Q:

EZ no drilling Harris Bi-pod mount

I was under the impression that the reason more people don’t use the harris style bipods is modification/drilling/tapping for mounting. In setting my first one up tonight I found an easy way I don’t recall anyone mentioning before. Anyone ever think about a standard sling swivel thread? 10-32, same as the barrel bushing screws.

If I’m just slow and didn’t notice, forgive me. Just an option that seems so easy it may have been overlooked by others too. Otherwise here’s a simple 1-2-3 method that requires no drilling or tapping.

1. relocate foregrip to use front triggerguard screw (slightly longer screw recommended). Note some guns already have the grip in this position.

2. Remove front/lower barrel bushing grub screw and replace with 10-32 threaded sling swivel stud (the white plastic washer will compress enough to allow proper alignment of the hole in the stud). May require shortening the stud threads depending on which threaded stud you buy.

3. Mount your bipod.

So easy even a Langman could do it 😛 😛 😛
(couldn’t resist 😀 😀 😀 😀 )

Happy (STEADY) shooting.

If best accuracy is on your list of goals, I’m not so sure it’s all that hot an idea. That grub screw was there for a reason, it’s the bedding for the barrel. Add to that some guys are stacking springs and stuff on that same front bushing and I can’t see how it would help the accuracy.

Perhaps a better plan is to leave the screw long enough so it still bears on the barrel?

Or how about the AF front sling swivel? Mine clamps to the rail and has the same sling stud but doesn’t interfere with the bedding.

BTW, the stud in question is cheap, ten bucks a dozen at Midway:

Brownell’s sells ’em too, without the nuts. Notice the threads don’t go all the way to the head, they nearly do on the 1/4 version I use for a rear sling stud (it threads into an unused hole on the Wok Butt). I put a brass flat washer under it, rather than the traditional white plastic ring:

Just a couple of random thoughts. I hope someone does a full out test and reports back?

Sweet. Somebody test this and post the results here, so I can go out and get one.

Nice find! Now I have more stuff to order for the new gun 🙂

Cool, cheers guys 😀

The length of the grub screws also differ from the 12″ barrel and the others. The 12″ is smaller in diameter.

Nice one Shrp, whats the best lengh stud to try to get??

Ideal length would be one of the same thread length as the front barrel bushing grub screw removed from your gun. I’ve seen different length screws in different stock guns depending on the barrel bushing config, so length needs to be determined by the individual owner.

Sling Studs cost about $3.00 at a gun shop. That’s where I buy mine.

His probably came with a wood screw stud and sling swivels and some other assorted hardware for different mounting options as opposed to just a single 10-32 Stud….

it’s a good idea 🙂

thanks

AWESOME!

Where did you order the sling stud? can you get me a link?

Sling stud and Bipod are both from Wally World

Harris Clone Bipod, 34.95
Uncle mikes sling swivel mount, 8.95

Don’t remember part numbers, but probably getting another this week for other gun, will post then.

Very steady.

AWESOME!

But as they say,

“anybody could do it like that!”

😛

Good idea. 😀

If the does not bugger the accuracy you just made a great innovation.

I have said it before and will say it again. The simple stuff often takes longer and is harder to come up with.

Good one Don!

sling stud is shortened to bottom against the washer, not the barrel so should have no effect. Will shoot and post results this week; full time job permitting.
