EdGun Matador Standard in 177 **150 Shot String Update**

HOLY FUCKING SHIT. This thing is AWESOME.
It’s an EdGun Matador R3 Standard 177 cal.
18″ barrel, single screw trigger, new bolt model.
So easy to shoulder and shoot offhand. Steady, good ergonomics for offhand, no rail cant issues so far at 25-30 yards, lots of up clicks left, good weight, not too heavy and not too light.
The trigger is like butter without any adjusting after taking it out of the box.
Looks like it will work well for the seated position in field target too. Needs a little height at the fore rest and a thigh rest to make it rock solid. Trigger is in an acceptable location.
Ran a few pellets over the chrony after cleaning the barrel.
JSB Exact Heavies 10.34 grain are running a bit hot at 1033fps.
CPH Heavies Die ‘I’ 10.5 grains are running a little less hot at about 995fps.
Haven’t run a string yet but will do tomorrow.
Stock grain is relatively plain yet uniform, no real issues. There is spot or two on the left side top that are somewhat rough but relatively unnoticeable.
The anodizing is excellent and all the blacks match.
Cocking effort is less than my S400 and the bolt closes like a dream.
Pending accuracy testing and getting the pellets down to just under 900fps this rifle, dare I say work of art, not only meets my expectations so far it easily surpasses them.

I had no issues in the Lelya 177 with the JSB heavies. I was getting great groups at 35-40 yards. 😉
I have found about half my tins of JSB heavies are good (3/8″ groups at 45 yards) and some are not that goos (1 1/2″ groups at 45 yards).
I went through all my tins and marked the good ones. If my shots today are any indicator this thing is very accurate with the heavies at what I would consider a high velocity (1033fps).
No doubt I am very pleased to hear those warm words, but I would prefer to hear them after you test it in shooting 🙂 JSB heavy pellets are quite difficult to learn to “fly” right, unfortunately 🙁
Really? I have a tin for my FT pistol.
290-300 m/s is 950-985 fps.

I’m REALLY hoping she likes the tins of the heavy JSB’s that my USFT doesn’t like. 😉

I would recomend use JSB Exact 7.5 grains for better accuracty at about 290-300 m/sec.

Lars, I have found the JSB and CHP pellets (10 grain) will do well at a velocity of around 890 or so. In my two USFT’s I haven’t tried to go much higher. But now that you mention it I may give it a shot (with a USFT) just to see what happens.
I must admit when I did some test shots off hand this afternoon with the speeds it had out of the box it definitely hit where the crosshairs were located.
If I find it relatively easy to adjust the velocity (read if I feel I can do it at the range on the bench) i’ll test some higher velocities in the EdGun. Won’t know for sure until I give it a shot (shit, I mat just leave it where it is for my first range test).
I am happy though that I have to detune it rather than add velocity, I have found that pushing rifles to higher velocities can be detrimental.
I was a little concerned that Ed may have set it up for 12fpe since most of the 177 Matadors go to where there are energy restrictions. Nope, it’s pushing 24.5 ft/lbs. 😯 It’s not legal for field target actually, there is a 20 ft/lbs power limit, I will have to detune it a bit to be legit.
930fps is the max velocity for 10.34grain pellets (19.86 ft/lbs). 😉
When I first asked about a 177 Matador I was told they were not being made. For some reason Ed decided he’d send one to me last September when I stated that 177 were not available in a Cricket thread. I mentioned was bummed because I wanted to use one for field target competition (I shoot at the AAFTA regional, state and national championship matches).
As far as I know this is the only 177 EdGun in the USA that wasn’t customized and i’m pretty sure it is the only R3 177 here. I also originally wanted a long but Ed said he doesn’t make longs in 177 so a standard it was!
I prefer longer barrels (not sure why really) so I did some research and learned the AA EV2, Steyr and FWB field target rifles all have 18″ barrels. So I think i’ll be alright. 😉
I have already started designing a height adjustable hamster that will be mounted on a rail inlet in the fore end, a thigh rest clamp that will attach the the bottom of the butt (I already made a custom thigh rest for my USFT) and cheek rest (which I hope to make a few of and maybe sell them or give them away).
I will be following this thread closely. I was thinking of asking Ed/Tony for a 177 as well.
Do you have a pellet velocity you targeting for the 10gr? 950, 900?
