Q:

Edgun 1862 Chrony String

Motivated by recent chrony discussions (after I had placed an order for the standard Chrony) I went ahead and ordered a Combro. It showed up yesterday and I put it to work.

First was a couple of 22xx variants – boy was I dissapointed in the mid 380’s from the 2250XT. Time for some valve work there…

Then decided to have some fun and pulled out the Edgun. Was again surprised by the numbers.

I will be adding to this post as I test with different Chronys and power adjustments, with both 18.1’s and 15.9 JSB’s. I’ve already given up on the CP’s – groups won’t hold past 20y in mine. Also going test the heavier JSB’s when I make my next pellet order.

This is new ground for me but the string looks pretty good, I think. Your thoughts are welcome.

But I hear it also loves to eat JSB 15.8 grain pellets… It should be the same type of lead between these two so I’m guessing that switching between JSB 18.1 and JSB 15.8 grain pellets would not cause any accuracy problems due to different kinds of lead deposits in the barrel. Is my assumption correct or should I just stick with one of these?

Just in case, guys, keep in mind that if you change the pellets you can have much worse accuracy at the same gun for a while. The poin is in different lead and mixtures in it in different pellets, so I would not recomend you do it often, if you choose the pellets you like — keep your gun fed with them 🙂

NJ, as I was typing those words I was thinking it was your post. I was too lazy to go and double check 😳 That was some valuable info.

Very useful info noodles! I won’t worry so much about fps once my Edgun arrives now that I see what is going on. As long as it’s consistent, efficient, and accurate as f@ck I’ll be a very happy camper.

When you get a chance, how about shooting your Edgun using both the Combro and the F1?

Mount the combro and shoot over the F1… sounds like a plan!
I think I’m gonna be stuck at work for a while so tonights’ plan might be on hold.

I like my Combro, I don’t have a regular chronograph. I wish that I knew some one that did. I am beginning to think that the wide variations in MV that different Edgun owners have posted is due to using different makes of chronys.

Can’t beat that bean…..

wow, 70 shots, how many bars did you end up with

I was just a hair over 100bar on shot 75. That’s why I kept going. Was just at 100 on shot 78.

If I get out of work at a decent time tonight I will be doing another 80 shots over the F1 Chrony for comparison. If we get a decent day this week I’ll shoot groups over the chrony. No point in doing that at 19.1y in my basement. Probably start at 130bar and work down until I see significant POI shift at 45 and 60y. I have to find an angle on Pop’s land to shoot at 100y too. That could take some time if the rain doesn’t let up He’s building a house and the good angles all crisscross the constuction site. It’s been muddy as hell!

I’m going to have to pick some up to test.I have had them group better out of a few rifles at 100yds than at 40yds 😯

At 19.1 yards (my basement range) POI was noticably different than either of the JSB’s but the groups are nearly as tight (didn’t really measure them). At 30y it was the difference between 10 shots in a nickle size group vs 9 shots a quarter didn’t quite cover plus a ‘flyer’. I stopped there because the JSB’s cost less anyway (or they did the last time I made a big pellet order).

I did try them at 45y and 60y the day I made it to Pop’s land… I was missing 1.5 inch targets. Got tired of re-sighting the scope and decided to stick with the JSB’s Then proceeded to shoot a .57 inch 5 shot group at 60y with the 18.1’s.

On the other hand – My talon does not like JSB’s nearly as well as the CP’s.

How bad were your CP groups?

I’ve got a brand new F1 sitting in the garage that I’ll be testing with tonight if the lighting situation works out. 100% flouresent in the basement right now. I’ll have to see if I can even find a couple regular light bulbs 😆
