Steve is serious & helpful guy.

No problem, Octavius. Yes, the guide on the knob eliminated the twang on my Cricket, especially when cocking it.

I didn’t get the knob for velocity adjustments. Steve also told me the same thing he told you guys. I got it because it had a spring guide. With the guide, spring twang is eliminated. Plus, the knurled portion of the knob makes it easier to remove or insert. It is also aluminum.

What speed is default on the cricket from factory?

quote SECoda:

What are you going to do with the knobs? After talking to Bori at TG I decided not to order one. He convinced me you really need to get to the regulator to do any significant velocity changes.

Boris told me the same thing. He believes the Cricket should be left alone.

That’s fine for most shooters, but not the fanatics on this forum, where a 55 fps variation can be the difference between maximum accuracy, or adequate accuracy.

Many of the shooters on the TAG are a breed apart. I’m going to get the knob. It’s a bit pricy, but our motto is “Let no adjustment go untouched”….

Of course you need to adjust the reg if you are looking for consistent shoot at other speed then delivered. Anyone have a spare shroud to sell?

Have you checked consistency at those extremes?
