Q:

F"#¤%"#&" thing mill broke

the gear that is driven by the main motor metal gear, a plstic piece of shit, shattered when the endmill started to chatter, and i had forgotten to lok the Z axis…and it wandered down and grapped the tool i was milling…bam sounded like a short circuit…but was the plastic gear that gave up life grrrrrrr

so no fun for a couple of days….was milling a roundball end mill bit that i made my self….

got the Lathe Ball attachment, was tired of not being able to find a roundball endmill that i could afford…..so this 40$ thnigy enables round balls to be cut, and with a little milling a roundnose endmill is created…granted its not the best, but it will do the job.

the big endmill, still needs to get a little angle from the cutting endge towards the back to reduce friction, the small one has this done roughly…i dont need it to look nice, funktionality is what i want

thanks Adam, thats good to know.

I’ll probably hit the connector area with some silicon as well.

Can’t hurt 😀

I stick my finger in there an flip it. It would have been better to mount it on the back. I just followed the instructions that came with it because I did not want to screw it up…LOL

Here in SoCal we can get a lot of moisture in the air. The scales will give all kinds of crazy readings. I did not know what was causing it and finally after months of dicking around with it I call the MFG. He told me what it was and how to fix it. If the scales go crazy you take out the battery and hit it with a hair dryer for about 2 minutes and try it again. Usually works. Also he told me to run a bead of silicon where there cable connects to help keep moisture and crap out of there. His advice has paid off and it is good to know exactly what is occurring when your scale reads 1325.021 and you move it .25″….LOL

nope, so far no problems with the scales, but a humid day here would only be about 50% humidity 😀

You have any problems using your X-slide lock?

I mounted my scale on the back because the front mount would have made it hard to use the x-slide lock

(based on the fignoggle plans)

Dog wood….that is a big vise for sure. And the DRO is so nice. Have you ever had trouble with your scales going whacky due to moisture?

I have to bust out the hair dryer on occasion….LOL

saw its possible to get the individual axis dro for very cheap on ebay….

oh I took it off the base, its still takes up a whole lot of my Z

Oh, and DRO is the only way to go (unless you CNC 🙂 ) 😀

I’ve been eyeing that gas setup as well, really need the extra travel as I bought a 4″ Kurt-style vice and its rather tall.

I took my Kurt vise knock off and took it off of it base. That gave me more room for sure.

well got some parts yesterday

a 6″ rotating table….this thing is HEAVY, got it on ebay for 170 including shipping….which i thought was a good price vs the 3″ models.

im happy that i went with the 6″ model and not the 3″….so much more room to mount stuff

a gasram kit from LMS arrived too, fitted it tonight….and while the instructions are pretty clear the paper with the drill holes on has not been scaled right, seems like it was formatted for A4 but printed on letter and then PDF has adjusted the size to fit, was the same problem with the mount for the roundball cutter i got from them….nice drawing useless if you try and tape it to a piece of metal and use its measurements.

4 holes need to be drilled, 3 of them tapped…i skipped the fourth hole as it is the stopmount….dont care about that gasram will stop the head about quater inch from the top anyway

took me about an hour to mount everything and getting rid of the torsion spring, the head now moves up and down much more easily, plus it went from 7″ of travel to 9″ 22% more movement, nice for taller stuff like the bullpup stock im working on, is it worth the 40 bucks…yeah i think so

new gears arrived as well…so now the lathe is up and running….but i cant wait to get the belt drive…..gave the gears a nice big goop of lithium grease….it helped a bit

Why not make your own? isnt that the idea of buying a mill and lathe… to make things for the mill and lathe….lol

LOL

I’m kind of making my own, grabbed some plans off the net and having a friend mill some of the parts on his work CNC setup 😀

Best part is he’s using scraps from work so the metal is also free 8)

i caved in….have sold alot of toys lately was going to spend some of it on a new rifle….but instead

1 belt drive kit 120$
6″ rotary table 170$
gasram + z axis extender + spare parts for lathe 60 bucks…

now its just the wait for the stuff to show up

It’s the G3103 from Grizzly. I’ve had it for about two years now, and it never fails to do a great job. Grizzly.com 1-800-523-4777 She only weighs 915 lbs. with the stand. Much easier to move than a Bridge Port!

Kinfemaker, which model is that, I like it, sort of mid sized…
