Dressing my new CORSAIR (short story with pics)

Received my .308 Corsair the other day from Randy and i was very excited to see that brown box sitting in the living room awaiting my arrival from work. Of course i could no open the box until i FULLY explained to my wife “WHY” i bought another BB GUN….lol. Ok, just joking guys.

After opening the box then removing the stock and the rest of the rifle, i was surprised at how light the receiver/air tube/barrel assembly actually was. I was supposed to weight it but i got so excited about putting the gun together, i totally forgot. Since i just received the gun, my plan was to install the upper into the QB stock that i originally had on my Jack Haley .32 and to put the factory QB78 stock on the JH32. I won’t bore you guys with too many words and i will do what i like, i will tell the story with pictures.

Next up is a pic of the GLASS for the Corsair:

Being that i’ve had a few QB guns, i have a lot of spare parts. Here, i opted to install the bigger aftermarket bolt handle:

Next, i went through the trigger assembly. Actually, i have 2 extra fully assembled and tuned trigger assemblies. The internals were already polished and tuned so i simply swapped the Corsair internals and made all necessary adjustments. No, as of tonight i did not use my trigger pull gauge to see what the pull weight is but again, what i’ve done so far is just beggining phase before i take it out and test it. All other adjustments will be made later.

Next was to fit the Corsair to the Richards Micro fit stock. No big deal hear at all. Just slid the action in and VOILA!:

Next up was to install the Scope onto the receiver. I have a ton of scope rings and it was simply a matter of finding a good set of MEDIUM scope rings for the SIMMONS 6-21 MD scope:

Last but not least, i installed the scope and made all the final adjustments to the rings and scope to get the cross hairs to my liking. The final product was:

YEP.

As nicely machined as that gun is…….That is probably gonna be the guns only fault.

Maybe i’ll call Randy about it.

Other than that…….i really like the rest of the gun and what it can do.

Yeah, Randy posted on his forum that the gun cannot be taken apart. Most likely the barrel is epoxied to the receiver. And you are right there is a little screw under the barrel that seems to be holding everything in together. But to get to it one needs to take the barrel out – which is bonded in. If you look closely the glue residue is evident, looks like epoxy to me.

The valve return spring, yes, it flies off from the valve on low pressures to the from of the air tube and then you need to take the air tube off to fix it. That is a bad design period. They copied in some way what DAQ does, but he has a retainer of the valve return spring inside the air cylinder.. In a way that is smart design because one does not any special tools to get to the insides of the valve, you pop the air tube out and have fun with the valve return spring hardness 🙂 But on the Corsair there is nothing that is holding the valve spring… just high pressure air above 3000psi.

So what we basically have now is a none serviceable rifle where the breech and the barrel are glued together and valve return spring is just riding against the pressure of the air tube.

Yeah, basically the gun is what it is. That is probably the way they designed it.

I’m not a machinist but i wish i was. That mainspring MOVING has caused me problems twice in the field cause i shot the gun too many times. Both times i had to take it apart in the field and i was STEAMING.

I’m just gonna keep my mouth closed though cause everytime i opened, i taste foot……….LOL. Was gonna call randy about it but hell, what can they do? I’m not mailing my gun back. But regardless of what he sais, that return spring needs to be captured…..period. If you run TOO LOW on PSI, the mainspring is strong enough to push the valve stem into the return spring and move it upwards which is gonna drastically change your air consumption.

My solution so far is to take only 3 shot from a full fill and then REFILL the gun back up.

yep, there seems to be a little screw under the barrel, but to get to it I need to get the barrel out, and it seems to be epoxy-ed to the receiver 🙂 I will be using more heat to get the barrel out, so far it does not come out.

Haley has that little screw going through the loading part of the barrel so things are easily taken apart, But they too bond the barrels to the receiver that they don’t come out. So far only DAQ’s are easy to take apart without hammering 🙂 he sure builds them best of all that I have seen. Although JH trigger is very nice for a one stage trigger that is..

But if ya reread my original statement, i said that it was a pull to cock design like most current guns.

It is not a push pull like the chinese qb.

Also AA, I have not taken my receiver apart from the air tube as of yet but, i would assume that like the QB22/177, once you remove the allen screw from holding down the barrel, there is a screw under the barrel trough. But i’m not sure about this particular gun as i have not gone that far yet. I would leave well enough alone. When i see lock tite around the transfer port, i get worried. Non of my other guns has locktite around the transfer port so i have no idea what Randy and his machinist had in mind.

Riverside, that 2 position hammer striker is a good idea. 2 levels of power all in the stroke of the cocking position. NICE!

Might end up machining another slot into the bottom of my hammer to make my gun a 2 power level gun. EASY!

Locktite is holding the gun together, I suppose heat, but if there is some kind of chemical, I would check that first.

I got one of these 357’s too… Neat little toy.. which I decided to take apart. But I am a little stuck in removing the barrel and separating the upper… Any idea what I don’t see? Or is the barrel being epoxied to the receiver? Looks to me like allen screws has to be under the barrel that is holding everything together.. Don’t know I never opened QB’s before. Haley is somewhat different.


So far all looks good, trigger pull is very hard, all parts machined nicely, air tube could have been beefier, and valve body could have been made from brass or steel in my opinion but for what it is it is ok… Once I take it fully apart I will show more pics of the internals. I like the mat finish on the gun, very durable..

Anyway folks if you have an idea how to undo the last bits on her would be much appreciated..

here is a quick shot
the top is the standard QB set up
bottom is a two position striker from a Crosman based Dart gun
I didnt dig up the rear cap with guide and the spring but note the twin engagement points at the rear of the striker
these are the way to go in my opinion as I detest the Crosman 160 striker assembly and trigger group

Well, most of them are B. Just cut a second slot under the hammer for the trigger sear to grab and VOILA….2 power levels.

Just funny that you said that cause that was the first thing i thought of with the corsair. Making it a seperate cocking gun just like my haley and now my Dragon slayer. I hated that lever on the DS. So i kept the lever but i only use it to load the gun. Then i can cock it seperately just like my HALEY.

Cool I look forward to the pics. And yeah, don’t remember what the hammer actually looks like on the QB but i got tons of pics of them cause i’ve had about 3 QB’s…lol.

Why more airguns don’t have this feature designed into them I don’t know. So simple and easy to do (so it would seem). I’m going to start using the low-power setting more often when target shooting with my 909 (RB going around 730-750fps with about a 2200?psi fill).

with the stock QB striker assembly I dont think it will be easy to go to a two position system
further the reason behind the use of the Tanquilzer gun assembly is due to the striker being much heavier and stronger sprung plus I do like side cocker guns as it provides an additional safety
note the DAQs and Haley guns pretty much all use manual cocking of the striker due to the heavier springs involved.
I want to try and increase my valve duration as much as possible
dont care much about shot count on the one I am building

I will dig up one of the 2 position striker assemblys over the next day and post you some pix here in contrast to the QB assembly
