Q:

Edgun 30 Cal Pellet Clipping and THE FIX – pic heavy

OK. guys.. Go easy on me !!!! I am by far NOT a Professional Machinist…. Just a half ass Hack 😯

Part 1 : Upon discovering the pellet clipping problem after delivery of my R3 30 cal… At 7pm Friday Night…. I was on a mission !!!
So I first made a “Moderator Nut” removal tool….

Part 2: Early Saturday morning I had the Inspiration to modify the above to add an “Alignment Rod”.
The idea was to have a “Stepped” rod that fit Snugly into the Barrel while at the same time holding the moderator in alignment… All while being able to tighten the “Moderator Nut”……. Piece of Cake… πŸ™„ πŸ™„ πŸ™„ πŸ™„ πŸ™„
(and not damage to barrel and Crown)

The idea was to hold the Moderator in line with the Barrel while “SLOWLY” snugging down the “Moderator Nut”. This was a slow process to turn the nut 1/8 at a time … Remove the tool, Then check for alignment and then Repeat until the nut was Tight.

After Reassembly of the the gun. I did a final check with the alignment tool to ensure that nothing had shifted. I am happy to say I accomplished this on the first try. The rod slid in the moderator and snugly eased in the the Barrel. ( I did my best to hold less then 0.001 tolerance on the Barrel alignment Rod fit and then stepped it up to fit the Moderator hole.

This was what the moderator looked like after 20 shots… I think it worked πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

And for “Big Eddie’s” Reward,… I topped him off with a nice piece of Glass…….

NOW i bet you guys want Chrono Strings … DB Reading…. Accuracy testing…… I AM TIRED AND HUNGRY … MORE TO FOLLOW

Mark…

Happy Edgun Owner…..

…. And Yes O.G… We will talk later …. πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

Yep, it’s not heated though, but around here that isn’t a big deal…

One range is 43 and the other is 54 if I stretch it. It’s amazing just how few people actually accept my invitation to come and shoot. I have found it invaluable in figuring out if it’s the gun or me for competition shooting.

ok, I thought I rotated the moderator to a new position and nothing changed. figured i had to completely remove large moderator and figure out if there was a seating issue, burr, or something getting this out of alignment. turns out when i rotated the moderator, i was turning the barrel as well. when i went to remove the moderator nut, the whole barrel assembly came out. anyone else have that problem?

I am reluctant to put the barrel in a vise and try and break the nut loose, so I am looking for suggestions.

happy holidays.

He lives in a mobile home. A “Triple-Long”. He got a good price on it, used, from an outfit that was trying out a mobile home motel concept!

There are nerds amongst us 😯 I am not saying that’s a bad thing.

The new moderators for the .30’s is properly called in mechanical term “eccentric” it is not centered to the barrels bore. If it was centered as the .22 and .25’s are it would be considered “concentric”. Where it can rotate 360 degrees and still be centered. Because the 30’s have an eccentric moderator it does not rotate around the center axes. It in layman’s terms would “wobble” as it is rotated around the barrel. Therefore it would intrude into the flight path of a pellet if not directly lined up with the center of the barrel. Hope I explained so you can understand without a drawing. 😐

thanks for the reply. but the eccentric center of rotation should be the same axis as the concentric barrel because the barrel protrudes through an opening in the moderator. that’s what I am trying to figure out.

Guess he doesent test fire these before boxing.
Nice reading guys.

I know it makes little cense. Just in case. Rotate that moderator from its 7 o clock position to 6 o clock. Then retighten the nut and see if it still clips. Perhaps the base casting is shaped like a slight wedge and not flat. Good luck 😎

Either I am as cock-eyed as you are, or that hole is way left of center!!!

Doesn’t look right does it? I hope someone intelligent responds. That hole has me very curious!

I have a question.

I got my 12mm moderator nut loose, and started thinking about which way to rotate the moderator to get clearance. I didn’t do a complete removal of the moderator nut, but if the tolerance of the moderator around the barrel is small, and the baffle holes are aligned correctly to the barrel opening, why would rotating the moderator have any affect? What am i missing?

Very slight adjustment would be all that is necessary to solve the clipping problem. A few degrees in the correct direction is all that is needed. Well being the 30 cals are all single shot rifles there is no indexing problem.

It seems like everybody with the 30 cal has a problem with either clipping or indexing problems….it would seem like these guns were rushed out and not checked before packed up.

It looks to be quite a bit off. If you look from the back of the moderator you can see if its maybe turned a bit to the … left.

I received my 30 long on thurs, and have only have time to put 50-70 pellets or so down the tube indoors ~10yd range. made 1 ragged hole, then blew out the back of my duct seal trap. luckily i have a heavy steel plate behind it to protect for that.

anyway, this thread got me looking at my moderator. I may have some clipping as well, but as I was looking, it appears the moderator’s hole is drilled off center from the main support body of the baffles (hope that makes sense) does anyone else’s moderator look like that?

Are there any indexing marks to time the baffle to the barrel? guess i am off to sears tomorrow to get a 12mm wrench, and home despot to get some wood dowels to check alignment. Anything else I should be aware of before taking this on?

thanks in advance
lars
