Q:

F"#¤%"#&" thing mill broke

the gear that is driven by the main motor metal gear, a plstic piece of shit, shattered when the endmill started to chatter, and i had forgotten to lok the Z axis…and it wandered down and grapped the tool i was milling…bam sounded like a short circuit…but was the plastic gear that gave up life grrrrrrr

so no fun for a couple of days….was milling a roundball end mill bit that i made my self….

got the Lathe Ball attachment, was tired of not being able to find a roundball endmill that i could afford…..so this 40$ thnigy enables round balls to be cut, and with a little milling a roundnose endmill is created…granted its not the best, but it will do the job.

the big endmill, still needs to get a little angle from the cutting endge towards the back to reduce friction, the small one has this done roughly…i dont need it to look nice, funktionality is what i want

the belt slippage was actually what i was thinking would be a good thing until it gets torqued too much by abuse of the lathe…and then should slip and save the day

gonna get one from Ron Steele

They make a big deal in the advertizements of how great the gear drives are. No belt vibration. No slippage, ect. When things go wrong slippage is what you want! It can save you a lot of greef adn broken parts, tooling, and down time. Here is the model I am using in the shop. Mike http://s147.photobucket.com/albums/r294/mlovett_photo/th_G3102mill.jpg

That sucks Cygnus! hope you get it fixed soon…check EBAY for end mills “lots” I got a shitload of cutters for cheap and they will defintely do what I need them to. Only ones I had to buy new were the Dovetail cutters.

Jim.

Broken gear, bummer. 🙁

That fan on the motor looks cool, no pun intended.

Is it me or is anyone else having problems with the forum?

Here is another source. This one looks a little better. It is anodized and has a locking mech for the spindle

There are a couple other places to get them look here

and I know there is another guy making a nice conversion. Let me see if I can find it

i was actually ready to get the belt drive as the noise from the gear is horrible

however LMS is out of the kit

whats this Hoss mans belt drive where can i find info…i might just make one my self

Yep youve killed it 😀 ….. .Have to agree with Adam on this ! just look at his mill to see the way to go. My mid gear managed to strip its self away from its keyway and spun on the sharft. Managed to fix it but i finaly gave in and started on the Hoss mans belt drive, just got the big pully to make , its free which is cheaper than ordering from LMS for me in the UK 😀 . The noise from the gears is doing my head in as well 😕 damit

There are two things that will improve your mill exponentially.

One is a belt drive for about $119. Worth every penny and say good buy to gears for ever

And the other is something I just got. A power feed…OMG it is so much nicer now taking long cuts. It is about $140.

Buy the belt drive and do away with gear noise and breakage!

These 2 upgrades will transform you mill drastically
