Edgun Standard .30 Cal – Squirrel #7
I drilled this guy straight through the shoulders to see what it would do. It dropped like a rock with a big hole through it. The 30 does a nice energy transfer. Sparrow count is up somewhere north of 40. I had a good day yesterday. One bad hit to the bird feeder bottom tray because a sparrow was sitting in it and I couldn’t resist. 😳

Here, there are too many squirrels to eat them all, unless you want to eat them 5 x a week! They are a plague, eating all nuts, fruits and berries they find. Complete crops are lost. They dig up newly planted vegetables and flowers. They plant hickory and acorns in gardens (hard to weed), chew holes in houses and are the cause of fatal car crashes as fools try to dodge them in roads.
There are many species, but our trouble-maker is the nefarious Eastern Grey.
Grey and Fox Squirrels are good eating, but most I shoot are given away. The mention of toxins/tannins, etc. in the meat is not worth considering, unless you eat the guts. 😯 These compounds enter the rodent’s digestive system and must be neutralized by the time any carbs, proteins and minerals are used to make the rodent’s muscle tissue-what one eats. The group of tannins in acorns is slowly soluble in water. Native Americans put chopped acorns in baskets and leached out the tannins in creeks by prolonged rinsing. Then, this was toasted over fire and ground into meal for porridge and other foodstuffs. I tried processing acorns, with several species, and the flavor did not suit me.
Here, Hickory nuts and walnuts are the main mast crop for squirrels, when they can’t get my peaches, blueberries, filberts, heartnuts, figs, sunflowers, corn, dog’s food, kiwi fruits, raspberries, crowder peas, grapes, tomatoes, chestnuts, pecans, green peas, lettuce, apples, pears, shell beans, pumpkins, etc. They do not appear to eat concrete or asphalt, without mechanical encouragement.
Kill squirrels. :6: If you don’t eat them, give them away or throw them in the woods, but kill them! 😈
Sorry, it’s my problem, Ill deal with it…maybe.
Hey< I resemble that remark! 👿 😆
We have lots of pecan trees around here. Makes for fantastic tasteing squirrel! 😀

Stranded on an Island with? Hmmm … Does a Hasselbeck taste like Squirrel??
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2. This POS iPhone sucks though …
You wouldn’t believe what I am doing. I just finished polishing the 30 cal trigger parts and re-checked the pull at 12 oz. It is very close to the feel of the Cricket now. That’s the good part. The family is watching the Exorcism of Emily Rose (they like Laura Linney who defends the priest). The good news is it’s based on a real story I guess. 😯 That is my New Year’s Eve.
Elizabeth Hasselbeck on Fox News Later On. That’s who I want to be stranded on an island with (she was on Survivor many years ago)
Yeah, the wife and I are going to have dinner and drinks and watch the east coast feed of one of the new year’s shows and get to bed before the west coast clock hits midnight. 😀
Guess I got spoiled with cottontails. The squirrels are more attached to their skins. IIRC, the 18 year old girls were like that, too. At least the first time.
Their diet varies by location. In my back yard (heavy Ozark woods) we have eight basic trees. Oak, black walnut (beautiful stocks 🙂 ), maple, cedar, hickory, dog wood, red bud, and persimmon. They won’t touch the persimmons. They do eat the walnuts but prefer the acorns. The squirrel and venison here is a bit stout IMO so they soak em a bit longer. 😯
Still too much work for the amount of meat you get. And they do eat lots of stuff besides acorns (including fruit off of our trees, which is part of the reason that I know what they taste like).
com’on Acorn, i can clean a squirrel in under two minutes. You can’t be that lazy! 😆 🙄 😉
And they make for a damed fine pot of dumplings! 😀
Squirrels are cute and tasty. Like 18 year old girls! 😀
Now if those said 18 year old girls start nawing their way into peoples attics, and eating the insulation off the wires. And burrning down houses, we’ll shoot those cute girls asses too! 👿
But I’ve been known, in my younger years, to eat either! 😈
One I like raw, and one I like cooked. Damed if I can remember which is which. 😳 Old age sucks! 😆
My neighbor had them get under the hood of their truck. 1600.00 US later, they could crank the truck and drive it again! Damed destructive! I just can’t remember for the life of me, which of the two did it. Hell, most teenagers are Squirrels anyway. 🙄

Tastes like chicken (dark meat) 😆

This will make you hungry for tree squirrels….
“Acorns contain a toxic substance called gallotannin, which, when metabolized by mammals causes gallic and tannic acids. Tannic acids cause ulceration of the mouth, esophagus, and gastrointestinal tract. In the Fall, this substance is concentrated in acorns and increases the risk of animal poisoning when acorns are ingested. There is no specific antidote for this toxin. Good nursing care is the only therapy for acorn toxicity. This care should include fluid and electrolyte replacement, antibiotics, and mineral oil.
Squirrels are one of the few mammals to have built a resistance to both gallic and tannic acids, making acorns a viable source of food. Care should be taken, as these acids should not be considered for human consumption. When ingesting squirrel, it is important to ensure the acid is neutralized with a basic chemical to reach a neutral pH level. Otherwise squirrels make an acceptable meal.”
Tree squirrels taste pretty good, but they are too much work for the amount of meat that they have.
I can’t eat them any longer. I see a rat with a furry tail. Actually, anything that eats a lot acorns has a wild taste (Acorns contain bitter tannins) and that is about all the tree squirrels eat.
You guys are weird. Eating Squrrels and all. Those crazy Icelanders eat rotten Shark though so there are weird things going on in Scandinavia too.

Knifemaker, if you’ve never heard of 18 year old girls doing this kind of damage, you’ve never lived on Detroit, Birmingham, or anywhere that has a crack/crystal addiction problem. If your out of town for more than a week, chances are your not going to have any wiring left in your house when you do get home. Not that we should shot them with air rifles tho. Maybe just a bug-a-salt or taser..
