( I still think that HOOT needs to order the longest air valve rods that Tony can supply. )
X2
And it sure would simplify things.
Guys, the later R3, .177, .22, .25 and the 30 cals use a far shorter air valve rod, on both ends, than the earlier R3s and the R2.5s use.
The OD of the steel end and the Derlin end is the same between all of the Matadors.
My 30 cal R3 long has a larger OD on the sealing surface end of the Derlin rod, I canât remember how much larger it is right now but, the larger OD wouldnât make a difference in sealing. The OD difference was around 1-2 mm, IIRC.
The larger OD on the sealing surface of the 30 cal is way outside of the air valve housing sealing âlipâ and the larger OD is just unused. I hope that this makes sense.
The air valve rods that I have in stock are for my R2.5s and my early R3s. They are way too long on both ends to work on my latest R3s and the 30 cal R3.
I am 100% certain that I can trim down both ends of any of my air valve rods and use them in my later version 25 cal R3 standard and my later version 25 cal R3 long as well as my 30 cal R3 long.
I have sent a couple of my way longer air valve rods out to guys that have the latest R3s. They had to cut each end to fit and didnât have any problems using the modified air valve rods in their guns.
For some reason, Ed has never come up with a standard air valve rod length for each model and caliber of Matador. I think that it might have something to do with Ed wanting to build his gun so that a guy could easily work on it. If I am correct, an overly long air valve rod can easily be fitted to any Matador makes sense to me.
I still think that HOOT needs to order the longest air valve rods that Tony can supply.
Overly long ones can easily be cut down by the latest R3 owners, a too short rod canât be used by the R2.5 and early R3 owners.
.30caliber standard……….delrin =28.4mm, steel rod = 44.75mm

Ok ill find it thx Brant.
RIDETOEAT already posted it.
What’s the valve stem measurement for the Ed .30cal standard, anyone? Thx!
Can you make a measure of the Metal rod and the plastic portion too?
I want to compare measurement of different models.
John
Hi John,
Sorry I’m not at home now , and I wait one degaser tool from ernest.
I can’t do this quickly.
I have do this before because I’ve got a leak O’ring on the regulator.
And the air have leak by the small purge under the reservoir.
Sorry.

Hi Makael,
Can you make a measure of the Metal rod and the plastic portion too?
I want to compare measurement of different models.

The valve rod in my .22 R3 (old style regulator/valve housing) was broken in June/July last year (see picture 1). I have a spare one for .25 ordered from Tony after one month receiving new .25 R3 (model with new regulator/valve housing), but it does not fit for .22 because the metal rod is too short (not protruding out enough for hammer) (see picture 2). The left one is supposedly for .25 R3, but the plastic part is too long compared with the stock one in my gun (I guess I can cut the plastic part to fit). Then Tony sent me a picture on the rods he had at that time (picture 3). There were different combinations of metal and plastic length. He asked me which one I want.:suprisedn: That was a really tough question that I couldnât answer at that time. I only knew that he didnât have the valve with dimension I want. So, I turned myself to Dr. Edgun and he has the valves with the âcorrectâ plastic length with a range of mental length 2.365â to 2.704.â Tedd is the savior for all Edguns. He cut the metal length I want and sent it to me. I sanded down and polished it a little at the metal end and was good to go. I think the length of metal rod protruding out is important. The too short or too long of the length might contribute to the early failure of the rod (http://www.talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=22808&start=160) (middle of the page).
Hoot, as Tedd said, you need to order the length of rod, especially the metal part, as long as possible because they can be cut to fit, but not the other way around.
The shorter plastic rod, 34 mm, is okay for the old valve-housing (http://www.talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=22808&start=160) (middle of the page). There is enough length for the valve spring and end cap (or washer in some model, and some donât even have the washer). I donât have R3M and .30 cal, canât comment on it.
Hopefully, this info does not add to the already confused rod size.

Endo

Picture 1: Broken valve .22 R3

Picture 2: Valve (lower one), supposedly for .25 R3, is too short in metal length for .22 R3

Picture 3: Tonyâs valves with different combination of metal and plastic lengths (per Tony).
Oldgoat,
I have the the R3 .25, R3 .30 and the R2.5 .22 and if I understand you correctly it is best to order all my valve stems for the R2.5 .22 because the outer deminsions on the steel and delrin are all basically the same given that the only difference is that R2.5 are longer and the length can be cut to size for the R3 25 and R3 30?
John,
if Hoot is on point for this one I’m all in for a group buy with the money up front for 15 valve stems. I think that I recall Oldgoat saying several months ago that Ed designed the valve stems for the R2.5 .22 cals and we shouldn’t have to much of a problem out of the .22 cal but the R3 .25 and .30 are prone to fatigue and that concern me. So I’m willing to go in for a large purchase upfront if you and Hoot can make it happen.
